راخ لها في حلق البرين
واشدد عليها حلق الوضين
She wanders lost in the desert's throat
And circles the valley's winding bend
ورام بها كل نوى شطون
تجمع بين السهل والحزون
Every purpose turns its aim on her
Combining ease and unease within
نافرة من أنس القطين
تحسبها بين الصوى والبين
Repelled by the company of nomads
Thinking her lost between plains and dunes
خالطها مس من الجنون
ما طمثت بالفحل والجنين
Touched by a hint of madness
Never sired a colt or fetus
ولا درت ما رقة الحنين
كأنها ما سمعت أنيني
Nor knew the tenderness of yearning
As if she never heard my laments
على فراق الثغب المعين
من كنز عمري وثرى يميني
For the loss of my treasure and gift of fate
And death more craved than disgrace's stay
والموت أشهى من مقام الهون
ومن سؤال باخل منون
And asking the stingy miser
My praise of him harsher than my blame
مدحي له أشد من منوني
عاملته وليس من زبوني
I served him though not my customer
He rewarded me with the deal of the cheated
فردني بصفقة المغبون
يا ذل أبكاري وذل عوني
Oh my virginity’s humiliation and my supporter's aid
If I accept the refusal and miserly share
إن رضيت بالمنع والماعون
من صاحب يبخل بالتأمين
From a friend who's miserly with insurance
When I call on God, he does not avail me
إذا دعوت الله لا يغنيني
حرصاً على سجية الضنين
Keen to keep the disposition of the hoarder
His manners fickle with color
أخلاقه كثيرة التلوين
ونفسه بوعدها تلويني
And his soul by its promise colors me
But the opinion of the noble knight
أما ورأي فارس معين
فرب طود شامخ حصين
Many a towering, fortified mountain
Lofty, unequaled in rank
سامي العلى منقطع القرين
ليث له الخطي كالعرين
A lion whose claws are like a cave
Relentless fate recoils from him
يفتر عنه ناجذ المنون
إذا استدارت برحى طحون
When the mill of fate revolts
Striking the surface with the interior
قد ضرب الظهور بالبطون
كأنه ينطق عن كمين
As if it speaks from an unseen corner
Of wisdom and discourse, honest and sound
من الصواب والحجى الرصين
لو قال للخطوب لا تكوني
If it said to calamities, do not be
They would cease in stillness
لاذت من الحراك بالسكون
ولم تطر جاثمة الوكون
And the closed universe would unravel
The knot of guarded pearl would untie
وانحل عقد الزرد المصون
وذاب منه جامد الجفون
And its frozen eyelid would melt
O glory of the world and sword of the faith
يا ماجد الدنيا وسيف الدين
ومستخف الراجح الرزين
Underestimating the weighty and solemn
In my standing, severity and softness
عند مقامي شدة ولين
لو لم تكن باللؤلؤ المكنون
Had you not been the hidden pearl
Of experience, I'd not have locked my vows
ذا خبرة ما غلقت رهوني
في عرض هذا الجوهر الثمين
To this precious essence, worthy of praise
Pour from praise what pours me out
على خليق بالثنا قمين
صب من الحمد بما يصبيني
Still in an incident that bares me
Standing in the breast of time, shielding me
مازال في حادثة تعروني
يقوم في صدر الزمان دوني
A shining forehead and smooth brow
His left in generosity as his right
أبلج طلق الوجه والجبين
شماله في الجود كاليمين
A chain of nobility and faith
Not a chain of clay like some men
سلساله من كرم ودين
لا كامرئ سلساله من طين
I deemed touching the bent twig
So I said to hopes, you will not avail me
قدرت لمس الوابل الهتون
فقلت للآمال لن تميني
If I shook his hand with mine
When his bounty doubted my suspicions
إن صافحت يمينه يميني
إذا عرت معروفه ظنوني
He cast on it the snow of certainty
How much he protected the honored manners
ألقى عليها ثلج اليقين
كم صان وجه الأدب المصون
Gives from what is not coveted
And how many debts he has with me
يبذل مما ليس بالمنون
وكم له عندي من الديون
Yet I fulfill the duty with the accustomed
And I delight in your holidays, whenever
لكن أؤدي الفرض بالمسنون
وأسعد بأعيادك كل حين
The delegation of the faithful land persists
Covered in dusty heads and unkempt
مادام وفد البلد الأمين
معتلجاً بأبطح الحجون
من أشعث الرأس ومن دهين
