طمع المرء في الحياة غرور

وطويل الآمال فيها قصير

A man's greed for life is vanity

And one with high hopes in it is short

وحياة الإنسان ثوب معار

واجب أن يرده المستعير

And a human's life is a borrowed garment

That must be returned by the borrower

يفرح المرء بالمسرات أحيا

ناً وهيهات أن يدوم السرور

A man rejoices in delights sometimes

Alas, happiness does not last

ويريد الصفاء من ود دنيا

لم يزل في صفائها تكدير

And he wants clarity from the affection of worldly life

There has always been turmoil in its clarity

طالما عوشرت فغرت وعزت

وبدت في السرور منها الشرور

It has tempted for long, so it betrayed and became mighty

And evil emerged out of its happiness

ولكم واثق بها خدعته

وهو مغرى بحبها مغرور

And how often has it deceived those who trusted it

While they were fooled by loving it

ولكم قدر الفتى فأتته

نوب لم يحط بها التقدير

And how often it came upon the youth

Misfortunes that fate did not foresee

ضاع تدبير حازم لم يعنه

من له الأمر فيه والتدبير

The planning of the wise was lost; it did not benefit

The one who commands and manages affairs

ليت يوم الاثنين لم تبتسم لي

عن محياه لليالي ثغور

If only Monday did not smile at me

With its bright face, piercing nights

طلعت شمسه بيوم عبوس

حير الطير شره المستطير

Its sun rose on a gloomy day

Its evil confused the birds in flight

وتجلى صباحه عن جبين

إثمد الليل فوق مذرور

And its morning shone from a forehead

That darkened the night above the distressed

صبح المجد في صبيحة ذاك الي

وم غبراء صيلم عنقفير

The glory of the morning shone in the dawn of that day

A dusty, desolate dawn

بلغ الدهر عندها ما تمنى

وعليها كان الزمان يدور

Fate accomplished then what it desired

And time revolved around it

حادث ظلت الحوادث مما

شاهدته من جوره تستجير

An event that calamities witnessed

Seeking refuge from its tyranny

ترجف الأرض حين تخبر عنه

وتكاد السماء منه تمور

The earth trembles when it tells of it

And the sky almost crumbles because of it

طبق الأرض من مصاب أبي الغ

ارات خطب له النجوم تغور

The earth is enveloped in grief over the calamity of Abu al-Gharat

The stars have disappeared into its abyss

فض ختم الحياة عنك حمام

لا يراعي إذناً ولا يستشير

The seal of life was broken from you without seeking permission or counsel

You ascended to glory rapidly

وترقت إلى ثبير خطوب

شاخ تحت التراب منها ثبير

While the best of us lies under dust

Nothing but His ordained decree befell us

ما تخطى إلى جلالك إلا

قدر أمره علينا قدير

Able over us and Powerful

You wasted your life foolishly

بذرت عمرك الليالي سفاهاً

فسيعلمن ما جنى التبذير

And you will know the results of wastefulness

The drunk will wake at a time of woe

سوف يصحو سكران وقت ويلقى

سورة الخمر شارب مخمور

And find the pain of the wine while intoxicated

Tell the turn of fate - in what time

قل لصرف الردى بأي زمان

قدت صعباً إباؤه مشهور

Has overcoming it become famously difficult?

And with what incantations have you reached

وبأي الرقى توصلت

حتى سكن الصعب واستكان النفور

Until the difficult calmed and the defiant yielded?

O savior of mankind, is there a meeting

يا غياث الأنام هل من لقاء

تشتفي لوعة به وزفير

Where anguish and sighing are healed?

O leader of armies, are you aware

يا أمير الجيوش هل لك علم

أن حر الأسى علينا أمير

That the heat of sorrow is upon us, O Prince?

For you left a grave that you filled

إن قبراً حللته لغني

إن دهراً فارقته لفقير

And an era that you abandoned for the poor

Can the kiss of your soil heal an illness

هل يداوى بلثم تربك داء

جره فقدك الأجاج المرير

Brought by your loss, the bitter pain?

Eulogies and lineage are useless, and elegy stands

عطل المدح والنسيب وقامت

قدم الرثاء وهي عثور

Stumbling, for you the stars disappear

If I stay here eulogizing, I am a coward

إن أقم فيك والرثاء جبان

فمديحي كما علمت جسور

For you know my praise is bold

O father of delegates and guests, bestow favor

يا أبا الوفد والضيوف تفضل

بقراهم وغيرك المأمور

Upon them without others being commanded

And reward them by veiling your tomb

وأجرهم أن يحجبوا عن ضريح

حل فيه منك العزيز المجير

Where the glorious protector settled

Perhaps seeing with their eyes will soothe souls

فلعل العيان يشفي نفوساً

نغلت من همومهن الصدور

Whose chests are burdened with worries

Being away from you is difficult

وبعيد عنك السلو بشيء

ولك الفكر موطن والضمير

But thoughts and conscience are with you

You will pass and our new sorrow

سوف تمضي وحزننا مستجد

بعد ذا الشهر أشهر ودهور

Will persist after this month, for months and eras

Time should not think you are forgotten

لا يظن الزمان أنك تنسى

عظم الخطب فالسلو عسير

Forgetting great calamities is difficult

Patience is good in tribulation, and this

يحسن الصبر في البلاء وهذا

فادح ماعليه منا صبور

Is a tremendous one, with none of us patient

Your absence heated eyes

سخنت بالبعاد عنك عيون

كنت حياً وطرفهن قرير

That were cool when you lived

Mourning you made me forget

أنست بالحداد فيك إلى أن

شجبت أوجه وطالت شعور

Until faces frowned and hair grew long

Grief for you kept me up at night and slept

سهرت حسرة عليك ونامت

مقل في وفائها تقصير

My eyelids failing in loyalty

Do not think the days you are dead

لا تظن الأيام أنك ميت

لم يمت من ثناؤه منشور

One whose glory is published does not die

You have the pleasure of pilgrims and for the people

لك رضوان زائر ولقوم

هلكوا فيك منكر ونكير

Who died with you, Munkar and Nakir

The caliphate preserved your covenant faithfully

حفظت عهدك الخلافة حفظاً

أنت منها به خليق جدير

You were rightly suited for it

Your successors did good by us after you

أحسنت بعدك الصنيعة فينا

فاستوت منك غيبة وحضور

So your absence equaled your presence

And God refused to fulfill against it

وأبى الله أن يتم عليها

ما نوى حاسد لها أو كفور

What an envious traitor plotted

They narrowed the pit of scheming but

ضيقوا حفرة المكيدة لكن

ضاق بالناكثين ذاك الحفير

That plotter was strapped by the narrowness

And they plotted against the palaces by fate

وتجروا على القصور بقدر

وسراج الوفاء فيها ينير

While the lamp of loyalty in it gives light

Sanctuary and holy month were violated

حرم آمن وشهر حرام

هتكت منهما عرى وستور

Their covenants and veils torn

Neither fasting deterred them, nor a

لا صيام نهاهم لا إمام

طاهر ترب أخمصيه طهور

Pure Imam whose heels are purified

They sullied the covenant of guidance knowingly

أخفروا ذمة الهدى بعد علم

ويقين أن الإمام خفير

And with certainty that the Imam would punish

And if the shepherds of the deserts

وإذا ما وفت خدور البوادي

بذمام فما تقول القصور

Were held by the bridle, what would the palaces say?

The worshipping Imam grew angry until

غضب العاضد الإمام فكادت

فرقاً منه أن تذوب الصخور

Mountain rocks almost melted from his wrath

He took vengeance on those who opposed him firmly

أدرك الثأر من عداه بعزم

لم يكن في النشاط منه فتور

Never wearying in his vigor

The proof of God was made upright by his victory and guidance

واستقامت بنصره وهداه

حجة الله واستمر المرير

And the bitter struggle continued

When one guardian leaves this guardian succeeds him

إذا مضى كافل فهذا كفيل

أو وزير ولى فهذا وزير

One minister dies and this minister replaces him

An era of righteousness succeeded by

دولة صالحية خلفتها

دولة عادلية لا تجور

An era of justice that does not tyrannize

It proclaimed his remembrance and revived its glory

نشرت ذكرها وأحيت علاها

هكذا هكذا يكون النشور

Thus, thus is the resurrection

If his eyes saw your deeds, they would be content

لو رأت عينه فعالك قرت

واستقرت بساكنيها القبور

And settle calmly in their sockets

All the good you do

كل ما أنت فاعل من جميل

فهو عنه مخلد مأثور

Is eternally recorded and preserved

Noble honor and lofty glory

شرف باذخ ومجد رفيع

يستوي فيه أول وأخير

Where beginning and end are equal

Fate succeeded its woes with bliss

أعقب الدهر بؤسه بنعيم

رب حزن في الطي منه سرور

How much sorrow produces joy!

We did not complain of the strikes of fate

ما شكونا كسر النوائب حتى

قيل في الحال كسركم مجبور

Until it was said: “Your breaker is compelled”

The supreme supporter gave victory to supporters

نصر الناصر العلى بالعوالي

ولنعم المولى ونعم النصير

What an excellent Lord, and what an excellent supporter!

A king he long desired - crown

ملك طالما تمناه تاج

ورتاج ومنبر وسرير

and diadem, pulpit and throne

If the hand were empty before him, in awe

لو خلا الدست قبله ومن وقار

خف شوقاً إليه دست وقور

A reverent hand would long for him

We never doubted, for in speculations is certainty

ما شككنا وفي الظنون يقين

أن أمر الورى إليه يصير

That authority in the world would come to him

The treasure of the imams was not called

لم يلقب ذخر الأئمة إلا

وهو كنز لملكهم مذخور

Except that he is their treasured, hoarded treasure

The ministry never visited his door

لم تزر بابه الوزارة إلا

وله العير قبلها والنفير

Except that he had the caravans before it

He never held the position of regent

لم يحز رتبة الكفالة إلا

والليالي إليه فيها تشير

Except that the nights gestured toward him

He did not desire to preside except that there appeared

ما أراد الجلوس إلا تجلى

ملك أبلج وملك كبير

A resplendent kingdom and great kingdom

The reverent hand shone from him with the light of a face

أشرق الدست منه عن نور وجه

يرجع الطرف عنه وهو حسير

At which eyes turn away overwhelmed

He is the sun of guidance and his noble sons

هو شمس الهدى وأبناء رزي

ك نجوم من حوله وبدور

Are like stars encircling it

They are the right hand against enemies when they charge

هم يمين على العدى حين يسطو

وهو قطب به رحاهم تدور

While he is the axis around which their steeds rotate

They rode the lofty horses with ascent

ركبوا صهوة العلى بصعود

مالهم من صعودهن حدور

With no limits to their ascent

The lions that the stubborn resisted

الليوث التي رداها عنيد

والغيوث التي نداها بحور

And refugees the oceans cried out to

They calmed wild hearts though

سكنوا طائش القلوب وكانت

مرجل الشر والبلاء يفور

The furnace of evil and affliction raged

They made the necks yield until

وأقاموا ميل الرقاب إلى أن

تركوها مهابة وهي صور

Leaving them in awe, humbled

They strengthened the kingdom in the enemies' eyes

عززوا الملك من عيون الأعادي

بذكور تقلدتها ذكور

With men girded by men

Every eye was blinded to their perfection

عميت عن كمالهم كل عين

أي طرف يضر وهو ضرير

What eye can harm while blind?

They carried their kingdom and protected their allies

حملوا ملكهم وحاطوا حماهم

فهم فوقه سوار وسور

So they are above it like wrist and wall

A household - if you seek their advice

أهل بيت إذا نصحتك عنهم

فهم اللب والأنام القشور

They are the heart and people are the husks

I never equated them though my praise

لم أعرهم شهادة مع أني

لمديحي من فضلهم أستعير

Derives excellence from them

The radiant one who ransoms them leads them

سادهم أبلج يفديه منهم

بأبيه صغيرهم والكبير

Whether their elders or young

The just - the nights' changes swore

عادل أقسمت صروف الليالي

أنها في زمانه لا تغير

They do not change in his era

He governed the world's affairs with resolve and determination

ساس أمر الورى بعزم وحزم

أغنياه عما يقول المشير

Needless of advisors' talk

Independent, bearing alone what heavy woes

مستقل ثقل الخطوب اللواتي

تنحني تحت ثقلهن الظهور

Make even mountains bow down

Willingly and unwillingly, souls accepted him

رضيته النفوس طوعاً وكرها

واطمأنت على يديه الأمور

And affairs were settled by his hand

His bravery and generosity conquered benefaction

نصر الجود بأسه بالعطايا

فالندى للردى أخ ونصير

Dew is the brother and ally of his munificence

Examine the history of kings where

طالعوا سيرة الملوك ففيها

خبر الجود عنهم مسطور

Tales of generosity about them are recorded

And look at it to learn the superiority of a reign

وانظروها لتعلموا فضل ملك

ماله في بني الزمان نظير

With no peer amongst people of the age

Egypt through his justice and aid

إن مصراًً بعدله ونداه

بلد طيب ورب غفور

Is a good land and gracious Lord

Let no ignorant versifier say

لا يقولن جاهل بالقوافي

ذهب الناقد السميع البصير

The discerning critic with hearing and sight is gone

For Al-Marjī hoped in Abū Shujā`

فالمرجى أبو شجاع خبير

بمقادير أهلهن خبير

Expert in their metrics, expert

I feared the caller would say

كنت أخشى بأن يقول المنادي

أيها الضيف جف عنك الغدير

"O guest, the water skins are empty"

But he began addressing me kindly

فابتداني بفضله قائلاً لي

لك ظل فيه المحل الأثير

"You have a place in it, O dear friend"

Then the hand that when jealous

ثم أدى اليد التي كل خل

حاسد لي من أجلها وغيور

Envied me extended

It ruled heart and tongue - this

ملك القلب واللسان فهذا

مضمر حبه وهذا شكور

Hidden in his love, and this grateful
