إذا لم يكن بين القلوب صدود

فأهون شيء أن تصد خدود

If there were no estrangements between hearts,

The slightest thing would make cheeks turn away.

وعندي على جور الزمان وعدله

فؤاد بغير الغانيات عميد

And in the injustice and justice of time, I have

A heart made steadfast by more than songs.

ووجد عدمت الصبر لما وجدته

وهم على نقص الحياة يزيد

I found patience lacking when I found it,

And worries about the shortness of life increase.

خليلي لم يبل الزمان وإنما

بلينا وصرف النائبات جديد

My friend, time has not worn out, but rather

We were worn out, with fate renewed.

وما هذه الأيام إلا رواحل

تبيد بها الأعمار ثم تبيد

These days are but milestones

By which lives pass away and perish.

وأضغاث أحلام تمر فتستوي

على المرء منها يقظة وهجود

Fragments of dreams that pass by,

To people awake and asleep.

ولما رأيت الغدر في كل شيمة

وليس لموف بالعقود عقيد

And when I saw betrayal in every trait

And people had no fidelity to pacts,

عذرت المواضي كيف تنبو شفارها

وسامحت نصل الرمح كيف يحيد

I excused the hillsides, how their edges turned away,

And I forgave the bent spear, how it swerves.

وعمم فودي المشيب فلم يقل

وقاري ألا ليت الشباب يعود

The white hairs have spread across my head, but still

My dignity has not diminished - would that youth return!

وقد تتمناه نفوس غبية

وليس تمني المستحيل يفيد

It may be wished for by foolish souls,

But wishing for the impossible brings no benefit.

وكل امرء خانته صبغة رأسه

فإن وفاء الناس منه بعيد

The way of righteousness is clear,

Yet it disappears, even if time schemes.

تلوم الليالي في عهود نقضتها

وما لمواثيق الرجال عهود

Its servants have subjugated the elite of kings -

The free were humiliated and servants empowered.

مضى الصالح الملك الكفيل ودهره

ذميم وأما سعيد فحميد

If the King Salih was righteous among us

Then how many times did Thamud not bear!

تحلت به الأيام ثم سلبنه

فعطل نحر للزمان وجيد

After my father, the lofty one, may his soul be sanctified,

Who hopes for a promise or fears a threat?

تسود وجه الصبح منه رزية

وشابت نواصي الليل وهو وليد

And were it not for Abu Najm the Victorious after him

Generosity would have shrunk and existence faded.

وما كنت أدري قبلها أن حظنا

شقي وحظ النائبات سعيد

We found him when we lost his brother

So blessed is the present and the late lamented!

ولا أن وجه الرشد والرشد واضح

يغيب ولو أن الزمان يكيد

An Alawite state thanked him

As he defended its people and warded off attacks.

أتسطو بأعيان الملوك عبيدها

لقد ذل أحرار وعز عبيدها

He saved it decisively and determinedly

With means of his own and many soldiers.

لئن كان فينا الصالح الملك صالحاً

فكم من قدار لم تلده ثمود

He took charge while glory betrayed its sister.

His undertaking was complete while people sat still.

أبعد أبي الغارات قدس روحه

يؤمل وعد أو يخاف وعيد

Until power settled in its resting place

And the borders of the Mashrafiyeen stood firm.

ولولا أبو النجم المظفر بعده

تقلص جود واضمحل وجود

On Monday morning its fury subsided

He gathered its strength when tribulation was severe.

وجدناه لما أن فقدنا شقيقه

فبورك موجود وطاب فقيد

The souls of people flew from its thrashing,

And the mountains almost collapsed.

لقد شكرته دولة علوية

يدافع عن حوبائها ويذود

But Badr bin Ruzayq grabbed it when

It whinnied - he was its pillar.

تداركها بالحزم والعزم أروع

له عدة من نفسه وعديد

He extinguished the fire of evil in its kindling,

With no fuel for it but men.

وقام بها والمجد يخذل أختها

أتم قيام والأنام قعود

He managed people’s affairs with firmness and justice

So the frequented places prospered and enemies were humiliated.

إلى أن قر العز في مستقره

وقامت بحد المشرفي حدود

He spread over the white desert the veil of a cloud

With lightning whites and thunderous roars.

وفي ضحوة الإثنين سكن جأشها

وشد قواها والبلاء شديد

Had he willed destruction on Friday for the enemy

He would have made their foreheads and cheeks strike the ground.

وطارت نفوس الخلق من خفقاتها

وكادت جبال الخافقين تميد

But he spared them, to demonstrate that he

Has power over what he desires and wants.

فأمسكها بدر بن رزيك عندما

وهي طنب منها ومال عمود

Did the fore-riders of his horses not rush ahead?

No enviers stood in their way.

وأطفأ نار الشر عند التهابها

وليس لها غير الرجال وقود

Did he not pardon them after they had become

Two parties, some standing and some fallen?

وساس أمور الناس بالبأس والندى

فأخصب مرتاد وذل مريد

And all the battle stations of the Victorious One

Have the sword for judge and necks as witnesses.

ومد على البيداء ستر غمامة

لها البيض برق والصليل رعود

Daring, when facing calamities, he

Is patient with the heat of hellfire.

ولو شاء يوم الجمعة الفتك بالعدى

لرضت جباه منهم وخدود

The field of his chest welcomes terrors

When delegations of worries visit it.

ولكنه أبقى ليعلم أنه

قدير على ما يشتهي ويريد

No wonder if worries die in his chest

For the chests of the capable are tombs.

ألم تتسرع من أوائل خيله

فوارس لم يثبت لهن حسود

My friend, in the plain where prostrations

And bowings gathered for worship.

ألم يعف عنهم قادراً بعدما غدوا

فريقين منهم قائم وحصيد

Do you have, over there, that I sought the company

Of virtues imprisoned from visitors?

وكل مقامات المظفر في الوغى

لها السيف قاض والرقاب شهود

And I visited Abu Najm, the praiseworthy, with my poems

So my purpose succeeded through him and the ode.

أغر إذا لاقى الخطوب فإنه

صبور على حر الجلاد جليد

The wind of acceptance blew on it through his merit

So after blowing it has no stillness.

ترحب بالأهوال ساحة صدره

إذا طرقتها للهموم وفود

His criticism distinguished it from people’s rambling

And his knowledge taught it how to excel.

ولا غرو إن ماتت حقود بصدره

فإن صدور القادرين لحود

And every day, his prayers

Continue to my house, renewing the dew.

خليلي بالبطحاء حيث تجمعت

محامل منها ركع وسجود

Most wondrous is what I witnessed - how his palm

Was gracious to me, when iron bites iron!

أعندكما أني تيممت حضرة

مكارمها للوافدين قيود

And hardship, in which spearheads thrust

And swords struck, did not distract him from habitual generosity.

وزارت أبا النجم الهمام قصائدي

فأنجح قصد عنده وقصيد

He saw me with an eye - if it saw dried soil

It would bloom verdant, and bare wood would leaf.

وهبت لها ريح القبول بفضله

فليس لها بعد الهبوب ركود

My gratitude has a secret way to possess him

By which nobles know how to rule.

وميزها عن بهرج الناس نقده

وعلمها بالجود كيف تجيد

And he awakened the eyelids of my fortune, while I

Have continued to rouse it since it was sleeping.

وفي كل يوم لا تزال صلاته

إلى منزلي تبدي الندى وتعيد

So he ruined, with kindness, the face of my peers

And I have no intimate friends.

وأعجب ما شاهدت إحسان كفه

إلي وقد عض الحديد حديد

He spoke to himself about me, so he was gracious

With what I had not hoped for or presented.

ولم تلهه عن عادة الجود محنة

بها الرمح غار والحسام رشيد

Generosity is nothing but insight and wakefulness

While stinginess is nothing but confusion and stillness.

رآني بعين لو رأت يابس الثرى

لأينع مخضراً وأورق عود

In some matters he lavished favor on me

For kings bestow in proportion to souls.

تملك شكري من طريق خفية

بها تعرف السادات كيف تسود

Better than his favors, in my eyes, is the nobility

Of my friend which faultfinders envy.

وأيقظ لي أجفان حظي ولم أزل

أنبهها مذ كنت وهي رقود

So may the Merciful allow me to thank his patronage!

For above what he has given me, there is no increase.

فأفسد بالمعروف وجه معارفي

فمالي من أهل الوداد ودود

وخاطب عني نفسه فتفضلت

بما لم أكن أستامه وأورد

وما الجود إلا فطنة وتيقظ

وما البخل إلا حيرة وجمود

وفي بعض ما أولى غناي وإنما ال

ملوك على قدر النفوس تجود

وأحسن من نعماه عندي كرامة

صديقي عليها كاشح وحسود

فأوزعني الرحمن شكر اصطناعه

فما فوق ما أسدى إلي مزيد
