1. في مثل مدحك شرح القول مختصر

    وفي طوال القوافي عنده قصر

    In praising you, brevity in speech is best

    And in long verse meters, there is inadequacy

  2. حسنت ذكر القوافي إذ مدحت بها

    وما على كل جيد تحسن الدور

    You did well in mentioning the meters when you praised with them

    And not all excellence is suited for repetition

  3. وما مدحك لكني مدحت بك ال

    شعر الذي بك يستعلي ويفتخر

    It was not you I praised, but I praised through you

    Poetry, which through you is exalted and proud

  4. سما بك الدست لما نلت منزلة

    أجل مجدك فيها القدر والقدر

    It reached, through you, a high rank

    When your glorious worth and value were attained

  5. وبوأتك المواضي والقنا رتبا

    أضعافها من ضمان الغيب منتظر

    You gave it abodes and gardens and steps

    Beyond them - from the unseen - hopes await

  6. أنت الذي يعقد الإسلام خنصره

    علية إن حل خطب أوطرا وطر

    You are the one round whom Islam knots its girdle

    Sublime, whether good or ill befalls

  7. ما زال وجه المعالي الغر ملتفتا

    شوقا إليك وعين المجد تنتظر

    The face of glory continues to turn

    Yearning for you, and the eye of glory awaits

  8. تجملت بك أيام ذخرت لها

    إن النفيس من الأشياء يدخر

    It adorned itself with days it stored for it

    For the precious of things is hoarded

  9. كان الزمان بهيم اللون فاتضحت

    له بأيامك الأوضاح والغرر

    Time was dull in color, but in your days

    It shone, elucidated, with moons and stars

  10. مراتب الملك أجسام أبوك لها ال

    روح اللطيف وأنت السمع والبصر

    The ranks of kingship are your father’s bodies

    While you are their subtle spirit, hearing and sight

  11. إن كان ليث الشرى العادي فإنك يا

    ذخر الأئمة منه الناب والظفر

    If the fierce lion of conflict is your father

    Then you, treasure of the imams, are its fang and claw

  12. أو كان دوحة مجد طاب منبتها ال

    زاكي فأنت لها الأوراق والثمر

    Or if the palm tree of glory was well-rooted

    You are its flourishing leaves and fruit

  13. أعلمتنا حين لم تخلل بسيرته

    أن الأصول عليها تنبت الشجر

    You taught us, since you did not mix into its course

    That roots beget the trees that rise

  14. لما ترفع قدرا واستطال على

    عن أن يباشره للهيبة البشر

    When its worth was raised and it grew beyond

    The ability of men to deal with - in awe -

  15. ألقى إليك مقاليد العلى ثقة

    بنهضة أحكمت من أمرها المرر

    He cast to you the keys of sublimity, trusting

    In the firmness of your rulings and judgments

  16. وفوض الأمر ترفيها لهمته

    إلى خبير بما يأتي وما يذر

    And he relegated the matter - easing his burden -

    To an expert in what comes and what remains

  17. غض الشبيبة كهل الرأي مقتبل ال

    أيام لا صغر يزري ولا كبر

    A youth mature in wisdom, meeting days

    Neither too young, nor advanced in years

  18. كأن أخلاقه من حسن خلقته

    صيغت فقد راقت الأفعال والصور

    It is as if his manners, from his excellent nature

    Were molded - thus his deeds and forms please

  19. قامت بعزمة محيي الدين مملكة

    صفا بوالده فيها له كدر

    Through the resolve of Muhyi al-Din, the kingdom rose

    Unmixed, through his father, of bitterness for him

  20. متوج تشرق الدنيا بطلعته

    وتخجل الشمس مهما لاح والقمر

    Crowned - the world shining at his rising

    The sun and moon ashamed when he appears and shines

  21. إذا أقامت على ثغر صوارمه

    فللنوائب عن سكانها سفر

    If swords stay at the edges of his frontiers

    Adversaries must leave his lands and flee

  22. أغاث أعمال بلبيس وأمنها

    من بعد ما عالها الإشفاق والحذر

    He charged with his army at Bilbays and secured it

    After dire caution and apprehension afflicted it

  23. وليس يعلو لمن رام العلى خطر

    إن لم يهن عنده التغرير والخطر

    And it is no grave danger when the lofty aspire

    If guile and jeopardy do not make them weak

  24. أغرت قبل أبي الغارات مقتحماً

    للهول تستصغر الجلى وتحتقر

    Before, raids made me attack recklessly

    Scorning calamity - great and small

  25. فكان شمساً وكنت الفجر تقدمها

    والفجر في الجو قبل الشمس ينتشر

    You were the sun, and I the dawn preceding it

    And dawn, in the sky, appears before the sun

  26. بعزمة الناصر بن الصالح انكشف

    الأعداء عن حوزة الإسلام وانذعروا

    With the resolve of an-Nasir ibn as-Salih, the enemies

    Fled the Abode of Islam, and scattered in defeat

  27. لجت به الغارة الشعواء خلفهم

    والنصر يقسم لا فاتوه والظفر

    Their arrogant raid pursued them from behind

    And victory allotted them naught but rout

  28. فأمعنوا هرباً منه ومنذ علموا

    بأنه نافر في إثرهم نفروا

    So they fled hard from him, and since they knew

    He marched against them, they scattered away

  29. وحين أبليت عذراً في اللحاق بهم

    وصح منك السرى في الليل والسهر

    And when you excused hanging back from them

    And the secret dawn raid was proven by you

  30. وقال عزمك لما أن ألح ولم

    تلح له منهم عين ولا أثر

    And your resolve said, when insistence waned

    And no trace of them for you remained

  31. إن تنج منها أبا عمرو فعن قدر

    نجاؤكم قدرة قد عاقها القدر

    "If Abu ‘Amr escapes from it, then your

    Escape was a destiny that destiny prevented"

  32. وعدت نحو مقر العز في عصب

    يفنى بها الأكثران الرمل والمطر

    You returned to the abode of might with a band

    Which would destroy mountains and rain

  33. وللصوارم في أجفانها أسف

    تكاد من حره الأجفان تستعر

    And the swords, in their sheaths, grieve

    Almost set ablaze by their fervor

  34. جيش إذا انضم قطراه رأيت على

    أرجائه شجرات الخط تشتجر

    An army - when its lines are ordered

    You see upon its flanks swords budding

  35. شاموا حياً ومحيا منك بينهما

    سحائب البشر والإنعام تنهمر

    They lived and were given life through you among them

    Clouds of men and gifts raining

  36. أرضيت عسكر مصر بالنوال ولم

    يزل رضى الناس باب قرعه عسر

    You pleased the army of Egypt with spoils and still

    The people's pleasure at your door was rare

  37. فاشكر يداً أصبحوا شكراً لمنتها

    على ولائك إن غابوا وإن حضروا

    So thank the hand whose benefits make them

    Thankful for your allegiance, present and absent

  38. وسعتهم بالندى والحلم قاطبة

    فالرزق متسع والذنب مغتفر

    It embraced them in dew and forbearance, all

    Sustenance is plenty and sins pardoned

  39. والجود إن تكشف الأيام صفحتها

    سترته باذل الإحسان يستتر

    And if days reveal the page of generosity

    The benefactor hides in beneficence and veils

  40. تنزه الخلق المجدي عن عجل

    يقضي به المزعجان الطيش والضجر

    Rightful glory is far from hasty deeds

    Which the rash and vexed decree

  41. وصان مقداره العالي وقدرته

    من أن يضاف إليه الشر والأشر

    And his lofty status and power were distanced

    From evil and harm being ascribed to them

  42. وأصبحت عنده الأيام نازلة

    في رحب صدر إليه الورد والصدر

    And through him days have descended

    Into the open plain - for it, roses and breasts

  43. تفيض رحمته تغيض نقمته

    والبحر تطفأ في تياره الشرر

    His mercy overflows, his wrath subsides

    And the sea, its sparks quenched in its current

  44. ملك إذا رسمت مرآه نائله

    تهلل البدر وانهلت له البدر

    A king - if his mirror attains his wants

    The full moon rejoices and moons crescent for him

  45. ما إن سموت على جرد مسومة

    إلا وظن أناس أنها سرر

    No sooner do you mount well-bred horses

    Than some people think they are thrones

  46. ولا حملت نجاد السيد في رهج

    إلا بدا ذكر يسطو به ذكر

    Nor bear the good tidings of the master, rejoicing

    Except that it makes the recollection joyous in recollection

  47. ولا اعتقلت وشيج الخط يوم وغى

    إلا تمنت ثغور أنها ثغر

    Nor restrain the dashing script on a day of battle

    Except that frontiers wish they were battlefields

  48. ولا علت يدك العليا على قلم

    إلا جرى الرزق منه أو دم هدر

    Nor raise your supreme hand above a pen

    Except that provision flows from it or poured blood

  49. ولا سطرت على طرس مكاتبة

    إلا بدت غرر من فوقها طرر

    Nor trace compositions on a sheet

    Except that above it stars shine

  50. ولا نطقت ونادي الجمع منتظم

    إلا وظلت عقود الدر تنتثر

    Nor speak, and the group’s knots are arrayed

    Except that strands of pearls are scattered about

  51. أيقنت منذ أرحت المجد من تعب

    أن سوف تتعب من أوصافك الفكر

    I was certain, when glory was relieved of fatigue

    That thought would weary describing you

  52. فاجعل قبولك ما أهديت من خدم

    أسنى ثوابٍ له الآمال تنتظر

    So make your acceptance what I gifted in service

    The fairest reward - for it hopes await

  53. وليس ذا لغنى بي عن ندى ملك

    أغنى الملوك إلى نعماه مفتقر

    And I have no lack of need for the dew of a king

    Though the richest king, needing his bounty

  54. ولكن لساني وإن طالت بلاغته

    مقصر عن أداء الفضل بل حصر

    But my tongue, though eloquent, falls short

    Of fulfilling the merit - nay, it is too weak

  55. في شكر نعمتك الأولى التي سلفت

    شغل فكيف إذا انضافت لها أخر

    In thanking you for your first bounty you gave

    Which busied me - what then when more is added?

  56. إن رمت مدحاً على مقدار ما بلغت

    بك المعالي فإني لست أقتدر

    If Iaim a eulogy at your eminence attained

    I cannot achieve a proportionate endeavor

  57. إني وإن قصر الساعون عن أمدي

    إليك من خجل التقصير أعتذر

    Though I fall short, despite my efforts to reach

    You, I make excuses, ashamed of falling short

  58. فاصفح وسامح وعد واعطف ولن وأقل

    واسمح فأنت على ما شئت مقتدر

    So forgive, pardon, promise, bestow, be kind

    Command, pardon - for you are capable over what you will
