1. تبسم في ليل الشباب مشيب

    فأصبح برد الهم وهو قشيب

    He smiled in the night of youth though he was gray

    So morning came with the coldness of worry and he was bleak

  2. وأنكرت ما قد كنتما تعرفانه

    وقد يحضر الرشد الفتي ويغيب

    We did not recognize what we used to know

    And reason comes and goes in youth

  3. ومن شارف الخمسين عاماً فإنه

    وإن عاش بني الأهل فهو غريب

    He who nears fifty years even if

    He lives among his family, he is a stranger

  4. وما أبقت الدنيا علينا وإنما

    سهام المنايا مخطئ ومصيب

    The days did not remain for us, rather

    The arrows of death miss and hit

  5. على أن أنفاس الحياة شهية

    وأرواحنا تغنى بها وتذوب

    Yet the breaths of life are sweet

    And our souls sing with joy and melt

  6. تجرعنا الأيام كأساً مريرة

    وظاهرها يحلو لنا ويطيب

    We drank the days a bitter cup

    Its surface tastes sweet and good to us

  7. ونزري عليها جاهدين بألسن

    تخالفها بالاعتقاد قلوب

    And we force with our tongues to oppose it

    While our hearts believe otherwise

  8. كأن عقول الخلق سرب حمام

    تحوم على أحواضها وتلوب

    It is as if people’s minds are a flock of doves

    Circling around its basins confused

  9. وكم ضاع تدبير الفتى وهو حازم

    ومالت به الآمال وهو لبيب

    How much the young man’s wisdom is lost

    While he is decisive, hopes lead him astray

  10. وكم غره منها سراب بقيعة

    تصدقه العينان وهو كذوب

    How much it deceived him like a mirage

    That the eyes believe though it’s an illusion

  11. ومن عاش في ظل القناعة لم يبل

    جفاه عدو أو جفاه حبيب

    Whoever lives in the shade of contentment

    Will not be deprived by enemies or loved ones

  12. خليلي قولا لليالي نيابة

    ومازال خل المرء عنه ينوب

    My friend, send words to the nights on my behalf

  13. تغير بعد الصالح العيش فاغتدت

    محاسن أيامي وهن عيوب

    Good living has changed after righteousness

    And the beauty of my days became flaws

  14. رضيت رضى المغلوب عن أخذ ثأره

    ولي غضب في النائبات أديب

    I was pleased like the defeated satisfied without revenge

    And I have anger in tribulations I chastise

  15. دعوتكم أن تصفوا من نفوسكم

    فهل منكم عند الدعاء مجيب

    I called upon you to purify yourselves

    Is there among you one who answers my call?

  16. وإلا فما عندي سوى الصبر قدرة

    ألا إن صبر الصابرين قريب

    If not, then I have nothing but patience

    Indeed, the patience of the patient is near

  17. وغيضت من زهر الدموع طوالعاً

    لها في غروب المقلتين غروب

    I picked flowers of tears at the rising

    That sets behind my eyelids

  18. أيجدب خدي من ربيع مدامعي

    وربعي من نعمى يديه خصيب

    Does my cheek dry of the spring of my tears

    While my livelihood from His blessings is fruitful?

  19. وتذهب عني لوعة الحزن والأسى

    ولي جيئة في رزقه وذهوب

    The agony of sadness and sorrow leaves me

    And I have hopes in His gifts and deprivation

  20. وأقصرت من ندبي له كل ساعة

    وفي كبدي الحرى عليه ندوب

    I shortened my elegy for Him every moment

    While sorrows for Him have scars in my heart

  21. أينسى وفي العينين صورة وجه

    ه الكريم وعهد الانتقال قريب

    Can I forget while the image of His kind face remains

    In my eyes and the time of departure is near?

  22. أراني إن حاولت نظم قصيدة

    فلي غزل من ذكره ونسيب

    If I tried to compose a poem it diverts me

    To the memory of Him and our relationship

  23. يميل بي التشبيب نحو رثاته

    كما مال طوعاً في القياد جنيب

    My youthful spirit leans to eulogize Him

    As the supple branch bends freely

  24. وتجذبني أغراض وجدي ولوعتي

    إليه وأغراض النفوس ضروب

    The whims of my love and pain pull me

    To Him though whims have different forms

  25. فهل عنده أن الدخيل من الجوى

    مقيم بقلبي ما أقام عسيب

    Does He know that the stranger from passion

    Resides in my heart since he dwelled?

  26. وإن برقت سني لذكر حكاية

    فإن فؤادي ماحييت كئيب

    If my years shine remembering a tale

    My heart remains gloomy as long as I live

  27. ولو أنصفت نعماك ما طعم الكرى

    ولا باشرت لين المهاد جنوب

    If I were fair to Your blessings I would not taste despair

    Nor be intimate with soft pillows

  28. ولولا الحيا من دولة ناصرية

    لما غفرت للنائبات ذنوب

    If not for living in Your victorious state

    I would not forgive sins and wrongdoings

  29. طلعت طلوع الشمس والبدر غائب

    فعفى طلوع ما جناه مغيب

    The sun rose while the moon was absent

    So the rising forgave what the setting committed

  30. وأقبلت الدنيا إليك تنصلاً

    تقبل أذيال الثرى وتتوب

    And life came to You repenting

    Kissing the fringes of the ground, repenting

  31. ولا منكر إن ثاب عازب رأيها

    فقد تعزب الآراء ثم تثوب

    No wonder if an opinion changes

    Opinions can become confused then clear

  32. وما زلت غفاراً لكل جريمة

    تضيق باع الحلم وهو رحيب

    You remain forgiving all crimes

    Though patience is vast it has limits

  33. لك الدهر عبد والملوك رعية

    تعاقب قوماً تارة وتثيب

    For You the days are slaves and kings are subjects

    Replacing a people at times and rewarding at others

  34. وهذا قميص لو سواك أراده

    غدا وهو من ثوب الحياة سليب

    If anyone other than You wanted this shirt

    It would be taken from the cloth of life tomorrow

  35. وقطت بأطراف الرماح مطارف

    عليه وغطت بالسيوف جيوب

    Spear blades have pierced its hems

    And swords have covered its pockets

  36. أبت ذاك من أبناء زريك عصبة

    صباح عدو صحبته عصيب

    That was denied by the tribes of your enemies

    A morning whose companionship is painful

  37. ملوك ترينا السلم والحرب كلما

    تجلى جلوس عندهم وركوب

    Kings who show us peace and war whenever

    Their sitting and riding appear

  38. وأنت سنان في القناة التي هم

    جميعاً أنابيب لها وكعوب

    While You are a spear in the canal where they

    Are all pipes and curves for it

  39. بك التأمت بعد انصداع شعوبهم

    قبائل من آمالهم وشعوب

    The tribes despaired after their peoples' disunity

    And lamented their lost hopes

  40. تحمل أثقال الوزارة عندهم

    أغر بحد الحادثات لعوب

    They bear the burdens of leadership frivolously

    Like children playing with incidents

  41. يرى غائب الأشياء حتى كأنما

    تناجيه من فرط الذكاء غيوب

    The absent one sees things as if

    The unseen spoke to him clearly due to wisdom

  42. يروع قلوباً أو يروق نواظراً

    بوجه كثير البشر وهو مهيب

    Frightening hearts or pleasing sights

    With a face of abundant smiles yet formidable

  43. يلين لنا طوراً ويصلب تارة

    كذاك القنا يهتز وهو صليب

    One moment gentle and another firm

    Like a spear shaking yet upright

  44. نهضت بهذا الأمر نهضة حازم

    يسكن قلب الحزم وهو نهيب

    You took this matter firmly

    Calming the heart of resolve though formidable

  45. وقام بتدبير الزمان وأهله

    خبير بداء المعضلات طبيب

    And managed the times and its people

    An expert in curing puzzles

  46. وسومتها ملمومة ناصرية

    تكف جماح الدهر وهو شبوب

    I have given it the name of victorious Nasiriyah

    Stopping the spread of fate though growing

  47. إذا شجرات الخط فيها تشاجرت

    فليس لريح بينهن هبوب

    When the trees of calligraphy disputed

    No wind comes between them

  48. يليق بك الملك العظيم لأنه

    أخ لك من دون الورى ونسيب

    The great kingdom befits You because it is

    Your brother without compare or relative

  49. تفرعتها من دولة صالحية

    نما في العلى أصل لها وقضيب

    Its branches are from the Salahi state

    A root for it grew lofty and firm

  50. وقد جمعت فيك السيادة كلها

    وغصنك من ماء الشباب رطيب

    You have gathered all sovereignty in yourself

    And your branch is fresh from the water of youth

  51. فما شيمة للمجد إلا وقد غدا

    لها منك حظ وافر ونصيب

    Every aspect of glory has become for it

    From you a large share and portion

  52. سماحة كف لايزال نوالها

    يعلم كف الغيث كيف تصوب

    The generosity of a palm whose bounty

    Knows how the rain cloud aims

  53. وهيبة بأس لو أذمت بنانها

    لشرخ شباب لم يرعه مشيب

    A formidable might whose arrows

    Could split unbroken youth

  54. مددت بساط العدل حتى تصاحبت

    بعدلك شاة في الفلاة وذيب

    You spread the carpet of justice until

    A sheep and wolf in the wilderness accompanied justice

  55. وباشرت أحكام المظالم حسبة

    لك الله فيها بالثواب حسيب

    And carried out the rulings of grievances equitably

    May God reward you for it as the Reckoner

  56. تناهيت في الإنصاف والعدل فانتهت

    عقارب من جور لهن دبيب

    You were extreme in fairness and justice so

    The needles of oppression for them are blunted

  57. وساويت في ميزان عدلك بيننا

    فخاف بريء واستقام مريب

    And you equalized between us in the scale of your justice

    So the innocent became afraid and the sinner corrected

  58. وأوجبت فرض الحج بعد سقوطه

    فأضحى له بعد السقوط وجوب

    You made the duty of Hajj obligatory after it was dropped

    So it became after being dropped a duty

  59. ويسرت قصد البيت من بعد عسرة

    فضاقت بحار بالورى وسهوب

    And facilitated reaching the House after hardship

    So lands and wildernesses became narrow

  60. فللفلك في طامي البحار تحدر

    وللعيس في بحر السراب رسوب

    By your justice the heavens circle the edge of the seas

    And mirages settle in the desert sands

  61. وكان لبيت الله في كل موسم

    عويل على زواره ونحيب

    Every season the House of God

    Had laments for its visitors and weeping

  62. ينادي ملوك الأرض شرقاً ومغرباً

    ألا سامع يدعى به فيجيب

    Calling the kings of the world east and west

    Isn’t there one who is called and responds?

  63. فلما أتت أيامك البيض لانقضت

    وخطبتها للزمان خطوب

    When your white days came they did not pass

    And you proposed marriage to their time

  64. بذلت عن الوفد الحجيج تبرعاً

    مواهب لم يسمح بهن وهوب

    You donated gifts for the pilgrim delegation

    Generosities you were not miserly to grant

  65. سبقت بها أهل العراق وغيرهم

    وأنت إلى كسب الثواب وثوب

    You preceded the people of Iraq and others

    While you earn rewards and dress

  66. تركت بها في الأخشبين نضارة

    وكان بوجه الأخشبين شحوب

    You left vitality in the two Holy Mosques

    Though the face of the Two Holy Mosques was bleak

  67. وحطت به عن ذمة بن فليتة

    وذمة أهل الأبطحين ذنوب

    You relieved the obligation on Bani Falaytah

    And the sins of the people of the Valley

  68. وأبقيتها وقفاً على البر خالصاً

    وفي بر قوم خالص ومشوب

    And made it an endowment for pure good

    Some of the people have pure and impure

  69. إذا جف عود الزرع فهي مريعة

    وإن جف در الضرع فهي حلوب

    If the wood of crops is dry it brings back life

    And if the udder dries it brings back milk

  70. وهنئت عاماً لو أعبر عبارة

    غدا وهو مثلي في علاك خطيب

    You made a year happy, if I could express

    It will come while I am like me in praising you
