تناولت المكارم والمساعي

بأقوى ساعد وأتم باع

I have undertaken favors and efforts

With the strongest arm and most perfect reach

أبى تاج الخلافة قول من لا

يراقب في علاك ولا يراعي

The crown of the caliphate refused the words of one who does not

Observe or take into account your ascent

بأي سجية يا ورد أثني

عليك بها من الشرف المشاع

With what temperament, O Rose, should I praise you

With it from the shared glory?

أبالمنن التي لا من فيها

فكم لك في أياد واصطناع

Is it because of the favors in which there is no favor?

For you have many generous and caring hands

أم الخلق الذي أمسى وأضحى

كريماً عند ضيق واتساع

Or is it because of the creation that has become

Generous morning and evening, during hardship and ease?

أم الهمم التي في الملك ألوت

بهمة ذي رعين والكلاع

Or is it the aspirations that the kingdom has made burn

With the aspiration of one with two meadows and a skull?

أم النوب التي أغنيت فيها

غناء المشرفي عن اليراع

Or is it the times in which you have made rich

The singing of the exalted above the vile?

وأيقنت الشجاعة ورداً

أحق فتي يلقب بالشجاع

And I was certain, O Rose, that you are the most deserving young man

To be titled "the brave"?

وكم نادت ظباه إلى قلوب

وقد خفقت رويدك لن تراعي

And how many times it called upon the gazelles to hearts

While your fragrance made them tranquil, they will not wander

فدى لأبي الحسام ولا أحاشي

رجالاً جانبوا كرم الطباع

I ransom Abu Al-Hussam, I do not conceal

Men who have avoided the bounty of character

تفضله مناقبه عليهم

كما فضل العيان على السماع

His virtues distinguish him above them

As the seen is distinguished above the heard

أرى يا ورد ضدك في انخفاض

وجدك في علو وارتفاع

I see, O Rose, your counterpart in lowness

And your presence in height and elevation

ونارك في دجنة كل خطب

ومكرمة تشب على اليفاع

And your fire in extinguishing every peril

And bounty that rivals the torrents

فللمغتر والمعتز منها

شهاب للقرى أو للقراع

For the arrogant and the prestigious among them

A comet for homes or plowers

وحق علاك فهو أجل عندي

إذا أقسمت من ملق الخداع

And it is your right, it is most precious to me

When I swear by the place of deception

لقد أحببت مدحك لا لشيء

يعود بوجه ضري وانتفاعي

I have loved to praise you, not for anything

That returns an adverse or beneficial face

ولكن لاختراعك في المعالي

خلائق لم تدنس باختراع

But for your invention in sublime traits

Untainted by any invention

رعاك الله من ملك هجان

فإنك للمكارم خير راع

May God protect you from the madness of rulers

For you are the best shepherd for favors

إذا سارت جيادك والمطايا

فيا زمع القلوب مع الزماع

When your steeds and mounts travelled

O hopes of hearts with the times

ومن لم يفتجع لنواك منا

فذاك يعد من سقط المتاع

And whoever does not mourn your departure from us

Is considered among the fallen goods

وأصعب نائبات الدهر عندي

فجيعة فرقة بعد اجتماع

And the most difficult afflictions of time for me

Are the bereavement of separation after gathering

ولاسيما فراق أشم كانت

عقارب رأيه غصص الأفاعي

Especially the separation of one whose policy was

Scorpion stings of snakes

يدافع دون ملك أبي شجاع

إذا قعد الكفاة عن الدفاع

Defending the kingdom of my father, the brave

When the inefficient fall short of defense

وداع ركابك السامي دعاني

إلى ذم التفريق والوداع

Farewell, your lofty riders called me

To blame separation and farewell

حفظت نم الضياع بلاد قوم

وأوقعنا افتراقك في الضياع

You have preserved the sleep of the people’s countries

And our separation has caused us to stray into oblivion

ستفقد منك أنفسنا حياة

وما فقد الحياة بمستطاع

We will miss the life in you, O our selves

And nothing missed in life can be regained

فلا زالت عزائمك المواضي

تسوس الدهر بالأمر المطاع

For your resolves have continued

To lead the times with obedient command
