Was it a fleeting moment the morning crossed, or an age? O day of the destitute, you were forged so long!
What harm if your dawn had shimmered slowly, so these weary eyes might find a little sleep?
You hastened the dreams of the dark, folding them away, while the soul was still sipping their honeyed lips.
How blissful they were, their magic coloring the images of desire, fluttering with tender care,
Stirring within them a sweet appetite for life, with love reckless and youth granting favors.
He tamed the stubborn lips to passion, until they laughed, whispering languid words.
He leaned over the misery of the destitute; they found no stumble without finding in him a refuge.
He draped them in radiance and youth, in love and the first sweet delights.
Yes, though they fade when the morning arrives, for what joys are not destined to fade?
Bending over the wounded heart, until it sways, quenched and dewy from her mercies.
Hovering like a cloud when the midday heat burns fierce, casting dew and profound shade in the sweltering glare.
Transforming the thirsty deserts into intoxicated meadows, into a laughing, inhabited domain.
As though, in the hopes she adorns, she is a healer whose hand strives to bring beauty.
He who created truth as bitter gall, created desires as sweet wine for the thirsty seekers.
They wrestle, neither finding the victory to extend its sovereign rule and endure.
Desires summon the throngs of hearts, while her sister summons insight and minds to the fray.
The universe is divided between these two rival wives; witness one tribe making the other its lawful prey.
Forgive the hearts for their transgression, for they have long been shackled, their wildness thoroughly tamed.
As for the dark, whose enemy is the dawn, you have seen it fall prostrate and slain.
Say to the truth: though you are cruel, time may yet unbind your shackled prisoner.
Though you possess the world and its secret treasures, you can never possess its dreams and its hopes.
The horizon of desires is a kinder, wider realm, with softer shadows and a more beautiful path.
Guard your treasures from the destitute, that no eye may ever find a way to that wealth.
And reserve them for the strong: pure wine, riches, and a drowsy, kohl-rimmed eye.
Should the wretched complain, use your whip, and hear the divine melody in their sighs and wails.
Turn away from those sleeping on empty stomachs; God created hope to turn the tides of fate.
Your generosity never truly guaranteed happiness, nor did your miserliness assure misery.
This life has bowed to your might in dread, so listen now to its clamor and roaring,
And the tempestuous roars rising from its gloom, standing as proof of your fierce, unyielding rule.
Your hands have seized its skies and its seas, grasping the entire cosmos in its breadth and length.
Does science rule alone in tyranny, devoid of a heart and affections within its domain?
If science ever rules the hearts, name it savagery, and call civilization a den of beasts.
If science ever rules the hearts, name them heavy stones, groaning beneath the burden they bear.
There is no pulse in their beating, but rather the harsh, cold clanking of iron.
As for hands, the best among them possesses a madness that smashed the lute to wield the chisel.
Science enslaved them; it is enough for science that all things are weighed and measured.
It has obliterated the holy sanctuary of imagination; do you not see that sacred realm destroyed?
There I stood, crying out to one who is absent; the companions returned, yet he could not bear the return.
And I wept, repaying his due; for many a tear has lightened sorrow or quenched a burning thirst.
I remember him when poetry, within its lush boughs, bathed our hearts in songs and gentle cooing.
Moist with perfumes, the dews of desire flutter, cradling secrets from dawn until dusk.
Revealing the world to you exactly as you desire, flattering your beguiled senses,
Bringing back the folded ages, and Adam, weeping as he leans over Abel.
Offered an immortality stripped of passion and desire, he refused, choosing exile and departure instead.
A romantic parting from his beloved, carrying the secret that he abandoned all pious chants and prayers.
Colors shift, flooding his soul with a beauty that is neither scant nor wearisome,
For the changing of colors is the blessing of an immortal who never knew alteration in his paradise.
Beneath the palm shadows, you see Buthayna leaning, her bosom embracing Jamil.
So delight in the vision of two lovers meeting at dawn, as the stars descend into setting.
Forgive Jamil when his madness took hold, striking fiercely, forsaking all gentle courtship and greetings.
Intoxicated, he pulls her tightly to his chest, seeing no sin, setting her bare flesh ablaze with kisses.
Sipping from her sweet lips as if drinking pure wine, leaving them trembling like a dew-kissed chamomile.
The fair maidens descended to the stream, the most beautiful among them unafraid of the wandering poet.
Until he hid their garments, demanding of her a deed her modesty deemed too grave.
She turned, pleading for chastity, stretching a neck as smooth and radiant as the dawn.
Yet he refused, and she rushed toward him bare, blushing—for beauty is loveliest when shy.
And you gaze upon the Madman in his tattered rags, a broken limb devoured by the fangs of disease.
The bliss of eyes forsook him, subjecting that abandoned soul to the whims of genius.
He fell, struck down upon the sands, shrouded, and washed by the tears of the dewy morn.
And the youth of Quraish, straining his eyes to the point of death to catch a glimpse of Thurayya, maddened by love.
She played with him to witness the agony he suffers, and the relentless passion that has seized him.
And Sukayna, hosting poetry in her salon, where beauty awakens its sorrow into song.
Drunk on coquetry, she gulps the wine of passion, yet modesty forbids her from swaying.
Filling the eyes with pure charm, yet filling the hearts with a profound and noble majesty.
Chastity stood guard over those dark lips, fiercely protective and stingy with its desires,
Emitting a fragrance that perhaps borrowed its holy scent from Gabriel himself.
And Abu Nuwas, amidst his courts of revelry, dividing the nights between drunkenness and stupor.
Sweet in his jest, he sinned and beautifully justified his transgressions to his fellow sinners.
He deemed life nothing but pure wine and a slender youth, viewing all else as mere surplus.
He cared not for the proud beauty of modest retreats, preferring it humbled among the singing girls.
From every coy maiden—should you flirt with her, you would soon find the knot of her belt undone.
She refuses, and boredom drives him away; yet even if she yielded to his desire, he would still grow bored.
And you see Ibn Burd in his wild impulses: an isolated lion shunned by the world.
He exposed scandals once kept hidden, drawing his polished eloquence like a sword against the kings.
They accused him of heresy, then sought an acceptable witness from among his envious foes.
Until, when witnesses were scarce, they schemed, finding in his very poetry their righteous proof.
The whims of politics branded him a heretic; by God, it was not for disbelief that he was slain.
Side by side, in every meadow by the stream, you see a lover and his beloved.
Drinking companions over pure wine, reciting the finest love poems and chanting the divine Revelation.
Blessings upon the bliss of imagination; may my eyes never see its loving domains turn barren.
Civilization sinned with its false adornments, ruthlessly demanding the payment of its delayed debts.
Deformed, she dreams of beauty, yet sees nothing but sorrow, bereavement, and the making of widows.
Her logic deems mere noise to be harmony, and reduces love to a science of structured chapters.
So if you seek love, look for its rules in a book, and beware of any deeper interpretation.
Learn of burning passions from its pages, and how to train your tears to flow on command.
Master the art of blaming the stars, feigning pain while deliberately prolonging your sighs.
For it is shrewdness in your book to imagine among the stars a critic of your passion.
O sanctuary of imagination, may civilization be a ransom for your visions, for it portrayed you only to distort.
How far is your beauty from their deceptive allure, which cheats the eyes and perfects the art of illusion!
I glimpse a message hidden in the unseen, and beyond the veil, I see a messenger from you.
And a book of truth that cares nothing for whims, even if it contradicts reason and ancient texts.
With the tenderness of the Gospel of Jesus, even if in all else it contradicts the Gospel.
And the eloquence of Ahmad: strength and sweetness, bringing wisdom and a beautiful vision of life.
It has obliterated a clamorous civilization, whose deafening noise leaves even the carefree overwhelmed.
A tyrant with no mercy in its decrees, acting in haste, though Time was never made to rush.
One hand prepares worldly pleasures for you, while the other breeds misery and inflicts torment.
Building and destroying just like life, spinning its threads only to unravel what it has spun.
No compassion beats within its chests, nor any passion; your eyes deceived you, for you saw only ruins.
And science—woe unto science on its Day of Reckoning, if it is held to answer for these reckless whims.
This is the book of the unseen, holding a mercy wide enough to embrace all creation, the wealthy and the destitute alike.
It washed existence clean of grudges and base desires, that the Spirit of God might descend and dwell within.
It harmonizes all lineages, its compassion flooding through their noble branches and deep roots.
Its simplicity made all nations equal; you see no lowly outcast, nor boast of noble blood.
It leaned over the sinful soul, realizing that the sin within souls is but an alien intruder.
Born as a mere thought in the imagination of human laws, it grew in the arms of civilization into a monstrous ghoul.
Names were invented for it, though it is but a metaphor, and its colors were merely imagined.
Civilization cast it upon man amidst his bliss, hunting him down, leaving him shackled and chained.
Not satisfied with the tortures of this life, she conscripted the unknown to punish him after death.
As though those very laws demand from human souls a toll of bitter grudges and blood revenge.
