إِذا لَعِبَ الغَرامُ بِكُلِّ حُرٍّ

حَمِدتُ تَجَلُّدي وَشكَرتُ صَبري

When passion plays with every free man,

I praise my patience and thank my composure.

وَفَضَّلتُ البِعادَ عَلى التَداني

وَأَخفَيتُ الهَوى وَكَتَمتُ سِرّي

I prefer distance over intimacy,

I hide my love and conceal my secret.

وَلا أُبقي لِعُذّالي مَجالاً

وَلا أُشفي العَدُوَّ بِهَتكِ سِتري

I give no chance for my blamer,

Nor heal my enemy by exposing my faults.

عَرَكتُ نَوائِبَ الأَيّامِ حَتّى

عَرَفتُ خَيالَها مِن حَيثُ يَسري

I wrestled with the vicissitudes of days until

I knew their course from where it flows.

وَذَلَّ الدَهرُ لَمّا أَن رَآني

أُلاقِي كُلَّ نائِبَةٍ بِصَدري

Time yielded when it saw me

Meet every hardship with my chest.

وَما عابَ الزَمانُ عَلَيَّ لَوني

وَلا حَطَّ السَوادُ رَفيعُ قَدري

The days did not blame my color,

Nor did adversity bring down my high worth.

إِذا ذُكِرَ الفَخارُ بِأَرضِ قَومٍ

فَضَربُ السَيفِ في الهَيجاءِ فَخري

When the pride of a people is mentioned,

Brandishing the sword in battle is my pride.

سَمَوتُ إِلى العُلا وَعَلوتُ حَتّى

رَأَيتُ النَجمَ تَحتي وَهوَ يَجري

I rose to the highs and ascended until

I saw the stars beneath me flowing.

وَقوماً آخَرينَ سَعَوا وَعادوا

حَيارى ما رَأوا أَثَراً لِأَثري

And others who strove and returned,

Perplexed, seeing no trace of my path.
