عَتبتُ عَلى قِطِّ مَلكِ النُّحاةِ
وَقُلتُ أَتَيت بِغَيرِ الصَواب
I reproached the cat of the King of Grammarians,
And said, “You have done wrong:
عَضَضتَ يَداً خُلِقَت لِلنَدى
وَبَثِّ العُلومِ وَضَربِ الرِقاب
You bit a hand created for generosity,
And spreading knowledge and smiting necks.”
فَأَعرَضَ عَنّي وَقالَ اِتَّئِب
أَلَيسَ القِطاطُ أَعادي الكِلاب
Then it turned away from me and said, “Be ashamed!
Are cats not the enemies of dogs?”
