1. The people of Jayrun insisted on wronging

    their neighbor, and refused to grant him refuge.

  2. For many a guileless gazelle is mine there,

    for whose desertion my eye sheds abundant tears.

  3. He is elusive and skittish; my heart, too, flees the

    reproach over him, elusive and skittish.

  4. When he smiles, revealing his teeth, put to shame are

    the mouths of the lovely daisies.

  5. If his dream-image does not visit my bed

    in passing, then all visits are a sham.

  6. And before him, people had never seen, among

    branches of the bān tree, full moons appearing.

  7. And in the quarter of Bab al-Saghir, I have

    a gazelle whose affair is a grave concern to me.

  8. He is the white gazelle, yet he cannot be attained;

    before him the fierce lion is humbled.

  9. We are content with you: be just, then—or be unjust;

    for forsaking contentment in loving you is wickedness.
