1. My two friends, nothing lies between Muḥarriq and me

    except the blows of spearpoints and keen-edged swords.

  2. Because of it, a grievous calamity came upon me, laying its breast

    upon the noblest house in the line of Luʾayy ibn Ghālib.

  3. And he made off with great-humped camels, their necks towering,

    their humps curving over their withers.

  4. I see my camels driven from their resting enclosure,

    the enemies shouting them onward from every side.

  5. Whenever they come in sight of the watering places at evening,

    they sob behind the herd—the sobbing of estranged she-camels.

  6. Whenever glory set its goal far away,

    we pressed toward it, breast-forward on noble she-camels.

  7. They race ahead of the tempest winds, as though they were

    the vanguards at the fore of the east wind and the crosswinds,

  8. emerging from a night whose stars seem

    like white pebbles on rugged, layered ground.
