سقم الحاظ الحسان الخرد
صحة أهدت سقام الجسد
The illness of sight, the beauty of the young maid,
Brought health, having gifted the illness of the body.
حبذا طل جفون أنبتت
حمرة الورد على الخد الندي
How excellent is the gleam of eyelids that grew,
The redness of roses on the soft cheek.
لحظات لم تزل أسهمها
يتولعن بقلب الأسد
Moments whose arrows,
Still smolder in the heart of the lion.
ظبية شرط ظباها أنها
في الهوى من قتلته لا تدي
A gazelle whose love she made conditional, that
In passion she who kills him will not compensate.
يحكم المطل على ميعادها
بغد بالمطل عن بعد غد
The promising one rules for his appointment,
With tomorrow by promising after tomorrow.
أنا من وجدي بها في كبد
وحياة قد أذابت كبدي
I am from my love for her in anguish,
And a life that melted my liver.
زاد في لوعة وجدي أنها
أسقمتني وأتت في عودي
Increasing my love's torment, that she
Made me ill and came during my recovery.
كلما ضل الهوى في فرعها
فعلى برق الثنايا يهتدي
Whenever desire strays in its branches,
It is guided by the flashes of lightning.
حرم الميل على مقلتها
كحل أزرى بكحل الأثمد
The inclination is forbidden to her eyelashes,
Like kohl that is more intense than deep black.
غادة في لحظها بل لفظها
نفثة تحسن حل العقد
Ghada, in her glance, no, her utterance,
A breath that can untie a knot.
مزجت برد اللمى والراح لي
في ثنايا خلقت من برد
She mixed the coolness of dew and breeze for me
In her sides created of coolness.
ناولتنيها فلم أدر إلى
أي شمس منهما طالت يدي
She handed it to me yet I did not know
To which sun of them my hand extended.
غير أني صدت هماً طالما
فرخت بيضته في خلدي
Except that I repelled worries for so long
Their eggs hatched in my mind.
نبرات حركت ساكنها
نقرات من غزال غرد
Melodies that stirred its stillness,
Taps from a singing gazelle.
يا ليالي أسلفتني أرقاً
أنت في جاه الليالي الجدد
Oh nights that lent me insomnia,
You owe nights of new sleep.
قد وهبناك لأيام بها
قبض العدل بنات المعتدي
We gifted you days wherein
The hand of justice grasped the transgressing daughters.
ووجدنا مدح سيف الدين إذ
خانت الأيام أقوى العدد
And we found praising Sayf al-Din when
The days betrayed the strongest number.
ملك من آل أيوب له
كرم الفرع وطيب المحتد
A king from the Ayyubid family, he has
The generosity of the branch and sweet forebears.
يعرف الزائر في غرته
رونق البشر ومحض السؤدد
The visitor recognizes in his nobility
The beauty of the face and pure giving.
خير من جرد في يوم الوغى
بارقاً على متن برق اجرد
Better than one who stripped on the day of battle,
A lightning bolt on the back of a bare horse.
يتغنى في الطلى صارمه
بلحون لم تكن عن معبد
His sharp sword sings in brave acts
With melodies that were not of the temple.
شعلة تقدح من زند الوغى
شرراً ما كمنت في الزبد
A flame that sparks from the flint of battle
Sparks that did not hide in the tinder.
ونصول في قنا ظامية
ريها ماء غدير الزرد
And attacks in a fierce dark night
Watered by the pool of the ostrich.
كلسان الصل أو كالنجم في
ليل نقع طالع في أملد
Like the blade of a cutting sword or a star in
The darkest night rising above.
ضمنت أسيافه بذل القرى
من عداه لبنات الفدفد
His swords guaranteed giving quarter to enemies
Except for those who attacked the bubbly maidens.
وبنات الريش يحملن إلى
قلب أعدائك سن الأسود
And the maidens carried to
The hearts of your enemies the teeth of lions.
لك من نفسك لا من قومها
حسب أمسى كثير الحسد
From yourself, not from her people, you have
A lineage that became very envied.
حسنات تبتلي حاسدها
من علاها بالمقيم المقعد
Virtues that try their envious ones
From heights with the established place.
أنت إن عدوك شخصاً واحداً
فكذا الواحد أصل العدد
You, even if your enemy is one man
Thus the one is the origin of the number.
شرف قد أصبحت همته
تسحب الأذيال فوق الفرقد
Nobility that your determination became
Dragging the train above the carpet.
وقف الفضل على أفعالها
أي فضل في فتى لم يحسد
Virtue stopped at her actions -
What virtue in a young man who was not envied?
إنما يمتاز عن أشباهه
سيد يمدح وسط المشهد
He is only distinguished from his peers,
A master praised amidst the scene.
لا تلوموه على بذل الندى
فهو طبع خامس في المولد
Do not blame him for giving dew,
It is an innate trait from birth.
وانتقال الطبع شيء معوز
مثل ما أعوز لين الجلمد
The transference of innate traits is permissible
Like the softness of flexible steel.
قل لنا كيف اختصرت المرتقى
وتناولت المعالي باليد
Tell us how you summarized the path
And grasped the heights with your hand?
وتوصلت إلى أبعادها
بقريب السعي أو بالأبعد
And how you reached its distant parts
With effort nearby or farthest?
يا فريد المجد لم لا تشتكي
في المعالي وحشة المنفرد
Oh singular in glory, why do you not complain
Of the heights and the loneliness of the individual?
جمعت فيك خصال لم يبت
مثلها مجتمعاً في أحد
You gathered traits no one characterized
United in anyone before.
اليمين السبط في يوم الندى
والجبين الطلق في يوم الداد
The flowing hand on the day of generosity
And the smooth forehead on the day of conflict.
ووفاء بعقود أخبرت
عن يمين ظاهر المعتقد
And keeping faith in convictions you informed of
From an apparent believing hand.
يا أبا بكر بن أيوب استمع
جوهراً شف عن المنتقد
Oh Abu Bakr ibn Ayyub, listen
To a jewel unveiled for the critic.
صاغه فيك خبير لم يزل
حاذقاً في نظم در بدد
An expert crafted it in you, he did not cease to be
Skillful in composing scattered pearls.
ينصب الأشراك من ألفاظه
طالباً صيد المعاني الشرد
He arranges the verses from his words
Seeking the hunted scattered meanings.
صنتها عن كل فدم جاهل
يحسب الجيد جهلاً كالردي
He protected them from every ignorant fool
Who thinks the worthless is ignorance like rubbish.
صدئت مرآته عن نورها
فرأى المصقول منها كالصدي
Its mirror rusted from its light
So he saw the polished of it like opaque.
لم أجالس قط إلا ملكاً
رافعاً لي عن مقام المنشد
I never sat except with a king
Raising me above the position of the composer.
طالما نلت الأماني بعدها
نزه الرحمن وجهي ويدي
I attained wishes after them,
Pure of face and hand from the blessing of the Merciful.
غير أن الشمس لما طلعت
في لياليكم وأحمت جسدي
But when the sun rose in your nights
And warmed my body.
زرتكم زورة حر لا يرى
عزة الجدوى بذل المجتدي
I visited you a free visit, not seeing
The value of profit in the asker's toil.
أنا في أصفاد غرم فادح
وعليكم فكها بالصفد
I am in shackles of tremendous debt
And it is upon you to release them from the shackles.
النمير العذب من أفواهكم
وفمي يمتص مص الربد
The sweet limpid water from your mouths,
While mine sucks the ice.
ولقوم زبدة الوطب الذي
لم أفز منه بغير الزبد
And the cream of fruit I did not gain
Anything from without the butter oil.
قد وردنا من أبي بكر إلى
واسع الجمة عذب المورد
We came to the vast audacious Abu Bakr
The sweet ample spring.
ومدحناه بشعر جل بل
دق عن نهج الكلام العقد
And we praised him with poetry that surpassed
The path of strung speech.
راضه فارسه حتى أتى
سلس الأعطاف سهل المقود
Pleased, his horseman came
Smooth in gait, easy to lead.
لم أدنسه بقصدي أحداً
بعد قصدي للعزيز الأوحد
I did not taint it by my aim anyone
After my aim for the singular beloved.
