أَغَدراً يا زَمانُ وَيا شَبابُ
أُصابُ بِذا لَقَد عَظُمَ المُصابُ
Alas, O Time and O Youth
I have been struck with great calamity
وَما جَزَعي لِأَن غَرُبَ التَصابي
وَحَلَّقَ عَن مَفارِقِيَ الغُرابُ
Yet I do not grieve that my friends are gone
And the ravens circle to leave me
فَقَبلَ الشَيبِ أَسلَفتُ الغَواني
قِلىً وَأَمالَني عَنها اِجتِنابُ
Before grey hairs I enjoyed pleasures
Roasting meat while modesty prevented me
عَفَفتُ عَنِ الحِسانِ فَلَم يَرُعني
المَشيبُ وَلَم يُنَزِّقُني الشَبابُ
I was chaste not overcome by youth or age
The days and my soul contend
تُجاذِبُني يَدُ الأَيّامِ نَفسي
وَيوشِكُ أَن يَكونَ لَها الغِلابُ
And soon shall triumph o’er all
By kin and friend alike betrayed
وَتَغدُرُ بي الأَقارِبُ وَالأَداني
فَلا عَجَبٌ إِذا غَدَرَ الصِحابُ
No wonder if comrades failed
I rise though the nights have felled me
نَهَضتُ وَقَد قَعَدنَ بِيَ اللَيالي
فَلا خَيلٌ أَعَنَّ وَلا رِكابُ
No horse or rider to aid
My crime but fortune’s encountered woes
وَما ذَنبي إِذا اِتَّفَقَت خُطوبٌ
مُغالِبَةٌ وَأَيّامٌ غِضابُ
O’ercoming days and wrathful blows
Yet I hope the days shall spare me
وَآمُلُ أَن تَقي الأَيّامُ نَفسي
وَفي جَنبي لَها ظِفرٌ وَنابُ
With victory and sharp claws ready
Why remain with men who hearing
فَما لي وَالمُقامُ عَلى رِجالٍ
دَعَت بِهِمُ المَطامِعُ فَاِستَجابوا
Ambition's call did heed its plea
Today I see naught like craven hope
وَلَم أَرَ كَالرَجاءِ اليَومَ شَيئاً
تَذِلُّ لَهُ الجَماجِمُ وَالرِقابُ
With heads and necks bent low
Wronged though they had bowed and gained
وَكانَ الغَبنُ لَو ذَلّوا وَنالوا
فَكَيفَ إِذاً وَقَد ذَلّوا وَخابوا
But now humiliated and denied
They seek wealth yet poverty is best
يُريدونَ الغِنى وَالفَقرُ خَيرٌ
إِذا ما الذُلُّ أَعقَبَهُ الطِلابُ
When baseness follows greed
Some nothingness is pride and glory
وَبَعضُ العُدمِ مَأثَرَةٌ وَفَخرٌ
وَبَعضُ المالِ مَنقَصَةٌ وَعابُ
Some wealth but blemish and disgrace
My shoots prosper and saddle-bags wait
بَناني وَالعِنانُ إِذا نَبَت بي
رُبى أَرضٍ وَرَحلي وَالرِكابُ
As dew makes the meadows shine
Of mares whose faults disappear
وَسابِغَةٌ كَأَنَّ السَردَ فيها
زُلالُ الماءِ لَمَّعَهُ الحَبابُ
When the valiant’s threats expose them
Caparisoned they avoid the herd
مِنَ اللائي يُماطُ العَيبُ عَنها
إِذا نُثِلَت لَدى الرَوعِ العِيابُ
Their hooves resound, the dogs bark
With forelocks parted like night split open
إِذا اِدُّرِعَت تَجَنَّبَتِ المَواضي
مَعاجِمَها وَقَهقَهَتِ الكِعابُ
As the Pleiades shine clear
Rump high over dales I lodged
وَمُشرِفَةُ القَذالِ تَمُرُّ رَهواً
كَما عَسَلَت عَلى القاعِ الذِئابُ
Where night, stars and clouds sleep
Till dawn rends the veil aside
مُجَلِّيَةٌ تَشُقُّ بِها يَداها
كَما جَلّى لِغايَتِهِ العُقابُ
As falcon's hood removed
They know my aspirations as the hawk’s
وَمَرقَبَةٍ رَبَأتُ عَلى ذُراها
وَلِلَّيلِ اِنجِفالٌ وَاِنجِيابُ
In a hill-cleft I lodged safe
To protect a side and gain honor
بِقُربِ النَجمِ عالِيَةِ الهَوادي
يَبيتُ عَلى مَناكِبِها السَحابُ
A man’s honor what his clan’s vigor guards
If fate calls do not obey
إِلى أَن لَوَّحَ الصُبحُ اِنفِتاقاً
كَما جُلّي عَنِ العَضبِ القِرابُ
None remain who refused and died
Kulayb when betrayed by malice fell
وَقَد عَرَفَت تَوَقُّلِيَ المَعالي
كَما عَرَفَت تَوَقُّلِيَ العِقابُ
Utaybah when tribe’s spears came
Alike he whom dust takes from us
وَنَقبِ ثَنِيَّةٍ سَدَدتُ فيها
أَصَمَّ كَأَنَّ لَهذَمَهُ شِهابُ
And whom earth hides from sight
Brief lives match those fully spanned
لِأَمنَعَ جانِباً وَأُفيدَ عِزّاً
وَعِزُّ المَرءِ ما عَزَّ الجَنابُ
Struggle our first breath
Death our last as we depart
إِذا هَولٌ دَعاكَ فَلا تَهَبهُ
فَلَم يَبقَ الَّذينَ أَبَوا وَهابوا
How long to roam fancying mirages
My eyes misled by every illusion
كُلَيبٌ عاقَصَتهُ يَذٌ وَأَودى
عُتَيبَةُ يَومَ أَقعَصَهُ ذُؤابُ
No battle stirred, no swords clash
No steeds sniffing, mouths afoam
سَواءٌ مَن أَقَلَّ التُربُ مِنّا
وَمَن وارى مَعالِمَهُ التُرابُ
No blood reddens their forelocks’ hair
Each heated flank strikes the foe and takes no blow,
وَإِنَّ مُزايِلَ العَيشِ اِختِصاراً
مُساوٍ لِلَّذينَ بَقوا فَشابوا
Before heroes dark as night hosts fall
How can a foe evade Murr’s blows
فَأَوَّلُنا العَناءُ إِذا طَلَعنا
إِلى الدُنيا وَآخِرُنا الذَهابُ
When allies teemed like locust swarms
Their misfortunes roared, disasters piled high,
إِلى كَم ذا التَرَدِّدُ في الأَماني
وَكَم يُلوي بِناظِرِيَ السَرابُ
There neither kin nor ties bind us
I shall court her with the sword’s edge manfully
وَلا نَقعٌ يُثارُ وَلا قَتامٌ
وَلا طَعنٌ يُشَبُّ وَلا ضِرابُ
When words and speech have failed
I want her though noses scorn
وَلا خَيلٌ مُعَقَّدَةُ النَواصي
يَموجُ عَلى شَكائِمِها اللُعابُ
O’ercoming those who bow in spite
My place against foes like the moon’s
عَلَيها كُلُّ مُلتَهِبُ الحَواشي
يُصيبُ مِنَ العَدوِّ وَلا يُصابُ
Barked at by hounds through the night
They cast at me patched up faults
أَمامَ مُجَلجِلٍ كَاللَيلِ تَهوي
أَواخِرَهُ الجَمايِلُ وَالقِبابُ
Yet know reproach touches me not
No shame can soil me
وَأَينَ يَحيدُ عَن مُضَرٍ عَدوٌّ
إِذا زَخَرَت وَعَبَّ لَها العُبابُ
No curses alarm me
Finding no fault they dressed me in their own
وَقَد زَأدَت ضَراغِمُها الضَواري
وَقَد هَدَرَت مَصاعِبُها الصِعابُ
And blamed their flaws on me
هُنالِكَ لا قَريبَ يَرُدُّ عَنّا
وَلا نَسَبٌ يَنُطُّ بِنا قَرابُ
سَأَخطُبُها بِحَدِّ السَيفِ فِعلاً
إِذا لَم يُغنِ قَولٌ أَو خِطابُ
وَآخُذُها وَإِن رُغِمَت أُنوفٌ
مُغالَبَةً وَإِن ذَلَّت رِقابُ
وَإِنَّ مُقامَ مِثلي في الأَعادي
مُقامُ البَدرِ تَنبَحُهُ الكِلابُ
رَمَوني بِالعُيوبِ مُلَفَّقاتٍ
وَقَد عَلِموا بِأَنّي لا أُعابُ
وَإِنّي لا تُدَنِّسُني المَخازي
وَإِنّي لا يُرَوِّعُني السِبابُ
وَلَمّا لَم يُلاقوا فيَّ عَيباً
كَسوني مِن عُيوبِهِمُ وَعابوا
