أصبت في خير أعضائي وأعضادي
وخير أهلي إذا عدوا وأولادي
I have been blessed in the best of my organs and limbs
And the best of my family when they are counted, and my children
بأبلج الوجه من سعد العشيرة لم
يعرف بغير الندى والبشر في النادي
With a face shining from the joy of kinship, he did not
Know anything but dew and good news in the club
إن أظلم الجو في عيني فقد فجعت
بكوكب في سماء المجد أوقد
If the weather is dark in my eyes, I have been saddened
By a star in the sky of glory that ignited
كالمشرفي ولكن غير منثلم
والسمهري ولكن غير منآد
Like Al-Musharrafī, but not blemished
And Al-Samhari, but not flattering
ناش على شيمتي مجد ومكرمة
ماش على سنتي هدي وإرشادي
Glory and honor grew on my character
Guidance and advice grew on my tongue
قد كان يسند عني ثم ساد إلى
أن صار من فضله نقلي وإسنادي
He used to support me, then he led
Until by his virtue became my transport and support
من آل أحمد بل زيدان في نسب
مقابل بين أمجاد وأنجاد
From the family of Ahmad, rather more noble in lineage
A match between glories and palms
قوم يسرك في يوم الكريهة أن
تلقى ألوف الورى منهم بآحاد
A people whose company delights you on the day of horror
To meet thousands of people from them in ones
تعلو الوهاد على الأطواد إن دفنوا
فيها وتسمو سمو المشرف البادي
The hills rise above the dunes if they are buried
In them and ascend as high as the appearing hill
ومن نباهتهم والأرض خاملة
أزرت نابهة أوهاد بأطواد
And from their brilliance while the land is dormant
A brilliant hill rose over dunes
بكل أرض ثوى قبر يضم على
فراج معضلة طلاع أنجاد
In every land lies a grave containing
The solution to intricate riddles of noble palms
قبر تسجى بأكناف العداية لم
تؤنسه أجداث آباء وأجداد
A grave watered on its sides by adversity, not
Cheered by ancestors and forefathers
وفي الحصيب لعبد الله مدرجة
بالعرق تسقى بصوب الرائح الغادي
And in Al-Husaib lies the slope of Abdullah
Watered by sweat in the direction the wind blows
وفي القرافة ثاو لا تزال له
نار على قدر إطفائي وإيقادي
And in Al-Qarrafa lies the resting place that still holds
A fire for him to extinguish and ignite
غدا محمد محموداً وخلفني
أذم هماً رثى لي منه حسادي
Tomorrow Muhammad becomes Mahmoud, and he left me
Grieving, he eulogized me, to the dismay of my enviers
مررت بالربع والوادي فأوحشني
وقيل لي مات أنس الربع والوادي
I passed by the quarter and valley, so it saddened me
And I was told the companion of the quarter and valley died
وسار فوق جمال ما تعودها
وما جمال المنايا غير أعواد
And he rode on more beautiful than what it was accustomed to
And nothing is more beautiful than biers
تحدو به زفرات لا أقول لها
مهلاً ترفق بقلبي أيها الحادي
Cheered by sighs to which I do not say
Gently, be kind to my heart O guide
ترفق البر والتقوى وزودني
حزناً فشتان بين الزاد والزاد
Kindness, piety and provision prepared me
Great sorrow, so much between provision and provision
يا من يذكرني صوت الأذان به
إذا جرى فيه ذكر المصطفى الهادي
O you who reminds me by the call to prayer
When the name of the guiding Mustafa is mentioned in it
أشكو إليك صدى قلبي وعلته
فهل تروي بوصل غلة الصادي
I complain to you of the echo of my heart and its ailment
Will you quench the agonies of the pursuer?
مالي أزورك مزوراً وتشهد لي
شواهد الحال مع قربي وإبعادي
Why would I visit you like a visitor when you witness
The state of my condition despite my nearness and distance
جفوتني ولك الخلق الكريم فلم
عودتني منك خلقاً غير معتاد
You ignored me, yet you are of noble character, so why
Have you not treated me in a way I'm unaccustomed?
من استنبت لتأنيبي إذا جمحت
خواطري عند إصداري وإيرادي
Who germinated to reproach me when
My thoughts went astray upon my issuing and composing
ومن أمنت على سري ليحفظه
فيما يعود بإصلاح وإفساد
And who did I trust with my secret to preserve it
In what brings about reform or corruption?
بيني وبينك ميعاد تزورك بي
في بنات الردى من غير ميعاد
Between you and I is an appointment I will visit you in
Without appointment, in the daughters of decay
تضم روحك روحي عند مقدمها
وتلتقي فيه أجساد بأجساد
Your soul will embrace my soul upon its arrival
And bodies will meet with bodies
