1. يا أيها الملك الذي

    كل الملوك له رعيه

    O king, to whom

    all other kings are subjects,

  2. إن كنت من خدامكم

    فعلام لا أعطى الحذيه

    if I am among your servants,

    why am I not granted a reward?

  3. أو كنت من أضيافكم

    فالضيف أولى بالعطيه

    Or if I am among your guests,

    the guest has the first claim to giving.

  4. والله ما أبقى الخمو

    ل على وليك من بقيه

    By God, obscurity has left no—

    —remnant of your loyal servant.

  5. ووحق رأسك إن حا

    لي لو علمت بها رزيه

    By your head, my condi—

    —tion, if you knew it, is a calamity.

  6. وإذا هممت بكشف با

    طنها أبت نفس أبيه

    And when I resolve to unveil its in—

    —ward truth, a proud soul refuses.

  7. لا تنظرن إلى التجمل

    إن عادته رديه

    Do not look upon the show of finery;

    its accustomed state is wretched.

  8. وف لي بعهدك إنني

    لك فيه من أو في البريه

    Keep your promise to me, for I am,

    in this, among the most faithful of all creation to you—

  9. لله أو لمدائحي

    أو خدمتي أو للحمية

    for God’s sake, or for my songs of praise,

    or for my service, or for honor’s sake.
