1. From every dullard whose tongue remains forever

    fixated on the letter rāʾ or on qāf.

  2. If he thinks that the baseness of his birth

    will shield him from my fury and the bitterness of my deadly poison,

  3. lions devour dogs when they overstep

    their bounds—and lions are not weak.

  4. Let me weigh down his bridle with invective:

    mules are much given to breaking promises.

  5. Never trust a man of vices thereafter,

    and beware the good faith of a snatching thief.

  6. For one who hopes for honesty among the base

    is like one who hopes for fruit from the willow.
