أمالي من عذولكم عذير

علقت بغادر يهتز عطفاً
وردفاً مثلما اهتز الغدير
I clung to a fickle one swaying with passion,
Tossed like waves in a pond.
غرير ساعدتني في هواه
ليال شاقها من غزير
A flirt who aided my love,
On nights enduring heavy rain.
يجدد عهدها زفرات وجد
هي الجمرات قيل لها زفير
My sighs renew the pact,
Burning embers called zefeer.
إذا صعدت من الأنفاس نار
فحد مطارها حد مطير
When fires ascend from breaths,
Their extent is that of rainclouds.
وكم حمي النسيم بنار وجدي
وقد بردت حلي بل ثغور
How often has the breeze warmed the fires of my passion,
Yet my reason has cooled, even my emotions.
وشقت عن ودائعهن وهناً
خدور أشرقت منها بدور
I have revealed their secrets in yearning,
Dimples shining like full moons.
ومالت فوق أرداف قدود
وجالت فوق أجياد شعور
They leaned over shapely hips,
And swayed over noble steeds.
ولما راقنا حسن أغرنا
عليه وكان ما كره الغيور
When we admired their beauty we were tempted,
Though the jealous hated it.
مجاج لا يدور به زجاج
ولكن الثغور هي المدير
Neither revolving cups nor glass,
But lips are the circulation.
هفا أرج الجمان على ثغور
إذا فاهت تأرَّجت الخمور
Ah, the aroma of beautiful visages on lips,
When they smile, wine is perfumed.
ولما هزنا طرب وأنس
وبان على أسرتنا السرور
When we trembled with joy and intimacy,
Happiness was evident in our homes.
نظمنا في ضياء الدين شعراً
على صفحاته للصدق نور
We composed poetry in the light of religion,
On its pages truth has light.
نشرفه بذكر علاك فيه
كما شرفت بقومك شهرزور
We honor it by mentioning you in it,
As you have honored your people, Shahrzur.
ونعلم أن مدحاً لم يقيد
به إحسانكم كذب وزور
We know no eulogy constrained it,
Only sincerity, not lies and falsehood.
وأم المكرمات لمن عداكم
من الأولاد مقلاة نزور
The mother of all favors from other than you
Is a small frying pan we visit.
بكل قرارة للدين منكم
وللدنيا عميد أو وزير
With every ember for the faith from you,
And for the world a pillar or minister.
تملك قاسم ودي وحمدي
بأخرق هي الروض النضير
Qasim and Hamdi possess my affection,
It is the exquisite garden.
فكم غناكم قلم وسيف
فأطربكم صليل أو صرير
How the pen and sword have praised you,
Melodic ringing or humming pleased you.
وقل الناصرون بأرض مصر
فكان وداده نهم النصير
The supporters said in Egypt’s land,
His friendship was the ally’s appetite.
وتابع بره نحوي ولكن
كما يتتابع النوء المطير
My syntax followed it, but as
Rainclouds follow each other.
رآني والعيون بها تعام
ومات الأعمى سواء والبصير
He saw me, though distracted,
The blind and sighted died equal.
فكم كرم وإكرام وبشر
كأن طلوع طلعتها بشير
How much generosity, honor and good tidings,
As if its dawn were the first light.
منايح بل مدائح ليس منا
جميعاً فيهما من يستعير
Sighs but praises, we are not
All among them borrowing.
جميل من ندى وجميل ذكر
قليل أن يرى لهما نظير
Beautiful with dew and beautiful in name,
Rare to see the like of them both.
فضائل من فضائلك استمدت
كما فاضت على الخلج البحور
Merits from your merits I drew,
As seas poured over meadows.
من الفقر التي تبني المعالي
ويستغني بها الحسب الفقير
From the poverty that builds greatness,
And from it the lowly gain wealth.
شكرت بها ودادك وهو شكر
يزورك بعد أوله أخير
I thanked your affection, a thanks
Which revisits after the first and last.
