What feast of passion did my heart regain

After the night clouds thundered with the rain

If one had called me from a land not yours

For love, I would not have obeyed the call

Where is the gazelle with the soft white throat

Who lights the embers with the moist sweet fruit

Whenever its brightness is quenched by the light

Of beauty from its neck and heart’s delight

It settled in the meadow long ago

And there we found the vestige of its glow

Would that our loved ones, radiant and fair

Had let us taste the cool sweet water there

Ah, that one glance upon the hillside where

It led me, raptured, to the hillside deer

Evil they apportioned 'twixt mine eye and heart

Why should my lover suffer for their art?
