1. أفخر فحسبك ما أوتيت من حسب

    كفاك مجدك من إرث ومكتسب

    I boast, and your lineage suffices you, pride

    Your glory from inheritance and gain suffices you

  2. لولا الحفاظ على الأنساب مكرمة

    أغناك فضلك أن تعزى إلى نسب

    If preserving lineages were not honoured

    Your favour would suffice you to be attributed to ancestry

  3. وقد رأينا رسول الله أشرف من

    نعده وهو منسوب إلى العرب

    And we saw Allah's Messenger as nobler than

    Those we count though attributed to the Arabs

  4. فليهن دولة مصر أنها نصرت

    من آل سعد بخير ابن وخير أب

    So let the state of Egypt pride itself on supporting

    The best son and father from Sa`d's family

  5. بشاور وشجاع عز نصرهما

    عزت على طارق الأيام والنوب

    With shrewdness and courage their victory brings honour

    Honour against the vicissitudes of time and fate

  6. غيثان إن وهبا ليثان إن وثبا

    فاضا على الخلق بالإعطاء والعطب

    Two rains, if they pour lions, if they pounce

    Lavish on people with gifts and wounds

  7. هو الكفيل ولكن قد كفلت له

    أبا الفوارس نجح السعي والطلب

    He is the guarantor, but has guaranteed for him

    The father of cavaliers, successful is the effort and request

  8. لو لم تناصب عداه دون مطلبه

    ما قر من دسته في أشرف الرتب

    If his enemies had not plotted against his request

    He would not have settled into the noblest positions

  9. وما أتته من الأيام نازلة

    إلا وسيفك فيها كاشف الكرب

    And no ordeal has come to him from the days

    Except your sword relieves it of hardship

  10. مواطن لم يغب لما حضرت بها

    والشبل إن يحم غاب الليث لم يغب

    In dangerous situations, you did not fail when you attended

    And the cub, if it defends, the lion did not fail when absent

  11. دارت عليك أمور الملك قاطبة

    وهل تدور رحى إلا على قطب

    The affairs of the kingdom revolved around you in their entirety

    Does a mill wheel revolve except around a pole?

  12. أصبحت منه كنوز الشمس مشرقة

    أو لا كمثل فرند السيف ذي الشطب

    Through it the treasures of the shining sun have risen

    Or like the outshining of the sharp sword

  13. كم عقدة من خطوب الدهر مبرمة

    قد حل سعدك منها عقدة الذنب

    How many convoluted affairs of fate convened

    Your good fortune undid from them the knot of sin!

  14. في كل يوم إلى الأعداء مرتحل

    يشكو به الظهر جور السرج والقتب

    Every day to the enemies setting forth

    The back complaining of saddle and strap

  15. وعسكر كأتي السيل مندفعاً

    إما إلى صعد في الأرض أو صبب

    And an army rushing like torrents

    Either to high ground or a downpour in the land

  16. كانت لواتة حياً لا يروعه

    حي وشعباً صحيحاً غير منشعب

    Lu’lu’ah would have been alive, frightened of no

    Living man, and an upright folk without divergence

  17. وطالما أمعنوا في البغي واحتقروا

    جر الكتاب والتهديد بالكتب

    And often they persisted in aggression and scorned

    To heed the Scripture and threats of books

  18. وكم دعتها ملوك العصر قبلكم

    إلى المجير فلم تسمع ولم تجب

    How many kings of the age before you

    Called them to protection but they did not listen or respond

  19. حتى رماهم أبو الفتح الذي ضمنت

    أسيافه فتح باب المعقل الأشب

    Until Abu al-Futuh, guaranteed by whose swords

    Was the opening of the door to the mighty stronghold

  20. بث الجيوش على التدريج فانبعثت

    في غزوهم سرباً كالوابل السرب

    Dispatching armies gradually, they set forth

    In attacking them, flock after flock like the starling flocks

  21. وكنت آخر سهم في كنانته

    وفارس الروع من يحمي حمى العقب

    And you were the last arrow in his quiver

    And the frightening horseman protecting the tribe’s hindmost part

  22. ولم يزل عندهم منع ومقدرة

    وأمرهم مستمر غير مضطرب

    And they had no more strength or ability

    And their command was in disorder and chaos

  23. حتى نهضت فلم تنهض قوائمهم

    والرعب يخفق في الأحشاء والركب

    Until you rose up and their pillars did not rise

    And terror fluttered in the breast and shoulder

  24. وسار من ذكرك العالي مقدمة

    كانت طليعة ذاك الذعر والرعب

    And report of you went ahead

    Which was the vanguard of that panic and alarm

  25. وما على القوم من عار إذا اعصتموا

    أبا الفوارس خوفاً منك بالهرب

    A people have no shame if they disobey

    The father of cavaliers fearing you by flight

  26. ولو قدحت شهاب العزم معتزماً

    حرب الكواكب خافت أنفس الشهب

    If you had sparked the flame of resolve, intent upon

    Waging war on the stars, the meteors would have feared

  27. وما لواتة بالمحقور جانبها

    لكنك البحر مداً وهي كالقلب

    Lu’lu’ah is not on par with it

    But you are the sea, a flooding, and it a mere heart

  28. ولو وصفتهم بالضعف ما نسبت

    إليك مكرمة في القهر والغلب

    And if I described them as weak, I would not attribute

    To you the honour in subduing and conquering

  29. كسر العمود هو الفتح الذي جبرت

    بن ظباكم عماد الملك والطنب

    Breaking the column is the opening you forced

    For the pillar of kingship and authority to bow to you

  30. يد لكم في رقاب الجند تشكركم

    لأجلها ألسن الأيام والحقب

    You have a hand over the necks of soldiers that tongues

    Of eras and epochs thank you for

  31. رد الإله بكم إقطاعهم ولقد

    كانت على ما مضى نهبى المنتهى

    Through you God restored their fiefdom and indeed

    What is past has vanished to the ends

  32. وسوف تشكركم آثار نعمتكم

    في جند مصر كشكر الروض للسحب

    And traces of your favours will thank you

    Among Egypt’s army like the prairie thanks the clouds

  33. عممتم الناس بالحسنى فشكركم

    دين على ذمة الأشعار والخطب

    You have ennobled people with good, so fulfilling your debt

    Is an obligation on the verses and sermons

  34. وزاد في خطر الآداب أنكم

    أغليتم بعد رخص قيمة الأدب

    And the prestige of literature has increased

    Since you have made the value of culture precious after cheapness

  35. وإن شاعركم المثني عليك بما

    شادت مماليك يستغني عن الكذب

    Your poet who praises you for what

    Has elated servants needs no lies

  36. لما أرحت ضمير الملك من تعب

    When you relieved the king’s conscience of fatigue

    Poems became occupied with serving you
