I blame an unrelenting fate, though advisors reproach me,

And I conceal my love's longing, while tears expose me.

My people aid the days against me with sword and spear,

Hunting me down with blades unsheathed from every side.

They have estranged me from my beloved, whom I love,

So I dwell now in the wilderness, far from all mankind.

Easier than extending my hands for a gift

Would be to bare my neck to the executioner's knife.

O Lord, let not my life end in shame,

Nor my death be amidst wailing women's cries.

Rather, let me die with the birds circling above,

And ravens drinking their fill from my bleeding sides.
