أَهلُ دِمَشقٍ لَهُمُ جامِعٌ
لَيسَ عَلى ما فيهِ تَعويلُ
The people of Damascus have a mosque;
there is no relying on what is in it.
بِالجامِعِ الصَّحنُ وَلَكِنَّهُ
مِن كُلِّ ما يُؤكَلُ مَغسولُ
The mosque has a courtyard, but it
is washed clean of everything edible.
وَفيهِ أَشجارٌ وَلَكِنَّها
لَم يُجنَ مِنها الدَهرَ مَأكولُ
And in it are trees, yet
nothing edible has ever been gathered from them.
