    وَقَفاتِ الرَكائِبِ الأَنضاءِ

    Greet, between al-Naqā and al-Muṣallā,

    the halting places of the worn and weary mounts;

and the pilgrims’ evening journey on the Night of Jamʿ,

where, at Jamʿ, all longings gather.

And remember for me where my mounts knelt,

on the heights of Minā, and where my tent was pitched.

And make a point of mentioning me, when you are at al-Khay—

—f, to a gazelle among those gazelles.

Tell him: Do you think you remember what once was—

at the gate of the Red Qubaybah?

My companion said to me, the morning we met,

as we shared our plaint of hearts parched by fire:

“You had told me that, in longing,

you were bound to me, and that your illness was mine.

What say you to departing, to loading up for part—

—ing? Why do we wait to weep?”

He had scarcely said it when I bent beneath what gripped me,

catching my tears in the loose fold of my cloak.
