فإن طرفك للألباب يغتال

If your kindness is prone to admiration

Then your glance to the wise is fatal

قلوبنا بين هجر منك أو صلة

يقتادها لك إعراض وإقبال

Our hearts between your abandonment or connection

Led by your aloofness and inclination

أخلفت يا جمل زجر الفأل فاعتمدي

فعل الجميل عسى أن يصدق الفال

Fulfill, O beautiful one, the omen’s deterrence

Maybe the good deed will confirm the fortune

ما كان أدنى مراد الوصل لو كسلت

على النشاط إلى الهجرات كسال

It was not the least intention of connection if you were lazy

To diligence towards estrangements, laziness

عصية العهد والميثاق يحملها

على الهوى في الهوى دل وإدلال

Disobedience of the covenant and pact it carries

To passion in passion, a guide and coddling

ترنحت بنسيم العذل ناعمة

ملت فمالت وغصت البان ميال

She swayed with the breeze of tenderness, gentle

She leaned so she tilted and the teeth clenched, angled

سكرى ولا خمر إلا عذب ريقتها

كأن ريق لماها العذب جريال

Intoxicated without wine except the sweetness of her saliva

As if the sweetness of her water is a brook

داوت بصحة جسمي سقم مقلتها

فما أبل ومالي منه إبلال

She cured the health of my body, the affliction of her glance

So I did not recover and did not revere from it

في روضة الحسن منها كلما سنحت

من رائق الحسن أشباه وأمثال

In the garden of beauty whenever ripe

Of the delicacies of beauty, some and examples

للأقحوانة منها حسن مبسمها

وللشقائق منها الخد والخال

For the meadow saffron from it the smile of her mouth

And for the anemones from it the cheek and mole

لا تسحبي أنني أصغي إلى عذل

ضلت بصيرة من يهديه عذال

Reproach me not that I listen to the blame

I lost sight of who guides him, blame

ملكت قاصيتي لبي وناصيتي

حبي ففي البال من جراك بلبال

You have possessed my soul and my purpose

My love so in mind from pulling her, confusion

بالكامل بن أبي الفتح الوزير لنا

أبا الفوارس يوم الروع رئبال

O father of knights, the day of fright horrible

تكفلت لصدور الخيل عزمته

أن لا يصاب لها في الحرب أكفال

You guaranteed to the chests of steeds, determined

That their shoulders in war are not hit

وإن طائشة الأرماح إن هديت

براحتيه وإلا فهي ضلال

And if the spears of chaos, if I guide

With my hands, otherwise they are misguided

سمر تشق جفون النقع نافذة

كأنها لجفون النقع أميال

Brown that rip through the eyelids of the armored, piercing

As if they are to the eyelids of the armored, miles

مرواد من نحور الدارعين لها

مكاحل ودم الأوداج إكحال

Yearned from the throats of the armored, for them

Bruises and the blood of veins is kohl

كأن في كل نحر من تشرعها

يوم الوغى عسلاً يجنيه عسال

للسيف والضيف في يومي ندى وردى

منه نزال إذا حلا وإنزال

تختط بيض طلاه كل عامرة

من الطلى فتراها وهي أطلال

It snatches the eggs of its elevation every landmark

From elevation, so you see them as ruins

إذا غدت من سحاب النقع بارقة

فاللمع والنقع أوجال وآجال

When it comes from the clouds of the armored, flashing

Then the shine and armored, destinies and terms

لله عزمك من قوص ومورده

فسطاط مصر ودون الورد أهوال

For God your determination from bows and watering place

The abode of Egypt and besides roses, horrors

نازعتم آل رزيك على شرف

لو لم تزيلهم عنه لما زالوا

You opposed the house of your rival on nobility

If you did not remove them from it, it would not have vanished

برأيك انفتلت تلك الحبال لهم

وأنت بالرأي نقاص وفتال

With your view those ropes untied for them

And you in opinion, reducer and separater

إن لم تهاجر إلى جيرون ممتطياً

جرداً يصاحبها قود وشملال

If you do not emigrate to Giron riding

Bareback accompanied by firewood and clothes

فقد أقمت مقاماً كان موقفه

برداً على كبد العلياء سلسال

Then you took a stand whose position

Was cold on the liver of nobles, chain

حزت الشجاعة أفعالاً وتسمية

إذ لم يروعك آساد وأصلال

You took courageous deeds and naming

When frightening lions and wolves did not alarm you

وما مضى بك يوم ليس فيه على

أيام ضرغام تدبير وأعمال

And no day has passed you in which you had no

Plans and deeds like the days of Dirgham

وإن أيام بلبيس لعالمة

منك الغناء وإن لم يدر جهال

And the days of Bilbays are a sign

From you of singing though the ignorant do not know

أبليت فيها بما سيرت من عدد

ومن عديد إلى الأعداء ينثال

You excelled in them in what you did of numbers

And soldiers to the enemies, countless

لولا بيوت من الأموال جدت بها

على عساكرهم لم يستقم حال

Were it not for houses of wealth you built with them

For their troops, the situation would not have been fixed

وقد سحبت إلى يحيى ململمة

لها من الحلق الماذي أذيال

And you dragged to Yahya winding

With trailing hems from the slippery slope

قارعته فتشظى عود صعدته

ضعفاً وهل يتساوى النبع والضال

You confronted him so his fragile being shattered

Weakly, can the spring and misguided equal?

وافى إلى شاطئي مصر وصحبته

ممن فللت شبا حديه أفلال

And he came to the shore of my Egypt and his company

Of whom you made the youths’ blades sharp blades

حملت عن شاور أثقال دولته

حتى لخفت مهمات وأثقال

You carried from Shawr the burdens of his state

Until you lightened pressing matters and weights

هذي الوزارة قد ألبستها حللاً

قشيبة وبعهدي وهي أسمال

This ministry, you have clothed it in garments

Aged, and in my covenant, and it rags

عادت إلى أنسها الماضي وبهجتها

فدارها اليوم دار منك محلال

It returned to its old comfort and joy

So its home today because of you is legal

أعدتها وهي معطار النسيم وقد

مضت عليها ليال وهي مبقال

You restored it while it is the scent of the breeze, and

Nights have passed over it while it remains

أنت المشار إليه قبل أسرته

برتبة لم يشنها القيل والقال

You are the one referred to before his family

With a position no speaking and saying can belittle

إذا نطقت فمسموع وممتثل

وإن سكت فإعظام وإجلال

If you speak you are heard and obeyed

And if silent, reverence and veneration

ملك يصلى إلى أفعال سؤدده

لا بل عليها لأهل المدح أقوال

A King who prays to the deeds of your arm

Rather, people praise them in speech

تحلى بصدق سجاياه مدائحنا

جيد تحلى بغير الصدق معطال

Your sincerity adorns our praises’ qualities

A neck adorned without sincerity has defects

قد استرق قلوب العالمين له

وجه جميل محياه وإجمال

He has stolen the hearts of both worlds for him

A beautiful face, his smile, and composure

فللمكارم من إشراق غرته

تهلل ولصوت الحمد إهلال

So for noble deeds from the radiance of his youth

Exultation, and for the voice of praise, submission

ترنو نواظرنا منه إلى ملك

على الملوك له فضل وإفضال

Our sights turn from it to a king

Above kings he has merit and favor

لم يستووا معه مذ كان في شرف

إلا كما يتساوى الماء والآل

They did not equal him since he had nobility

Except as water and vinegar equal

كأن أيامه وهي التي حسنت

عندي من العمر أسحار وآصال

As if his days which have beautified

In my view of life, dawns and nightfalls

أنا الولي الذي صحت مودته

وليس عندك فيما قلت إشكال

I am the loyal one whose loyalty proved true

And you have no doubt in what I said

وقد رأيت جميل الرأي أغفلني

وكان لي منه إحفاء وإحفال

And I saw the beauty of opinion distracted me

And I was awed and honored by it

خفضت من بعد رفع الحال منزلتي

وكان ينصبها التمييز والحال

After raising status I lowered my position

And the situation and state were raising it

أنت المسيح وآمالي بها سقم

وما تموت لمن يرجوك آمال

You are the Christ and my hopes in it are sick

Hopes do not die for one who hopes in you

وما أريد سوى بشر وتكرمة

إن الكرامة في حقي هي المال

And I want nothing but good news and generosity

For generosity, to me, is wealth

وليهنك القادم الميمون من رجب

يحدو ركائبه يمن وإقبال

And let the auspicious newcomer of Rajab gladden you

Its mounts urged on by luck and inclination

مبشر بدوام العز ما علقت

شول ووافى عقيب الفطر شوال

Bringing good news of lasting glory, for I tied
