The heart has ceased craving what it once desired and sought,
And now complains and laments no more.
It sobered after intoxication and revived after humiliation,
While the heart that aspires the heights continues tossing and turning.
How long will I indulge one who seeks my humiliation?
I exert myself to please her yet she grows angry.
The days of beauty, O Ubayla, are few,
They have an appointed term then they depart.
Do not think I regret the separation,
Nor is my heart tormented by the fires of passion.
And I have said that I am done with love and longing,
One like me does not speak untruth.
I have left you, so go wherever you wish and try
Someone other than me, for the wise one experiments.
Indeed he who finds himself by night at a place of rest
Weeping over the ruins and lamenting has fallen low.
While he who charges with his spear in the battle by dawn
Piercing the enemy ranks as the dust whirls has succeeded.
My friend, may God protect you, arise and sing to me
As I drink from cups of blood when I imbibe.
And do not serve me the cup of wine, for by it
The mind of the brave is led astray and perishes.
