خذ يا زمان أماناً من يدي أملي

لا روعت سربك الأطماع من قبلي

Take my hopes as a pledge, O time

Neither have I allured your dreams before

ولا لبستك مطوياً على دخن

إلا نشرتك ملبوساً على دخل

Nor have I folded you as a scroll on smoke

Except I have worn you as a garment on income

ولا مددت إلى أيدي بنيك يدي

إذا فلا وألت كفي من الشلل

Nor have I extended my hands to your sons

If so, my palms have not been paralyzed by paralysis

متى اشتفى سقم آمالي بعلتهم

فلا شفى الله آمالي من العلل

Whenever the illness of my hopes healed by their rising

Then may God not heal my hopes from illnesses

وإن غشيت إلى سقيا ثمارهم

فلا سقى الله لي قلباً سوى الغلل

And if I was shaded to the watering of their fruits

Then may God not water a heart for me other than bitterness

صانوا بأعراضهم أعراضهم فغدا

شعري وسعري مصوناً غير مبتذل

They protected their honors, so it became

My poetry and passion protected, not common

وكيف أتركه من غير نافلة

مسيباً بينهم كالسي والنفل

And how can I leave it without a bonus

Let loose between them like an easy and trivial thing

تركت من كنت أطريه وأطربه

فلا ثقيلي يغنيهم ولا رملي

I left those whose company I wished and delighted me

Neither does my poetry entertain them nor my prose

وكيف أنشط في أوصاف ذي كرم

كسلان يرمي نشاط المدح بالكسل

And how can I be active in describing the generous

Lazy who throws the vigor of praise with laziness

حليت جيد حلاه وهي عاطلة

وجاءني منه جيد المدح بالعطل

I adorned my neck, and it is incapacitated

And the best of my praise came to me with inaction

أثني وتثني رجال ضمني معهم

وزن الكلام وليس الكحل كالكحل

I praise and bend men, including myself with them

The rhythm of speech, not kohl like kohl

وليس يحفظ إلا ما نطقت به

حتى كأن سوى ما قلت لم يقل

And only what I uttered is memorized

As if nothing was said other than what I said

ذنبي إلى الدهر فضل لو سترت به

عيب الحوادث لم تنسب إلى الزلل

My sin to time is surplus, if I concealed it

The flaws of events would not be attributed to lapses

إن آثرت ثروة الدنيا مجانبتي

فإنها ابنة أم الغي والخطل

If I preferred the wealth of the world to avoid me

It is the daughter of the mother of delusion and deception

ولي إذا شئت من تاج الخلافة من

أرى به شرف الأفعال في رجل

And I, when I wanted from the crown of the caliphate, from

I see through it the nobility of deeds in a man

ومن حملت له عهد الأمانة في

ود إذا حال عهد الحر لم يحل

And one I carried to him the covenant of honesty in

Affection, if the covenant of the freeman did not dissolve

ومن يصرف صرف النائبات له

آراء مكتهل في سن مقتبل

And one who spends the way of troubles for him

Opinions of a mature one in a growing age

إن جاد أو كاد في يومي ندى وردى

فاضت أنامله بالرزق والأجل

If he was generous or stingy one day, roses and flowers overflowed

His fingers with sustenance and term

يهوى الحبيبين من بأس ومن كرم

على النقيضين من جبن ومن بخل

The two lovers desire, whether in might or generosity

The opposites of cowardice and stinginess

ولا يحل بثغر حله أبداً

سوى النقيضين من أمن ومن وجل

And it is not suitable for his mouth ever

Except the opposites of safety and awe

لك العزائم والآراء إن نصبت

بالقول والفعل لم تفلل ولم تفل

Yours are the resolutions and opinions, if you set up

With words and actions, you did not weaken or weaken

ورب معضلة لما دعيت لها

كففت ما ناب من أنيابها العضل

And many a complicated issue, when I was called to it

I held back what was sharp of its sharp teeth

ومورد تتحامى الأسد مشرعه

وردته بصدور الشرع الذبل

And a pasture the lions open its vastness

I made it enter with the breasts of the strong religion

أقدمت فيه ونار الموت جامحة

وخضت بحر بلاياه ولم تبل

I advanced in it while the fire of death was raging

And I crossed its sea of afflictions and was not soaked

أطلعت فيه سنا بيض جعلت لها

سود الجماجم أبدالاً من الحلل

I rose in it with white flashing swords that I made for them

The black skulls replacements for garments

وغارة لا يشق الطيف شقتها

طويت فيها بساط الريث بالعجل

And a raid that the specter does not split its cleft

I folded in it the carpet of feathers hastily

حتى هجمت هجوم الريح في طفل

من العجاجة مستغن عن الطفل

Until I attacked the attack of the wind in a foal

From the vigour, dispensing with the foal

باشرتها بحسام غير منثلم

أبا الحسام ولم تسأل عن الأسل

I conducted it with an unbroken sword

The father of the sword and I did not ask about the captives

ما كان غدر بني أردن محتسباً

كم حادث جلل في الفكر لم يجل

What was not considered the treachery of Bani Ardan

How many magnificent events in thinking were not magnificent

ما ضر مجدك غدر جاء من نفر

أعزك الحول فاغتالوك بالحيل

What did your glory hurt the treachery that came from a group

They honored you so they assassinated you with cunning

إن أمهلتنا الليالي وهي فاعلة

فسوف نسقيهم مثلاً على مهل

If the nights spared us while doing it

We will soon make them an example slowly

لو ناضلوك على الإنصاف عرفهم

مواقع الرمي رام من بني ثعل

If they disputed you about justice, their places of shooting were known

An archer who shoots from Bani Tha'labah

لكم مشوا لك مغتالي في خمر

وعادة الأسد أن تأتى من الغيل

How much they walked to you, to the attacker with wine

And it is the habit of the lion to come from treason

قد كان قصد الأعادي أن تخف لها

وأن ينالك فيها ألسن العذل

The intention of the enemies was that it intimidates them

and that malicious tongues would hurt you

فصدك العزم عن إدراك ما طلبوا

حاشا خلالك أن تؤتى من الخلل

But your determination prevented you from gaining what they sought

It is incompatible with your integrity to be afflicted with fractures

لا يحسبوا أنك الموهون جانبه

وأن جرحك جرح غير مندمل

They do not think you are the deceived one

And that your wound is an unhealed wound

فإن عزك أقوى أن يضيعه

فقد اليسيرين من خيل ومن خول

Your glory is too strong to be lost

By the loss of some horses and footmen

يفديك يا ورد قوم ما ذكرت لهم

إلا علت كل خد وردة الخجل

People you did not mention to them ransom you, O rose

Except every cheek blushed with bashfulness

إن يستجدوا على أبليت جدتها

فما يقاس جديد المجد بالسمل

If they start something new for your old news

Then the new glory is not measured with fables

وإن أكبر غبن أن تقاس بهم

ما كل غبن من الدنيا بمحتمل

And that the biggest injustice is to compare them with you

Since not every injustice in life can be tolerated

لو كان حظ على مقدار منزلة

لم ينزل المشتري عن مرتقى زحل

If luck was according to the status

The buyer would not descend from the ascent of Saturn

أما ترى الفلك العلوي قد جعلوا

فيه سميك بعد الثور والحمل

Don't you see they made you Thick in the supreme orbit

After Taurus and Aries

أوليت أرض بني نصر وما معها

والطير لا يلتقي فيها من الوجل

I was bequeathed the land of Bani Nasr and what is with it

And birds do not gather there out of fear

فخيم الأمن فيها مذ نزلت بها

حتى لضج الكرى من صحبة المقل

So security settled in it since you descended in it

Until even planets complained of missing you

قد كنت فتحت أبواب الأمان بها

فكيف أقفلتها في ساعة القفل

You had opened in it the doors of peace

So why did you lock them at the time of locking

ما أنت بالرجل المنقوص منزلة

إذا عزلت ولا المزداد بالعمل

You are not the man whose status is reduced

If you were isolated or increased by labour

وكيف يعزل ملك جود راحته

على المكارم وال غير منعزل

And how can the king of generosity isolate his comfort

From generosity while still connected

فاسلم ودم وابق واسعد واعل واسم وسد

وقل وجد واقتدر واحلم وفز ونل

So be safe, love, stay, prosper, rise, transcend, name, block

Say, find, be able, be forbearing, win, attain

واسمع محبرة الأوصاف خاطبة ال

إنصاف طالت معانيها ولم تطل

And listen to the ode of description addressing

Justice, its meanings long but did not prolong

جاءت جزالتها رقاً ورقتها

معنى بما شئت من سهل ومن جبل

Its conciseness came Humble and its subtlety

Meaning however you wish easy or difficult
