1. Your promise of a saddlebag and a leather mat

    Is lightning, but its flash is deceptive.

  2. A saddlebag—the soul departs before one obtains it;

    And the leather mat lies between the sword and the executioner's mat.

  3. You bear no blame; the blame belongs instead to whoever

    Settled in a valley devoid of crops.

  4. Whoever hopes for your bounty after that

    Then he, of all people, most deserves to be slapped.

  5. Had I not been Ashʿab, I would not have come away from

    ʿUrqūb's promises with nothing gained.
