فدى لبني رزيك قوم رفعتهم

بمدحي ولما يرفعوا للثنا قدرا

I redeem my people whom I raised

Through my praise, though they raised no glory for reward

لقد زهدتني في رجال صلاتكم

ومن شام نور الشمس لم يحمد الفجرا

Indeed, your prayers made me disdain men

As the light of sun from Syria was never praised at dawn

بعثت بطرف يسبق الطرف غفوة

وتغدو الرياح الهوج من خلفه حسرا

I sent a glance faster than a drowsy glance

And the blowing winds regretted trailing it

حكى الورد والياقوت حسناً وحمرة

وتاه فلم يرض العقيق ولا الخمرا

The rose and ruby told of beauty and redness

Yet the carnelian was not pleased, nor was wine

وأرسلته في الحسن وتراً كأنني

أطالب عند النائبات به وترا

I sent him in beauty a string as though

I seek from deputies that string as a debt

نذرت ركوب البرق عند وصوله

فوفيت لما جاءني ذلك النذرا

I vowed to cease riding lightning when he arrives

I fulfilled that vow when it came to me

وقفت القوافي في علاك عرائساً

فساق لها الإحسان في مهرها مهرا

The rhymes stood still for you as brides

So favour led them in their dowry a dowry
