My heart awoke from its drunkenness,

And sleep visited my eyelids by stealth.

Time made me fortunate, so my happiness

Broke through veils and formidable barriers.

I am the slave who meets calamities

The morning after panic, fearing no end.

I attack the horsemen on days of war,

And do not fear the lightly armed warriors.

I am thrilled by Indian swords until

I yearn for the arenas where they clash.

But I am one who loves the noble summit,

While others love the soft and gentle sands.

Goblets with spear-heads are my drink,

With which I am happiest when I imbibe.

The tips of slim spears are my transport,

As is the fragrance of basil when the track is congested.

May God reward the steed today for me,

As free horses are rewarded by release.

With his chest I split the wave of death,

And plunged in, heedless of being caught.

Oh Abla, if you could see my deeds,

And death's horses closing in fast around me!

    هُما في الحَربِ كانا لي رِفاقا

    Ask my sword and spear about my fighting;

In war they were my companions.

I watered them with blood, which if poured

On Mount Tihama, would not revive.

And many a lord have I felled and left

Twitching feet and legs in the blood.
