1. He has made supplication and praise to you his constant task—

    a servant for whom you joined radiant splendor to high renown.

  2. Your servant’s very soul would ransom you; you taught him,

    after the dread of poverty, what riches are.

  3. You did good until I thought that you had sworn

    that God would never see you except doing good.

  4. You set me free, and the bond of clientage is yours; so if I die,

    then shield my kin from losing the most loving among us.

  5. And when petitioners come to you and the question is asked, “Who

    is so-and-so’s patron among the governors?” then say, “I am.”

  6. I report to you—and do not deceive you—that I am

    amid bounty surpassing the furthest reach of desire,

  7. O my provider, here where the people have said to me:

    “It is impossible that provision like yours could ever be secured.”

  8. Between me and al-Lāsibiyya lies a long, arduous distance;

    from it, the staff of my back has arched and bent.

  9. So compensate your servant for it, and show mercy to his helplessness,

    with a flourishing, dust-brown tract called Marsan.
