خادم ذيل المجلس العادلي

وغرس عصر الصالح الكافل

Servant at the end of the just council

And the planter of the era of the helpful patron

يقبل الأرض وينهي إلى

مالك رق الحق والباطل

He kisses the ground and leads to

The owner of the fragility of truth and falsehood

وواحد العصر الذي فعله

حلية هذا الزمن العاطل

And the one of the era which he did

An ornament for this idle time

ومطلع الشمس على دسته

من بعد ذاك القمر الآفل

And the rising sun in his hand

After that waning moon

قضية قد كنت عن ذكرها

بغيرها في شغل شاغل

An issue I had been from mentioning it

Busy with another, preoccupied

وذاك أني لم أزل قانع النف

س بما أوليت من نائل

That is because I have not ceased being satisfied in my soul

With what I was given of attainments

مستغنياً بالفيض من وبلكم

عن كل ذي طل وذي وابل

Self-sufficient with your grace

From every demanding and conferring one

مشرف القصد بأبوابكم

مكرماً عن ذلة السائل

My intention exalted at your doors

Honored from the humiliation of the beggar

إذا جاءني من قال قد زادك

العادل فاشكر منه العادل

If one came to me saying the just increased you

Thank the just one for it

فقمت في الناس خطيباً له

محتفلاً في المجمع الحافل

I would stand among the people preaching for him

Celebrating in the crowded assembly

أستوهب الله لأيامه

سعادة العاجل والآجل

I ask Allah for the happiness of his days

In the present and the future

فإنه خفف عن كاهلي

أثقال هم أتعبت كاهلي

For he lightened from my shoulders

Burdens of worries that wearied my shoulders

وما درى الخادم حتى أتى

من قال لم تحصل على طائل

The servant did not know until there came

One who said you have gained no use

إن كان لاحظ لذي فاقة

في حاصل ليس من الحاصل

If there is no fortune for the impoverished one

In proceeds that are not from the proceeds

فانتظر التوفير في راتب

بقية العام أو الداخل

Then wait for sufficiency in salary

The rest of the year or the incoming

قلت ومن يضمن لي مهجتي

بأنها تبقى إلى قابل

I said: And who guarantees for me my gut

That it remains until the next

فعندها أطرقت من خجلة

تخجل خد الأمل الناصل

Then I bowed my head in shyness

Ashamed like the cheek of the attainable hope

وعاد في الرأس عطاس الرجا

يسحب ذيل الطالع النازل

And the sneeze of wish returned in the head

Dragging the tail of the declining fortune

وعشرات أخلاف در المنى

بعد امتلاء الضرة الحافل

And tens of offspring of the cherished

After filling the loaded bucket

وأدخل البازل في حلمه

فارتفعت شقشقة البازل

And the insolent entered his dream

So the uproar of the insolent rose

واهاً لها من فرحة أصبحت

مثل خداج الناقة الحامل

Oh what a joy it was that became

Like the tattoo of the pregnant she-camel

وكان من أصعب ما مر بي

شماتة الحاسد والجاهل

And of the most difficult that passed me

Was the gloating of the envious and ignorant

وصاحب قصته قصتي

وغنما ناصره خاذلي

And the companion whose story was my story

And whoever supported him betrayed me

لما انقضت حاجته لامني

يا رحمة المعذول والعاذل

When his need for me ended, he blamed me

Oh pity for the wronged and abandoned one!

ما قصد النصح ولكنه

تولع الفارس بالراجل

He did not intend advice but rather

The knight was infatuated with the infantryman

قلت وقد أعرضت عن عرضه

إذ ليس للذم بمستاهل

I said, and I ignored his offer

For there is no deserving of blame

لولا الدنانير التي لم تزل

تشد أزر المائد المائل

If not for the dinars that did not cease

To support the leaning table

كنت إذاً أطيش من ريشة

يقذفها الموج إلى الساحل

I would have been foolish like a feather

Cast by a wave to the coast

ستة آلاف كما قيل لي

وعهدة الصدق على القائل

Six thousand as I was told

And the promise of truth is upon the speaker

دعابة كلفني ذكرها

على جنون الأدب العاقل

A joke that cost me mentioning it

Against the sanity of intelligent literature

أسقيه منها غير مستحقب

إثماً من الله ولا واغل

I give him from it undeservedly

A sin from Allah, and no wavering
