My darling Zubaida chides me for daring

To venture out on crowded days.

She fears I'll lose my life

To spear or sword in battle's fray.

My words none of the noble will heed

Nor any but the base acclaim.

The old man dares death's stormy sea

And returns unharmed through the foamy main,

While death an infant comes for one in swaddling clothes

And meets his end before he's weaned.

Do not accept disgrace or humiliation,

Or be content with meager crumbs.

One day's life of honor under glory's shade

Not a thousand years under disgrace's reign.
