1. By God, the Lord of you both, ask her

to be gentle with a heart that has not forgotten her.

  2. May my father be ransom for a maiden whose face

has left the sun and moon no glory.

  3. The bough is nothing but her figure;

the rose is nothing but her two cheeks.

  4. She unjustly denied shedding my blood, but

her two eyes argued against her.

  5. Were she to appear before the rim

of the sun, her radiance would put it to shame.

  6. Nay, had my reproacher seen her mouth,

he would not have spoken in reproach.

  7. No gazelle in a meadow

on rugged ground, seeking her fawn,

  8. startled by the faint sound of a hunter

who rushed toward her and made for her,

  9. is ever lovelier to behold

than she—nor a fawn that followed the gazelle.

  10. Her neck is like the gazelle's,

and her two eyes are like the fawn's.

  11. Nothing enticed our souls toward

the abasement of humiliation but love for her.

  12. While I was saying of our life,

“How delightful it is!” I suddenly cried, “Alas!”
