I restored to ʿAmr ibn Qays my necklace—
eighty black camels from the heights of Mount al-Haḍb.
Had my mother not borne me, it would have flown away,
the fabled Phoenix bearing it from my brother Kalb’s keeping.
I would not allow him to choose for himself
the clients’ offering: a young camel and a male calf.
Never has my eye beheld a horseman like Murra,
the morn al-Saffāḥ cried, “To the aid of al-Shajb’s sons!”
Yet by root and stock he was not one of Taym’s sons,
nor of ʿAbd Wudd, by pedigree or blood.
And Ibn Kulthūm broke away from al-ʿAbd after
he had disavowed before him Khālid and the sons of Kaʿb.
