أَكَذا المَنونُ تُقَنطِرُ الأَبطالا
أَكَذا الزَمانُ يُضَعضِعُ الأَجيالا
Thus the fates sever the heroes,
Thus time shakes the generations.
أَكَذا تُصابُ الأُسدُ وَهيَ مُذِلَّةٌ
تَحمي الشُبولَ وَتَمنَعُ الأَغيالا
Thus the lions are afflicted in their humiliation,
Safekeeping the cubs and preventing the predators.
أَكَذا تُقامُ عَنِ الفَرائِسِ بَعدَما
مَلَأَت هَماهِمُها الوَرى أَوجالا
Thus the commanding heights are vacated, after
Their zeal had filled the lands with loftiness.
أَكَذا تُحَطُّ الزاهِراتُ عَنِ العُلى
مِن بَعدِ ما شَأَتِ العُيونَ مَنالا
Thus the blossoms fall from the heights,
After having fulfilled the eyes with ends.
أَكَذا تُكَبُّ البُزلُ وَهيَ مَصاعِبٌ
تَطوي البَعيدَ وَتَحمِلُ الأَثقالا
Thus the ships founder as obstacles
That traverse the far and carry the loads.
أَكَذا تُغاضُ الزاخِراتُ وَقَد طَغَت
لُجَجاً وَأَورَدَتِ الظِماءَ زُلالا
Thus the blossoming ones withdraw after having overflowed
With abundance and brought the thirsty, drink.
يا طالِبَ المَعروفِ حَلَّقَ نَجمُهُ
حُطَّ الحُمولَ وَعَطِّلِ الأَجمالا
O seeker of favors, his star has declined,
Lay down your burdens and render the beautiful, ugly.
وَأَقِم عَلى يَأسٍ فَقَد ذَهَبَ الَّذي
كانَ الأَنامُ عَلى نَداهُ عِيالا
And stay in despair for the one who
People depended on for livelihood has departed.
مَن كانَ يَقري الجَهلَ عِلماً ثاقِباً
وَالنَقصَ فَضلاً وَالرَجاءَ نَوالا
He who made ignorance piercing knowledge
And deficiency, virtue, and hopefulness, attainment.
وَيُجَبِّنُ الشُجعانَ دونَ لِقائِهِ
يَومَ الوَغى وَيُشَجِّعُ السُؤالا
And he emboldened the brave without meeting them
On the day of battle, and encouraged questioning.
خَلَعَ الرَدى ذاكَ الرِداءَ نَفاسَةً
عَنّا وَقَلَّصَ ذَلِكَ السِربالا
He took off the garment of leadership from us
And shortened that robe.
خَبَرٌ تَمَخَّضَ بِالأَحِبَّةِ ذِكرُهُ
قَبلَ اليَقينِ وَأَسلَفَ البَلبالا
News that ripened in confusion before certainty
And brought forward trepidation.
حَتّى إِذا جَلّى الظُنونَ يَقينُهُ
صَدَعَ القُلوبَ وَأَسقَطَ الأَحمالا
Until when certainty clarified, doubts
Broke the hearts and dropped the loads.
الشَكُّ أَبرَدُ لِلحَشا مِن مِثلِهِ
يا لَيتَ شَكّي فيهِ دامَ وَطالا
Doubt is colder to the breasts than it is,
If only my doubt in it lasted and continued.
جَبَلٌ تَسَنَّمَتِ البِلادُ هِضابَهُ
حَتّى إِذا مَلَأَ الأَقالِمَ زالا
A mountain whose highlands the countries climbed,
Until when it filled the pens, it declined.
يا طَودُ كَيفَ وَأَنتَ عاديُّ الذُرى
أَلقى بِجانِبِكَ الرَدى زِلزالا
O tall mountain, how could you, enemy of time,
Bring down failure on your side?
إِن قَطَّعَ الآمالَ مِنكَ فَإِنَّهُ
مِن بَعدِ يَومِكَ قَطَّعَ الأُمّالا
If it cut off hopes from you, then it
Cut off aspirations after your day.
ما كُنتُ أَوَّلَ كَوكَبٍ تَرَكَ الدُنا
وَسَما إِلى نُظَرائِهِ فَتَعالى
I was not the first planet to leave the world
And ascend to its peers, so rise above!
أَنَفاً مِنَ الدُنيا بَتَتَّ حِبالَها
وَنَزَعتَ عَنكَ قَميصَها الأَسمالا
You refused the world though it unraveled its ropes
And withdrew its rough shirt from you.
ذا المَنزِلُ المِظعانُ قَد فارَقتَهُ
وَغَداً تُبَوَّءُ مَنزِلاً مِحلالا
That hateful dwelling you left
And tomorrow you will be given a pure dwelling.
لا رُزءَ أَعظَمُ مِن مُصابِكَ إِنَّهُ
وَصَلَ الدُموعَ وَقَطَّعَ الأَوصالا
No loss is greater than your loss, it
United tears and severed limbs.
يا آمِرَ الأَقدارِ كَيفَ أَطَعتَها
أَوَما وَقاكَ جَلالُكَ الآجالا
O ordainer of fates, how did you obey them
Or did not your majesty protect the terms?
كَيفَ اِغتَفَلتَ فَفاجَأَتكَ بِغُرَّةٍ
أَوَ لَيسَ كُنتَ المِخلَطَ المِزيالا
How were you taken by surprise with a sudden raid
Or were you not the mixer, the transformer?
لَم تَكفِ يا كافي الكُفاةِ مَنيَّةً
نَفَذَت إِلَيكَ صَوارِماً وَأَلالا
Why could you not stop a death, O sufficient for the sufficient,
That came at you with spears and blades?
أَلّا وَقى المَجدُ المُؤَثَّلُ رَبَّهُ
أَلّا زَوى المِقدارُ أَلّا حالا
Alas - glory protected its Lord
Alas - fate bent, alas the state!
أَلّا أَقالَتكَ اللَيالي عَثرَةً
يا مَن إِذا عَثَرَ الزَمانُ أَقالا
Alas - the nights misguided you,
O you who when time stumbles, rights it!
إِنَّ الَّذي أَنحى إِلَيكَ بِسَهمِهِ
قَدَرٌ يَنالُ ذُبابُهُ الرِئبالا
Indeed, the one who shot you with his arrow
Is a fate that afflicts commoners and nobles.
لا مُسمِعُ الإِنباضِ مِنهُ فَيُتَّقى
يَوماً وَلا مالي الجَفيرِ نِبالا
Not one whose whisper is heard to be avoided
A day, nor one who fills the deserts with torrents.
وَأَرى اللَيالي طارِحاتِ حِبالِها
تَستَوثِقُ الأَعيانَ وَالأَرذالا
I see the nights unleashing their ropes
To interrogate both the notables and the wicked.
يَبرينَ عودَ النَبعِ غَيرَ فَوارِقٍ
بَينَ النَباتِ كَما بَرَينَ الضالا
How you summoned virtue in censure for long
You have become dispraised and degraded.
لا تَأمَنِ الدُنيا عَلَيكَ فَإِنَّها
ذاتُ البُعولِ تُبَدِّلُ الأَبدالا
How many arguments in religion you entered, perilous,
The phoenixes fluttering helplessly.
وَتَناذَرِ الدَهرَ الَّذي شَرَعَ الرَدى
وَتَخَرَّمَ الأَذواءَ وَالأَقيالا
With the point of your spear or your eloquent tongue
Stabbing that splits the enemies with dispute.
وَاِستَرجَلَ الأَملاكَ قَسراً بَعدَما
رَكِبوا مِنَ الشَرَفِ المُطِلِّ جِبالا
You are the one if you wished, you would stab the enemies in their heads
And stir their skulls with your sword.
وَطَوى مَقاوِلَ مِن نِزارٍ ذادَةٍ
في الحَربِ لا كُشفاً وَلا أَميالا
A ruler you made mighty
And many a ruler is weaker than your men.
قَومٌ إِذا وَقَعَ الصَريخُ تَناهَضوا
بِالخَيلِ قُبّاً وَالقُنيُّ طِوالا
Indeed, he who pulled up his tail in dread of you
Bowed down and dragged after you the tails.
وَتُرى خِفافاً في الوَغى فَإِذا اِنتَدَوا
وَتَلاغَطَ النادي رَأَيتَ ثِقالا
I never feared you would slip due to an accident
When you made your feet as the stirrups and shanks.
صاحَت بِهِم نُوَبُ اللَيالي صَيحَةً
فَتَتابَعوا لِدُعائِها أَرسالا
Time pushed misfortunes to you in one push
And directed the valley to flow to you.
يَتَواكَلونَ المَوتَ جُبناً بَعدَما
كانوا أُسودَ مَغاوِرٍ أَبطالا
O master of the sword, sheathed is its west,
How much the sliding spark of flame spent the night!
نَزَعوا الحَمائِلَ عَن عَواتِقِ فِتيَةٍ
كانوا لِكُلِّ عَظيمَةٍ حُمّالا
If an unjust fate has ruined the doer
Then he established and immortalized the deeds.
مِن بَعدِ ما دَعَموا القِبابَ وَخَيَّسوا
ذُلُلَ المَطيِّ وَدَمَّنوا الأَطلالا
They sought inheritance but did not see after him
Except loftiness, merits, and majesty.
عَرَبٌ إِذا دَفَعوا الجِيادَ لِغارَةٍ
هَزّوا العُبابَ وَخَضخَضوا الأَوشالا
Alas - they missed the inheritance of risk
That maintained praise and squandered money.
مِن كُلِّ مُنهِبِ مالِهِ سُؤّالَهُ
أَو بالِغٍ بِعَطائِهِ ما نالا
He knew time and its changes better
Than to grow or hoard wealth.
أَو بائِتٍ يَرعى النُجومَ لِغارَةٍ
وَيَعُدُّ لِلمَغدى قَناً وَنِصالا
The key to every bounty and lord of comrades
Who were locks upon their money.
لَم تَرهَبِ الأَقدارُ عِزَّتَهُ وَلا
اِتَّقَتِ النَوائِبُ جَمعَهُ العُضّالا
They were strangers among people but became
After the absent star, like them.
وَعَصائِبُ اليَمَنِ الَّذينَ تَبَوَّأوا
قُلَلَ الهِضابِ وَشَرَّدوا الأَوعالا
A noble tribe whose eyes when they put kohl on
Seduce the noble tribes and cut off kinsmen.
كانوا فُحولَ وَغىً تُسانِدُ بِالقَنا
لا كَالفُحولِ تُسانِدُ الأَجذالا
When their breasts stirred in a stand
They held back speech and fettered words.
زَفَرَ الزَمانُ عَلَيهِمُ فَتَطارَحوا
فِرَقاً وَطاروا بِالمَنونِ جِفالا
With arrows like shooting stars chasing their like
And neighs of steeds chasing neighs.
وَعَلى الهَباءَةِ آلُ بَدرٍ إِنَّهُم
طَرَحوا لَهُ الأَسلابَ وَالأَنفالا
Who after him is a doer like his deeds
Or a speaker after him of what he said?
مِن بَعدِ ما خَلَطوا العَجاجَ وَجَلجَلوا
تِلكَ الزَعازِعَ وَالقَنا العَسّالا
A mark that raises its neck to questioning
And veils those moved to tears and torn.
وَالمُنذِرونَ الغُرُّ شَرَّدَ مِنهُمُ
حَيّاً عَلى لَقَمِ العِراقِ حِلالا
O you who seek his equal from this time
Alas - you task time with the impossible!
وَالأَزدَشيرِيّونَ أَبرَزَ مِنهُمُ
مُتَفَيِّئينَ مِنَ النَعيمِ ظِلالا
Time is more miserly after his absence
Than to redo for his like, forms.
تَلوي لَهُم عُنقُ الفُراتِ بِمَدِّهِ
وَيُرَوِّقونَ البارِدَ السَلسالا
I see perfection harvested from him because
He is the aim of misfortunes, given perfection.
مِن مَعشَرٍ وَرَدوا المَنونَ وَمَعشَرٍ
سَلَبوا الحِجالَ وَأَلبَسوا الأَحجالا
May God bless you from every resting place
After the bier, the stretchers, and the sands.
قَد غادَروا الإيوانَ بَعدَ فِراقِهِم
يَنعى القَطينَ وَيَندُبُ الحُلّالا
Decay ruined that beauty realized
And pulled that speaking, wandering one.
إِن كُنتَ تَأمُلُ بَعدَهُم مَهلاً فَقَد
مَنَّتكَ نَفسُكَ في الزَمانِ ضَلالا
You saw every ridden animal replaced after your day
With the reins instead of the litters.
لِمَنِ الضَوامِرُ عُرِّيَت أَمطاؤُها
حَولَ الخِيامِ تُنازِعُ الأَمطالا
They discarded turbans for you in sorrow
When they saw you walking or in reverence.
بُدِّلنَ مِن لُبسِ الشَكيمِ مَقاوِداً
مَربوطَةً وَمِنَ السُروجِ جِلالا
They said when surprised by your passing bier
Who tilted that great mountain so it leaned?
فُجِعَت بِمُنصَلِتٍ يُعَرِّضُ لِلقَنا
أَعناقَها وَيُحَصِّنُ الأَكفالا
They ripped their collar fronts and hastened
To bite their fingers, left and right.
لِمَنِ المَطايا غَيرُ ذاتِ رَحائِلٍ
فارَقنَ ذاكَ السَدوَ وَالإِرقالا
They only tore your robe and hurt
Only the fingers - we got from you, contention.
أَمسَت تَمَنَّعُ بِالسِقابِ وَطالَما
جُعِلَ الظُبى لِرِضاعِهِنَّ فِصالا
Who will compensate what they tore
And be relied upon for hope and price?
مَن كانَ يَحمِلُ فَوقَهُنَّ عُصابَةً
مِثلَ الصُقورِ غَرانِقاً أَزوالا
Palms were emptied of your bestowal after which
The magnitude of your affliction preoccupied all.
مَن كانَ يُجشِمُهُنَّ كُلَّ مَفازَةٍ
تَلَدُ المَنونَ وَتُنبِتُ الأَهوالا
It is difficult for me that a seeker would shake you
So you would refuse or twist giving away.
لِمَنِ النُصولُ نَشِبنَ في أَغمادِها
كَلَفَ الظُبى لا يَنتَظِرنَ صِقالا
Or one visiting you would replace, after joy there,
By your side, an impossible resting place.
لِمَنِ الأَسِنَّةُ قَد نَصَلنَ عَنِ القَنا
وَعَدِمنَ جَرّاً في الوَغى وَمَجالا
Or the shout would call you in deep distress
Piled upon it, but you would not answer.
إِن صينَ سَردُكَ في العِيابِ فَطالَما
أَمسى عَلَيكَ مُذَيَّلاً وَمُذالا
O healer of ills, how could you overlook
An illness time threw at you, obstinate?
كَم حَجَّةٍ في الدينِ خُضتَ غِمارَها
هَدرَ الفَنيقِ تَخَمَّطاً وَصِيالا
O remover of burdens, how could you accept
For the side of your corpse, an impossible place?
بِسِنانِ رُمحِكَ أَو لِسانِكَ موسِعاً
طَعناً يَشُقُّ عَلى العِدا وَجِدالا
I used to hope I would see you and gain
Virtue while others sought virtue.
إِن نَكَّسَ الإِسلامُ بَعدَكَ رَأسَهُ
فَلَقَد رُزي بِكَ مَوئِلاً وَمَآلا
And benefit from your hearing my words and merits
And your days would benefit me, prospering.
واهاً عَلى الأَقلامِ بَعدَكَ إِنَّها
لَم تَرضَ غَيرَ بَنانِ كَفِّكَ آلا
I would make a refuge of you for the doubt of my fate
That would turn back its armies, defeated.
أَفقَدنَ مِنكَ شُجاعَ كُلِّ بَلاغَةٍ
إِن قالَ جَلّى في المَقالِ وَجالا
But your time betrayed you without care
And returned the flags of guidance, forgotten.
مَن لَو يَشا طَعنَ العِدا بِرُؤوسِها
وَأَثارَ مِن جِريالِها قَسطالا
A grave split open its burial chamber on the hilltops
For the most honored, degraded by ruin in haste.
سُلطانُ مِلكٍ كُنتَ أَنتَ تُعِزُّهُ
وَلَرُبَّ سُلطانٍ أَعَزُّ رِجالا
If he touched the advice of men, then he often
Became revered by people and deferred to.
إِنَّ المُشَمِّرَ ذَيلَهُ لَكَ خيفَةً
أَرخى وَجَرَّرَ بَعدَكَ الأَذيالا
For the world to rob him, it took from him
Kindness and favor in full.
ما كُنتُ أَخشى أَن تَزِلَّ لِحادِثٍ
قَدَمٌ جَعَلتَ لَها الرِكابَ قِبالا
And cared for him like the caretaker, his steed
And quenched him like one who quenched hopes with him.
دَفَعَ الزَمانُ لَكَ النَوائِبَ دَفعَةً
وَتَصَوَّبَ الوادي إِلَيكَ فَسالا
يا شامِتاً بِالسَيفِ أُغمِدَ غَربُهُ
كَم هَبَّ مُندَلِقُ الغِرارِ وَصالا
إِن طَوَّحَ الفَعّالَ دَهرٌ ظالِمٌ
فَلَقَد أَقامَ وَخَلَّدَ الأَفعالا
طَلَبوا التُراثَ فَلَم يَرَوا مِن بَعدِهِ
إِلّا عُلاً وَفَضائِلاً وَجَلالا
هَيهاتَ فاتَهُمُ تُراثُ مُخاطِرٍ
حَفِظَ الثَناءَ وَضَيَّعَ الأَموالا
قَد كانَ أَعرَفَ بِالزَمانِ وَصَرفِهِ
مِن أَن يُثَمِّرَ أَو يُجَمِّعَ مالا
مِفتاحُ كُلِّ نَدىً وَرَبُّ مَعاشِرٍ
كانوا عَلى أَموالِهِم أَقفالا
كانَ الغَريبَةَ في الأَنامِ فَأَصبَحوا
مِن بَعدِ غارِبِ نَجمِهِ أَمثالا
قَرمٌ إِذا كَحَلَت بِهِ أَلحاظَها
شوسُ القُرومِ تُقَطِّعُ الأَبوالا
وَإِذا تَجايَشَتِ الصُدورُ بِمَوقِفٍ
حَبَسَ الكَلامَ وَقَيَّدَ الأَقوالا
بِصَوائِبٍ كَالشُهبِ تَتبَعُ مِثلَها
وَرِعالِ خَيلٍ يَتَّبِعنَ رِعالا
مَن فاعِلٌ مِن بَعدِهِ كَفِعالِهِ
أَو قائِلٌ مِن بَعدِهِ ما قالا
سِمعٌ يُرَفِّعُ لِلسُؤالِ سُجوفَهُ
وَيُحَجِّبُ الأَهزاجَ وَالأَرمالا
يا طالِباً مِن ذا الزَمانِ شَبيهَهُ
هَيهاتَ كَلَّفتَ الزَمانَ مُحالا
إِنَّ الزَمانَ أَضَنُّ بَعدَ وَفاتِهِ
مِن أَن يُعيدَ لِمِثلِهِ أَشكالا
وَأَرى الكَمالَ جَنى عَلَيهِ لِأَنَّهُ
غَرَضُ النَوائِبِ مَن أُعيرَ كَمالا
صَلّى الإِلَهُ عَلَيكَ مِن مُتَوَسِّدٍ
بَعدَ المِهادِ جَنادِلاً وَرِمالا
كَسَفَ البِلى ذاكَ الجَمالَ المُجتَلى
وَأَجَرَّ ذاكَ المِقوَلَ الجَوّالا
وَرَأَيتَ كُلَّ مَطيَّةٍ قَد بُدِّلَت
مِن بَعدِ يَومِكَ بِالزِمامِ عِقالا
طَرَحَ الرِجالُ لَكَ العَمائِمَ حَسرَةً
لَمّا رَأَوكَ تَسيرُ أَو إِجلالا
قالوا وَقَد فُجِؤوا بِنَعشِكَ سائِراً
مَن مَيَّلَ الجَبَلَ العَظيمَ فَمالا
وَتَبادَروا عَطَّ الجُيوبِ وَعاجَلوا
عَضَّ الأَنامِلِ يَمنَةً وَشِمالا
ما شَقَّقوا إِلّا كُساكَ وَأَلَّموا
إِلّا الأَنامِلَ نِلنَ مِنكَ سِجالا
مَن ذا يَكونُ مُعَوِّضاً ما مَزَّقوا
وَمُعَوَّلا لِمُؤَمَّلٍ وَثِمالا
فَرَغَت أَكُفٌّ مِن نَوالِكَ بَعدَها
وَأَطالَ عُظمُ مُصابِكَ الأَشغالا
أَعزَز عَلَيَّ بِأَن يَهُزُّكَ طالِبٌ
فَتَضَنَّ أَو تَلوي النَوالَ مَطالا
أَو أَن تُبَدِّلَ مَن يَؤُمُّكَ زائِراً
بَعدَ التَهَلُّلِ عِندَكَ اِستِهلالا
أَو أَن يُناديكَ الصَريخُ لِكُربَةٍ
حُشِدَت عَلَيهِ فَلا تُجيبُ مَقالا
يا شافِيَ الأَدواءِ كَيفَ جَهِلتَهُ
داءً رَماكَ بِهِ الزَمانُ عُضالا
يا كاشِفَ الأَمحالِ كَيفَ رَضيتَهُ
لِمَقيلِ جَنبِكَ مَنزِلاً مِمحالا
قَد كُنتُ آمُلُ أَن أَراكَ فَأَجتَني
فَضلاً إِذا غَيري جَنى أَفضالا
وَأُفيدُ سَمعَكَ مِقوَلي وَفَضائِلي
وَتُفيدُني أَيّامُكَ الإِقبالا
وَأَعُدُّ مِنكَ لِرَيبِ دَهري جُنَّةً
تَثني جُنودَ خُطوبِهِ فُلّالا
وَطَواكَ دَهرُكَ غَيرَ طَيِّ صِيانَةٍ
وَأَعادَ أَعلامَ الهُدى أَغفالا
قَبرٌ بِأَعلى الرَيِّ شُقَّ ضَريحُهُ
لِأَعَزَّ حَقَّرَهُ الرَدى إِعجالا
إِن يُمسِ مَوعِظَةَ الرِجالِ فَطالَما
أَمسى مُهاباً لِلوَرى وَمُهالا
لِتُسَلِّبِ الدُنيا عَلَيهِ فَإِنَّها
نَزَعَت بِهِ الإِحسانَ وَالإِجمالا
وَرَعاهُ مَن أَرعى البَرِيَةَ سَيبَهُ
وَسَقاهُ مَن أَسقى بِهِ الآمالا
