  2. لك في السرائر بدعة مرموقة

    أنس المقيم و جفوة النزّاح

    You have a sublime innovation in your innermost thoughts

    The comfort of the settled and the aloofness of the wanderer

  3. مجد كآفاق السماء اذا انتهت

    منه نواح بادهت بنواحي

    Glory like the horizons of the sky when they end

    With laments that faded in the lands

  4. الدّهر ملك العبقريّة وحدها

    لا ملك جبّار و لا سفّاح

    Time rules genius alone

    Not the mighty king or the bloodthirsty killer

  5. و الكون في أسراره و كنوزه

    للفكر لا لوغى و لا لسلاح

    And the universe in its secrets and treasures

    Is for thought not for chaos and weapons

  6. ذرت السّنون الفاتحين كأنّهم

    رمل تناوله مهبّ رياح

    The years made the conquerors seem

    Like sand taken away by the blowing winds

  7. لا تصلح الدّنيا و يصلح امرها

    إلاّ بفكر كالشعاع صراح

    The world cannot be fixed and its affairs set right

    Except by thought like a frank ray

  8. مرح على كيد الحياة و أهلها

    يلقى شدائدها بأزهر ضاح

    Joking about the cunning of life and its people

    Meeting its hardships with a blossoming smile

  9. خير العقائد في هواي عقيدة

    شمّاء ذات توثّب و جماح

    The best doctrine in my passion is the doctrine

    Of a proud, leaping, winged female goat

  10. تبني الحياة على هدى إيمانها

    و العقل مثبت غيرها و الماحي

    It builds life on the guidance of its faith

    While the mind proves the rest and wipes it out

  11. سكرى العقيدة أين من آفاقه

    سكر العيون و أين سكر الراح

    The intoxication of doctrine - where is it compared to the horizons

    Of the intoxication of eyes, and where is the intoxication of the one at rest?

  12. ملك الحياة فخلف كلّ ثنيّة

    لليأس يكمن منه ألف طماح

    The king of life hides behind every curve

    A thousand ambitions lying in wait for despair

  13. شرف المعارك بالجراح و بالردى

    فبدار قسطك من أذى و جراح

    The honor of battles is in wounds and destruction

    So your abode is safe from harm and wounds

  14. و احمل بكفّيك الحياة تحدّيا

    منها لأول معتد بالسّاح

    And carry life with your palms challenging it

    As the first transgressor with weapons

  15. ألعمر من غيب القضاء خبيئة

    فابسط مصون كنوزه بالرّاح

    Life is an unseen fate's treasure

    So unfold its treasures comfortably

  16. لا تشك من قصر الحياة فربّما

    أغنت إشارتها عن الإفصاح

    Do not complain of life being short, it may

    Suffice with a gesture without need for explanation

  17. سفر الحياة إذا اكتفيت بمتنه

    أغناك موجزه عن الشرّاح

    If the journey of life satisfies you with its text

    Its summary will suffice you without need for exegesis

  18. و اختر لنفسك ميتة مرموقة

    بين النّجوم على الأديم الصاحي

    And choose for yourself a sublime death

    Among the stars in the vigilant horizon

  19. للموت في اللجج العميقة رهبة

    شمخت بسؤددها على الضحضاح

    Death in the deep seas is fearful

    My pride defied it in tumult

  20. حوّطت بالله العقيدة من أذى

    خرقاء فاجرة اليمين وقاح

    I surrounded doctrine with God from harm

    An immoral shameless oath-breaker

  21. سكرت على كرم النديّ و عربدت

    فاليوم لا خمري و لا أقداحي

    You got drunk on the benevolence of the companion and became disorderly

    So today I have no wine or cups

  22. لهو العيون و لا أقول قذاتها

    و كل تكلّف زهوة المجتاح

    Flirting with eyes - and I won't say winking

    And all pretentious coquetry of the flirt

  23. مترنّح العطفين من خيلائه

    ماذا تركت لغارة و كفاح

    Swaying with tenderness from his arrogance

    What did you leave for raiding and fighting?

  24. الله يعلم ما أردت شماتة

    بمصرّعين من العياء طلاح

    God knows I did not want to gloat

    At the death of the weak, ashamed ones

  25. تأبى الشماتة في الضّعيف شمائلي

    و تعفّ عن شلو الجريح صفاحي

    Gloating over the weak is against my nature

    And pardoning the stumbling of the wounded is my disposition

  26. و أنا الذي وسع الهموم حنانه

    و بكى لكلّ معذّب ملتاح

    And I who widened the bosom of my care

    And cried for every tortured weary one

  27. أشقى لمن حمل الشقاء كأنّما

    أتراح كلّ أخي هوى أتراحي

    Most wretched for those who carried misery as though

    I relieved the agony of each brother I relieved

  28. غسل الأسى قلبي و حسبك بالأسى

    من غاسل حقد القلوب و ماحي

    Sorrow washed my heart, and sorrow is enough

    As a washer of hearts' hatred and wiper

  29. و وددت حين هوى جناح حمامة

    لو حلّقت من خافقي بجناح

    And I wished when the wing of a dove swooped down

    If it flew from my fluttering wing

  30. حبّ قد انتظم الوجود بأسره

    أسد الشرى و حمامة الأدواح

    Love that threaded existence altogether

    The lion of evil and the dove of sorrows

  31. أعمى تلفّتت العصور فما رأت

    عند الشموس كنوزه اللّماح

    Blind ages glanced but did not see

    Its hidden treasures near the suns

  32. نفذت بصيرته لأسرار الدّجى

    فتبرّجت منها بألف صباح

    His insight penetrated the secrets of darkness

    So dawn broke from it in a thousand mornings

  33. من راح يحمل في جوانحه الضّحى

    هانت عليه أشعّة المصباح

    Who would carry dawn in his wings

    The rays of lamps would be slight for him

  34. أمصوّر الدنيا جحيما فائرا

    يرمي العصور بجمره اللّفّاح

    I imagine the world a blazing hell

    Throwing its embers at the ages

  35. هوّن عليك ففي النّفوس بقيّة

    من رحمة و مروءة و سماح

    Be gentle on yourself, for in souls remains

    A remnant of mercy, chivalry, and tolerance

  36. خلف الخجير و عنفه و لهيبه

    ما شئت من ظلّ و طيب نفاح

    Behind the heatedness, violence, and flames

    Whatever shade and good fragrance you wish

  37. ضجّت ملائكة السّماء بساخر

    مرّ الدعابة شاتم مدّاح

    The angels of heaven cried out mocking

    The joker who insulted the praiser

  38. السخر فيه إذا أخذت بكفره

    كالسخر حين تراه في النصّاح

    Mockery in it when you take its disbelief

    Is like mockery when you see it in sincere advice

  39. نكب العقائد و الطّباع فيا لها

    فتكات حتف كالقضاء متاح

    It ruined beliefs and morals, oh for them

    Are murderous strikes like accessible fate

  40. و عدا على حرم السماء فيا له

    فنحا أطلّ به على الفتّاح

    And it transgressed on heaven's sanctuary, oh for it

    So it appeared through it the Opener

  41. عرّى السرائر و النّفوس ممزّقا

    عنهنّ كلّ غلالة و وشاح

    It exposed the secrets and souls, tearing away

    From them any covering or veil

  42. و جلا المصون من الضمائر فانتهى

    همس النّفوس لضجّة و صياح

    And revealed the guarded from consciences, so it ended

    The whispers of souls for loud cries

  43. إن يقس في نقد الطباع فلم تكن

    ترجى لرحمتها يد الجرّاح

    If it is harsh in criticizing morals, then mercy

    Was not hoped for them from the hand of the surgeon

  44. إيه رهين المحبسين ألم يئن

    إطلاق مأسور وفكّ سراح

    Oh prisoner of the two prisons, does he not moan

    For the release of the captive and the unshackling of the prisoner?

  45. ظفرت برحمتك الحياة وصنتها

    عن كلّ ناعسة الجفون رداح

    Your mercy protected life and guarded it

    From every slumbering eyelid refusing to stay up

  46. أتضيق بالأنثى و حبّك لم يضق

    بالوحش بين سباسب و بطاح

    Do you feel narrow with the female when your love

    Did not feel narrow with the beast among the bushes and sands?

  47. يا ظالم التّفاح في وجناتها

    لو ذقت بعض شمائل التفّاح

    Oh unjust critic in her gardens

    If you tasted some of the traits of apples

  48. عطر أحبّ من المنى و غلالة

    بدع فمن وهج و من أفراح

    A scent more beloved than wishes and a covering

    Of wonders - some of shine and some of joys

  49. هي صورة لله عزّ و جلّ جلاله

    عزّت نظائرها على الألواح

    She is an image of God, may He be glorified in His majesty

    Her equals were too magnificent for tablets

  50. منحت بقدرته النعيم و لوّنت

    أنواره جلّت يد المنّاح

    She was granted bliss by His power and colored

    His lights, excelling the painter's hand

  51. ليت الهموم العبقريّة هدهدت

    بحنان طيّبة اللّمى ممراح

    I wish the genius worries would murmur

    With the tenderness of the gentle doe hopping

  52. لو أنّها نزلت على نعمى الهوى

    نزلت مدلّلة بأكرم ساح

    If they descended upon the bliss of passion

    They would descend pampered in the most generous field

  53. حرم على عسر الزمان و يسره

    و حمى أمين السرب غير مباح

    Forbidden from the ease and hardship of time

    And protected the flock from anything unlawful

  54. ما أحوج العقل الحكيم و همّه

    و سع الحياة لصبوة و مراح

    How the wise mind and its worries need

    A life wide enough for impetuousness and meadows

  55. و لمن تدلّله و تسكر روحه

    عند الهجير بظلّها النفّاح

    And for the one whose playfulness and intoxicated soul

    In its shade with the blowing wind

  56. أنثى إذا ضاقت سريرة نفسه

    طلعت بآفاق عليه فساح

    A female when the confines of her soul narrowed

    Rose with horizons so it relaxed for him

  57. تسقى الهموم إذا وردن حنانها

    بمعطّر كالسلسبيل قراح

    Troubles if they come to her tenderness

    Are watered with a perfume like pouring drink

  58. وتردّهنّ عرائسا مجلوّة

    كندى الصباح و كنّ غير صباح

    And she returns them brides adorned

    Like the morning star and like dawn but not the dawn

  59. للعبقريّة قسوة لولا الهوى

    عصفت بكلّ عقيدة و صلاح

    For genius there is harshness, if not for love

    It would have ravaged every belief and righteousness

  60. رعناء إن ترك الجمال عنانها

    طاحت بفارس متنها الجحجاح

    A fool - if beauty released its reins

    It would overthrow a horseman its saddle overturned

  61. ما للشراع على العواصف حلية

    إن لم تصرّفه يد الملاّح

    What is the elegance of the sail to storms

    If the sailor's hand does not steer it?

  62. إيه حكيم الدّهر أيّ مليحة

    ضنّت عليك بعطرها الفوّاح

    Oh wise one of time, which beauty

    Was stingy to you with its fragrant scent?

  63. أسكنتها القلب الرّحيم فرابها

    ما فيه من شكوى و رجع نواح

    It settled her in the merciful heart, so she feared

    What was in it of complaint and lamenting's return

  64. جرحت إباءك و الحياء فأقفلا

    باب المنى و رميت بالمفتاح

    Your recalcitrance and shyness closed

    The door of bliss and you threw away the key

  65. لو أنصفت لسقتك خمرة ريقها

    سكر العقول و فتنة الأرواح

    If you were fair you would have quenched me with wine whose drivel

    Intoxicates minds and tempts souls

  66. و لأسعفتك على الهوى بمعطّر

    بالحسن لا بشقائق و أقاح

    And you would have provided for me in love with perfume

    With beauty not with anemones and coriander

  67. لا تخف حبّك بالضغينة و الأذى

    الحبّ جوهر حقدك الملحاح

    Do not conceal your love in malice and harm

    Love is the essence of your persistent hatred

  68. و أطل هجاءك ما تشاء فخلفه

    غرر منضّرة من الأمداح

    And unleash your censure as much as you wish, for behind it

    Are shining pearls of praises

  69. العبقريّة و الجمال تحدّرا

    من نبعة و تسلسلا من راح

    Genius and beauty flowed down

    From a source, and cascaded down from comfort

  70. أخوان ما طلع الضّحى لولاهما

    إلاّ على العبرات و الأتراح

    Brothers - if dawn did not rise except

    Over ruins and remains

  71. الظاّلمان المالكان و نعمة

    ما أسلفا من زلّة و جناح

    The two unjust possessors, and what

    Past mistake and misstep they committed!

  72. إنّ التي حرمتك نعمة حبّها

    و أبيك عار كواعب و ملاح

    She who deprived you of the bliss of her love

    And refused you the shame of flirts and cruelties

  73. لو كان في يديّ الزّمان و سرّه

    و أعنّة الإمساء و الإصباح

    If the time and its secret were in my hands

    And the assistance of evens and mornings

  74. في مشهد تكسو الوفود رحابه

    و يغصّ بالغادين و الروّاح

    In a scene where delegations fill its expanse

    And it is crowded with comers and goers

  75. لنزعت فتنتها و سحر جفونها

    و محوت نور جبينها الوضّاح

    I would take away her charm and spell of eyes

    And erase the light of her luminous forehead

  76. و نثرت جوهر ثغرها من عقده

    فصحاحه العطرات غير صحاح

    And scatter the essence of her mouth from its necklace

    So its pearls of perfume became no longer intact

  77. و رددت للسبعين ريّق عمرها

    و الحاليات من الصبا الممراح

    And return the drivel of her seventy years

    And the nonsense of youth's playfulness

  78. و جلوت مرآتي .... فندّت صرخة

    كلمى و غطّت خزيها بالرّاح

    And hide my mirror...but a scream covered

    My words and its shame with winds

  79. حتّى إذا أتمت ذلك كلّه

    أشرفت انظر نظرة المرتاح

    Until when I completed all that

    I looked - the look of one resting

  80. فثأرت من ظلم الجمال و ربّما

    شمتت جراح في الثرى و أضاح

    So I took revenge on the injustice of beauty, and perhaps

    I would gloat at wounds in the soil and blood

  81. و إذا رأيتك ضقت فيه تنكّرت

    للجدّ منه دعابتي و مزاحي

    And if I saw you, I would be annoyed and deny

    In seriousness my joking and fun with you

  82. الوحدة الكبرى تهلّل فجرها

    بظلال أبلج ذائد نفّاح

    The greatest solitude - its dawn sparkled

    With shadows whiter than a blowing wind

  83. هذي العروبة في حماك مدلّة

    ريع العدوّ بها و ضاق اللاّحي

    This is Arabism, humbled to protect you

    The enemy's tithe by it narrowed and the refuser despaired

  84. الأزرق الرجراج حنّ لرملة

    في الدّجلتين نديّة مسماح

    The shining deep blue bowed to a sand dune

    Gracious in the two rivers, a restful harbor

  85. و رأى الكنانة إن تماجد ما جدت

    بالعاص لا بمنى و لا بفتاح

    And it saw steadfastness - if it persevered - it did not persevere

    With a staff, not with bliss or keys

  86. سمعا حكيم الدّهر فهي قصيدة

    و أبيك بدع مغرّد صدّاح

    Listen, wise one of time, for it is a poem

    And you refused the innovations of a singing nightingale

  87. عصماء إن شهد النديّ خطيبها

    تركت فصاح القوم غير فصاح

    Chaste - if the companion testified for her lover

    She left the people's eloquence without eloquence

  88. بدهت شواردها العدى بكتيبة

    خضراء تلمع بالحديد رداح

    Its distant impulses faded for a battalion

    Green, flashing with clanging metal

  89. هل في ثراك على المعرّة موضع

    بين العيون لدمعي السحّاح

    Is there in your burial place in the battlefield a spot

    Between the eyes for my pouring tear?

  90. حنت النّفوس عليه تسكب حبّها

    فجلت براح البيد غير براح

    Souls sang for him, pouring out their love

    So he shone with the wind of distance, not wind

  91. ما للجياد الأعوجيّة حسّرا

    صرعى الهجير على المدى الفيّاح

    What loss for the twisted Arabian horses

    My death in the open space on the vast plain

  92. فاعذر إذا لم أوف مجدك حقّه

    لجج الخضمّ طغت على السبّاح

    Excuse me if I did not give your glory its right

    The billows of the struggle overwhelmed the swimmer
