إذا قدرت على العلياء بالغلب

فلا تعرج على سعي ولا طلب

If you can overcome the lofty ones by force

Then do not trouble yourself with effort and seeking

واخطب بألسنة الأغماد ا عجزت

عن نيله ألسن الأشعار والخطب

And woo with tongues of scabbards if you are impotent

To attain it with tongues of poetry and sermons

فما استوى الخط والخطي في رهج

ولا الكتائب يوم الروع كالكتب

For the line and the writer are not equal in splendor

Nor are books like battle days full of horror

دع الهوينى وإن أفضت إلى تعب

بك المساعي فإن العز في التعب

Leave pleasure even if the efforts

Make you weep, for glory lies in hardship

ولا ترقن لي إن كربة عرضت

فإن قلبي مخلوق من الكرب

Do not complain to me if a disaster befalls you

For my heart is created from distress

واستخبر الهول كم آنست وحشته

وكم وهبت له روحي ولم أهب

And ask dread how often I made it intimate

And how often I gave it my soul and did not give

ما أسهل الموت عند الناس لو وثقوا

بصدق معتقد أو حسن منقلب

How easy is death to people if they believed

In the truth of creed or beauty of outcome

ومدمن قرع باب اللهو قلت له

والترك للنصح أمر ليس يجمل بي

And to the addict knocking on the door of frivolity, I said

While shunning advice is not seemly in me

هزل الرجال هزال في مروءتها

والجد يخجل أحياناً من اللعب

Men's jesting is frailty in their manhood

While seriousness is sometimes shy of play

فأقبل من الخلق ما ألوك من خلق

على النقيضين من صدق ومن كذب

So accept from people what traits are instilled in them

Of sincerity and lies in the two opposites

ولا تكلف جباناً فوق طاقته

فأكثر الناس مجبول على الرهب

And do not overburden a coward beyond his ability

For most people are created with cowardice

يقني طوال القنا العسال أشجعهم

علماً بأن اقتراب الموت في القرب

The length of the spear convinces me the bravest of them

Knowing that the approach of death is near

والطعن في الكر بعد الفر منقصة

والضرب يقتضب الأعمال بالقضب

To find fault in fate after escape is a disgrace

And to strike prunes deeds with a staff

ألقى الكفيل أبو الغارات كلكله

على الزمان فضاعت حيلة النوب

Al-Kafeel threw his anklets upon the times

So the cunning of the cunning was lost

وداخلت أنفس الأيام هيبته

حتى استرابت نفوس الشك والريب

And his formidable essence entered the souls of the days

Until the souls of doubt and suspicion were astonished

بث الندى والردى زجراً وتكرمة

فكل قلب رهين الرعب والرغب

He sowed dew and calamity, warning and generosity

So every heart was captive to awe and greed

فما لحامل سيف أو مثقفة

سوى التجمل بين الناس من أرب

For neither sword-bearer nor book-holder

Has more than to pretend amongst people out of shame

لما تمرد بهرام وأسرته

جهلاً وراموا قراع النبع بالغرب

When Bahram rebelled foolishly

And sought to uproot the spring with autumn

صدعت بالناصر المحيي زجاجتهم

وللزجاجة صدع غير منشعب

I cracked his flask with Al-Nasser the Reviver

And the cracking of a flask has no branches

أسرى إليهم ولو أسرى إلى الفل

ك الأعلى لخافت قلوب الأنجم الشهب

I marched against them, and had I marched against

The highest heaven, the hearts of the stars would have burned

في ليلة قدحت زرق النصال بها

ناراً تشب بأطراف القنا الأشب

In a night in which I ignited the blue gleam of swords

A fire blazing at the edges of the long spears

ظنوا الشجاعة تنجيهم فقارعهم

أبو شجاع قريع المجد والحسب

They thought courage would save them, so I opposed them

Abu Shujaa', reaper of glory and lineage

سقوا بأسكر سُكرٍ لا انقضاء له

من قهوة الموت لا من قهوة العنب

They drank an endless intoxication

From the coffee of death, not from the coffee of grapes

وخانهم فأل حلوان فواقعهم

ضرب مواقعه أحلى من الضرب

And the auspicious Al-Fal betrayed them, so I assailed them

A blow sweeter than strikes

حل الردى بينهم بالحي فانقرضوا

وما حلول الردى بالحي من عجب

Evil befell them through the living one, so they were eradicated

And the befalling of evil through the living is not strange

لم يجهلوا قبح مسعاهم وخيبتهم

وأي عبد عصى المولى فلم يخب

They were not ignorant of the ugliness of their endeavor and their failure

For which slave disobeys his Master and does not go bankrupt?

وإنما سولت للقوم أنفسهم

أن يقطعوا سبب النعمى بلا سبب

Rather, their souls enticed them

To sever the path of blessing for no cause

فك النفاق عن النعماء أيديهم

من بعد ما نشبت في عروة النشب

So the hypocrisy of blessings stripped their hands

After it had grown on the peg of the peg

ألم تر القوم لما أن طغوا وبغوا

واستحقبوا الذم ما عاشوا على الحقب

Have you not seen-when the people rebelled and wronged

And deserved blame, they did not live rightfully for epochs

لم يقبل الجانب القبلي أوجههم

فرد أولهم بدءاً على العقب

The near side did not accept their faces

So He returned the first of them backwards on their heels

وأنكروا من ظهور الخيل ما عرفوا

واستوثبوها فخانتهم ولم تثب

And they denied from the chargers' backs what they had known

And were thrown, so the chargers betrayed them and did not stand firm

لولا الأسار ومن لا يمن به

ما عفَّ عنهم ذباب السيف ذو الشطب

Were it not for the captives, and whoever does not

Believe in Him, the flies of the double-edged sword would not have pardoned them

تسنموا إبلاً تتلو قلائصهم

يا عزة السرج ذوقي ذلة القتب

They mounted camels following their stumbling

O honor of saddles! Taste the disgrace of fetters

كأنهم فوقها خُشب مسندة

إن النفاق لمنسوب إلى الخشب

As if they atop them were pillars placed

Indeed, hypocrisy is attributed to wood

لله عزمة محي الدين كم تركت

بتربة الحي من خد امرئ ترب

By God, Al-Muhayyi has resolve-how many pure-faced

You left in the land of the living from young and old

سما إليهم سمو البدر تصحبه

كواكب من سحاب النقع في حجب

He appointed to them the ascension of the full moon accompanied

By planets from the clouds' accumulation in veils

في فتية من بني رزيك تحسبهم

عن جانبيه رحى دارت على قطب

In youths from the Banu Rizik whom you would reckon

On either flank a spinning mill upon a pole

قوم إذا الحرب قامت سوقها جلبوا

من النفوس إليها أنفس الجلب

A people, when war established its market, they bring

From the souls to it the very souls of mountains

المسرعون من المران أرشية

نابت قلوب أعاديها عن القلب

The swift from training, leaders

Whose enemies' hearts are detached from hearts

الطاعنون الأعادي كل مزبدة

كأنها كأس خمر جاش بالحبب

The slayers of enemies-every surge

Is like a cup of wine frothing with seeds

تروى الرماح الظوامي من مجاجتها

فتنثني وعليها نشوة الطرب

The lances suckle the shining points from their mingling

So they waver, intoxicated with rapture

كأن أيمانهم سلت عزائمهم

من الجفون على الهامات واليلب

As if their oaths drew their resolves

From their eyelids upon the foreheads and hearts

كأن لمع المواضي في أكفهم

صواعق في الوغى تنقض من سحب

As if the gleam of the flashes in their palms

Were lightning in the fray, swooping from clouds

فما تروح بها الأرواح في صعد

إلا وتغدو بها الأجسام في صبب

So the souls in the cliffs swoop with them

And the bodies in the morning swoop with them in drizzle

رقاهم رتبة العليا أخو همم

لم يأخذ الملك بالتدريج في الرتب

The rank of supremacy raised them-a brother of resolves

Who did not gradually take the kingdom by degrees

تلقب الصالح الهادي وليس به

مع صدق أفعاله فقر إلى اللقب

Al-Salih the Guider is titled, but with

The sincerity of his deeds, has no poverty for a title

متوج من بني زريك تنسبه

بيض المساعي إلى جرثومة العرب

Crowned from the Banu Zurayk, his efforts ascribe him to

The progeny of Arabs of pure efforts

زاكي الأرومة إلا أن منصبه

في المجد أعظم أن يعزى إلى نسب

Zakiy of lineage, except that his position

In glory is too great to be attributed to lineage

ما أليق التاج معصوباً بمفرقه

ورب معتصب بالتاج مغتصب

How unfit is the crown wrapped around his temples!

And many a usurper is crowned by force

جذلان يخلف من بادي خواطره

ما شاء من فائض الإعطاء والعطب

He leaves behind from his inner thoughts

Whatever he wills of overflowing grace and bestowal

يقري ذنوب الرعايا عفو مغتفر

لا يبلغ الكرب منه عقدة الكرب

He overlooks his subjects' sins with a pardoning forgiveness

Anxiety cannot form a knot from him

أرضته عن هفوات الناس قدرته

فما يكدر صفو الحلم بالغضب

His power pleased him about people's lapses

So the calm of forbearance is not clouded with anger

وصامت أعربت عنه زماجره

بناطق من صهيل الخيل مصطخب

His silent coursers expressed his warnings

With an articulate one's neighing, restless

كالسيل والليل لا ينجو طريدهما

من المنية في الإمعان بالهرب

Like a torrent and night from both no prey escapes

Death in fleeing with exertion

يرميه أروع من غسان منذ رمى

بعزمه نوب الأيام لم تنب

He shoots them more terrifying than Ghassan when he shot

With his determination the bends of time that did not swerve

أعز يضرب جوني القتام له

رواق عز أكيد غير مضطرب

Honoring Junayd's darkness with a arcade of sure honor

Neither wavering nor propped up with tent pegs

بيت من المجد لم يمدد له عمد

سوى الوشيج ولم يشدد إلى طنب

A house of glory stretched out for him

With no pillars but honor, and no propping with stakes

أغر أبلح وضاح تخر له

صيد الملوك على الأذقان والركب

Dazzling white and bright, beneath him

The prey of kings bows upon forelocks and knees

يظنه الطرف فوق الطرف طود علا

تسمو إليه عيون الجحفل اللجب

The glance assumes him above the glance a towering mountain

To which the eyes of the shaggy scorpions ascend

تجر بين يديه من سوابقه

قب ترقرق منها الحسن في أهب

His preceders drag before him some whose brightness flows

In their slender waists over the imagination

من كل أجرد مسكي الأديم له

صبغ إذا شاب رأس الليل لم يشب

For each bare and smooth soft-skinned one he owns

A dye which, when it adorns the night's head, does not grey

وأحمر شفقي اللون متقد

بحدة الشوط لا بالسوط ملتهب

And red of twilight hue, ignited

By the speed of galloping, not by whips aflame

قد أدبتها سجاياه وكثرة ما

رأت وماسمعت عنه من الأدب

His nature and plenty they have witnessed disciplined them

So what clouds the calm of forbearance with anger?

مسومات عراب لم تزل أبداً

تكسى وتحلى بما بزت من السلب

Tamed Arab steeds that never

Cease to be clad and adorned in what they have looted

ترى لكل هلال من مراكبها

خيط المجرة مجروراً على اللقب

You see for each new moon of his ships

The galaxy dragged along the banner

تحمل الوشي منها كل ذي شة

يغني بها عن عقود الدر والذهب

Bearing the coveted booty of him

Sufficient without necklaces of pearls and gold

هي العتاد لمن يرمي محاربه

في كل معترك بالويل والحرب

This is the gear of one who targets his opponent

In every fray with woe and war

جرد إذا جردتها كف عزمته

للغزو هزت عذاب السوط في العذب

When you bare them, your resolved palm

For invasion shakes the horrors of the whip in sweet water

تثير نقع دخان تحته لهب

إن الدخان لنمام على اللهب

They stir the patches of smoke beneath which is flame

The smoke is a talebearer about the flame

يحكي مجر عواليها إذا رحلت

عن منزل مسحب الحيات في الكثب

Their track relates, when they depart

From a halted place of serpents creeping in hiding

خيل ترى العمر مسلوباً إذا نهشت

صدر الأعادي بحيات القنا السلب

Horses that see life stripped

When their chests shred the enemies' with serpent-like striking

لا يثقل الروع إلا أن يخف بها

داعي النزال عن التقريب والخبب

Nothing weighs down alarm but that it subsides through them

The caller to war from approaching and uniting

لانت صفاة عدو أنت قارعها

فاصلب على ملة الأوثان والصلب

You slew a hostile foe assailing them

So be steadfast on the religion of idols and crucifixion

فعندك الضمر الجرد التي عرفوا

وفوقهن أسود الغاب لم تغب

In you is the brave soul which they knew

And above them the lions of the forest that did not disappear

تزورهم شزب منها إذا ظمئت

لم ترو إلا برقراق الدم السرب

They visit them a morning draught, and when it thirsts

It does not drink except the red runnels of blood

وما تخط على دين الهدى أبداً

وأنت أشفق ن أم بهم وأب

It never transgresses the religion of guidance

While you are more compassionate to them than a mother and father

فاسعد بأيامك الحسنى التي قسمت

بين الحميدين من ماض ومرتقب

So be joyous in your beautiful days which you apportioned

Between the two praiseworthys, past and hoped for

إذا تهنت بك الأيام قاطبة

فما الهناء بمقصور على رجب

If the days incline to you in their entirety

Then joy is not confined to Rajab
