1. I have a reproacher in love—how reproachful he is!

    And how far he strays from the path of justice!

  2. He ignorantly hopes to be seen driving

    Mercury away from Virgo's ascendant.

  3. A maiden, unjust in love;

    and her enchanting harp—how just it is!

  4. As though, in feeling its strings, she were

    Hippocrates, seeking the pulse of one he has nursed.

  5. How foolish the reproacher is in his judgment!

    For he is, without doubt, exceedingly witless.

  6. Who will give me justice against love for a harpist,

    whose strings set the heart quaking?

  7. Her strings kill her visitors;

    they do them harm, and theirs is a wail.

  8. Languid-eyed and bewitching,

    and her drowsy gaze—how deadly it is!

  9. And if her face met the full moon in

    its fullness, it would return having shamed the moon.

  10. And her figure is well proportioned, like a branch

    of the moringa—glory to Him who shaped it!

  11. She sways a branch upon a sand dune;

    her coy grace, as she dances, has made it bend.

  12. So whoever says that she has an equal

    in beauty in the world—how ignorant he is!

  13. In the heart, the fires of passion, whenever

    I recall her, are kindled and set ablaze.

  14. So whoever among all humankind has seen her

    at a gathering has attained what he hoped for.

  15. She is like the rose and its days;

    how beautiful the rose is, and how excellent!

  16. On her cheek the rose is ripe for plucking, without

    a doubt—oh, blessed is whoever kisses it!

  17. And her saliva is wine, yet the one who

    forbade it in its cup has made her saliva lawful.

  18. And the rose—how short its days!

    Yet its life in separation—how long it is!
