أعندك أن وجدي واكتئابي

تراجع مذ رجعت إلى اجتنابي

Do you think my love and melancholy

Have retreated since I started avoiding you?

وأن الهجر أحدث لي سلواً

يسكن برده حر التهابي

That separation has brought me solace

Whose cold soothes the heat of my inflammation?

وأن الأربعين إذ توالت

بريعان الصبا قبح التصابي

That when I reached forty,

The springtime of youth turned ugly in rivalry?

ولو لم ينهني شيب نهاني

صباح الشيب في ليل الشباب

Had the whiteness of old age not prevented me

The dawn of old age in the night of youth

وأيام لها في كل وقت

جنايات تجل عن العتاب

And days that in every moment

Have sins too grave for reproach

أقضيها وتحسب من حياتي

وقد أنفقتهن بلا حساب

I spend them and they count from my life

Though I’ve wasted them without heed

تفيض همومها والسيل يطمر

إذا رفدته أفواه الثغاب

Their worries pour and the torrent buries

When the rains of spring feed it

إذا أصلحتها فسدت كأني

أهيب بها إلى نغل الإهاب

If I fix them, they spoil, as if I

Call them to the palms of ruin

أوابد لاتزال العون منها

تواصلني بأيدة كعاب

Lands that never cease to help

Join me with hands like paws

كأن الدهر يفرح أن يراني

على طول المدى قلق الركاب

As if fate rejoices to see me

Restless throughout the journey

كأن الدهر يفرح ألا يرضيه إلا

إراقة ماء وجهي في الطلاب

As if fate only rejoices when

My face pours tears searching for water

وكيف يهون ذلك عند نفس

تخاف العار من منن السحاب

And how can that be easy for a soul

That fears disgrace from the clouds' favor?

وكم حر يعد الصاب شهدا

فيعذب عنده طعم العذاب

How much heat considers cold honey

So it pains with the taste of torment?

وقد حالت بنو رزيك بيني

وبين الدهر بالمنن الرغاب

The clan of Ruzayq came between me

And fate with pleasing, acceptable favors

تركت الاغتراب وكنت قدماً

أحن إلى ركوب الاغتراب

I left estrangement though I had been

Yearning to embark on estrangement

وزرت أغر من غسان يسلي

غريب الدار عن ذكر الإياب

I visited more special than Ghassan

A stranger in an abode of no return

ولولا الصالح انتاش القوافي

لكان الفضل مجتنب الجناب

Were it not for the righteous restoration of rhymes

Virtue had been to avoid meter

وكنت وقد تخيره رجائي

كمن هجر السراب إلى الشراب

I was one who abandoned mirage for water

And my choice did not flutter or fail

ولم يخفق بحمد الله سعيي

إلى مصر ولا خاب انتخابي

Thanks be to God, my effort never

Faltered toward Egypt or chose wrong

ولكن زرت أبلج يقتضيه

نداه عمارة الأمل الخراب

But I visited Ablaj's called

Whose ruin the hope of glory rebuilt

أزال حجابه عني وعيني

تراه من الجلالة في حجاب

He removed his veil and my eyes

Saw him veiled in majesty

وقربني تفضله ولكن

بعدت مهابة عند اقترابي

His kindness brought me near but

Awe kept me distant when approaching

وعلمني اقتضاب المدح فيه

مكارم دائمات الاقتضاب

He taught me concise praise for him

Perpetual generosities concise

تزيد مثوبة وأزيد شكراً

وذلك دابها أبداً ودابي

More rewarding and more thanked

Such is his custom and mine

قسمت مشاع مجدك وهو جم

على ضربين من ضرب وصاب

I divided the shared glories of your glory

In two sorts of sort and pour

فنصف في جفون مهندات

ونصف في جفان كالجواب

So half in blinking eyelids

And half in lids like answers

وحين سموت قدراً أن تسامى

وعز الناس قدرك في الخطاب

When you decided to rise high

And people treasured your worth in discourse

أقمت الناصر المحيي فأحيى

رسوماً كن بالرسم اليباب

You established the victorious reviver, and revived

Ways that had been in ruin

وبث العدل في الدنيا فأضحى

قطيع الشاء يأنس بالذئاب

And spread justice in the world, so it became

A flock of sheep friendly with wolves

وأنت شهاب حق وهو منه

بمنزلة الضياء من الشهاب

You are a true celestial flame and he is to it

Like the glow is to the flame

سعى مسعاك في كرم وبأس

وشب على خلائقك العذاب

His efforts in generosity and warfollowed yours

And he was raised on your noble qualities

فأصبح معلم الطرفين لما

حوى شرف انتساب واكتساب

So he became the exemplar of both creeds when

He contained the honor of ancestry and merit

وصنت الملك من عزمات بدر

بميمون النقيبة والركاب

And protected the kingdom from resolute badrs

With the auspicious early dawn and the riders

بأروع لم يزل في كل ثغر

زعيم القب مضروب القباب

The best that in every border

The chief of the tribe, the domed encampment

مخوف البأس في حرب وسلم

وحد السيف يخشى في القراب

Feared in war and peace, unique in the sword

Whose sharpness is feared even sheathed

إذا دعي المظفر نحو خطب

فما للخطب من ظفر وناب

If summoned to glorious endeavors

No glory or help but his betides

وإن قدحت يداه نار حرب

فزند النصر زند غير كاب

And if his hands sparked the fire of war

Victory sparked a spark not dying

حسام الناصر الماضي إذا ما

نبت بيض السيوف عن الضراب

The sword of the deceased victor, whenever

The whites of swords rose from their scabbards

وهضبة عزه والطود ينأى

عليك صعوده بين الهضاب

And the plateau of his might and glory that spurns

Your climbing its summit between the plateaus

ألم تر آل رزيك أعادوا

وجوه المجد سافرة النقاب

Have you not seen the house of Ruzayq restore

The faces of glory unveiled?

ملوك أصبحوا سلماً وحرباً

غيوث مخيلة وليوث غاب

Kings they became, in peace and war,

Succors of refuge and lions of thickets

علوا باالصالح الهادي على من

مشى في عصرهم فوق التراب

They rose with the righteous guiding one over those

Who walked in their time on the earth

سموا بأغر تفرده المعالي

وإن شركوه في النسب القراب

They ascended with the most singular

Though kin shared ancestry and tie

أسف جناح نعمته عليهم

وحلق مجده فوق الثقاب

The wing of his favor spread over them

And his glory soared over high aims

كفيل أئمة أثنى عليهم

كلام الله في آي الكتاب

Guardian of imams the Quran praises

In its clear verses and ayahs

أجاب نداءهم لما دعوه

وقد خرس الكفاة عن الجواب

He answered their call when the mute failed response

And their order grew firm after confusion

وحاط ذرى الشريعة فاستقرت

قواعد أمرها بعد اضطراب

His tongue was sharp yet he sheathed it from them

So their meadow became the buzzing of flies

وذب لسانه وظباه عنها

فأصبح روضها غرد الذباب

A fighter each day or disputant

He counts them for sermons or speeches

جلاد كل يوم أو جدال

يعدهما لخطب أو خطاب

He consulted noble, patient resolve

In the struggle, and wisely accountable

وشاور في الجهاد شريف عرض

أشار بحسن صبر واحتساب

He implemented his rule though fate declined

And fulfilled his decree though the sword rebelled

فأنفذ حكمه والدهر آب

وأمضى عزمه والسيف ناب

He persisted in pounding the door of might until

Opening every door was the conquest

وأدمن قرع باب العز حتى

غدا والفتح يفتح كل باب

And sent them as lancers

Pouring from ponds onto the watering places

وأرسلها مسومة عراباً

تفيض من الوهاد على الروابي

Showing you the land as a sea of iron

Great of wave, tumultuous of foam

تريك البر بحراً من حديد

عظيم الموج مصطخب العباب

If battalions marched in night darkness

They marched with stars blue like armor

كتائب إن سرت في ليل نقع

سرت ونجومها زرق الحراب

When the war fire was lit, they were only

Shadows of eagles or eagles

إن وقد الهجير فليس إلا

ظلال من عقاب أو عقاب

With them he humbled the kings of idols, a king

Who vanquishes the hardy Nubians

أذل بها ملوك الشرك ملك

يذلل شامس النوب الصعاب

Fearsome of might, abundant in gifts

Full of reward and punishment

مهيب البأس فياض العطايا

مليء بالثواب وبالعقاب

You see the angels before him images

Of awe, heads bowed in reverence

ترى الأملاك بني يديه صوراً

من الإشفاق خاضعة الرقاب

When the forearms tire of drawing swords

The glory of the wise king appears

إذا ما افتر يغر الدست عنه

بدت لك عزة الملك اللباب

I leaned toward staying in their precincts

And leaned toward nothing but right

جنحت إلى الإقامة في ذراه

ولم أجنح إلى غير الصواب

The Euphrates' water is no haven for me

Nor the folds of Tigris any peace

فلا ماء الفرات بمورد لي

ولا أكناف دجلة من رحابي

And when I found no requital for you

But fair thanks and praise

ولما لم أجد عندي جزاء

لكم غير الثناء المستطاب

I redeemed the jewels of words for you

With raised prayers sure to be answered

شفعت جواهر الألفاظ فيكم

بمرفوع الدعاء المستجاب
