1. By the life of Diya al-Din, I shall surely reveal

to him all that I used to conceal and reveal.

  2. You give others precedence over us, although we

are surely more deserving of precedence than they, and worthier.

  3. And you raise boys above us, as though they

were learned elders who had taken the foremost seats in the assembly.

  4. And you crush Arab souls among us,

whose valor will not endure humiliation.

  5. Did you take us for cattle at al-Dawlaʿiyya,

so you lead them to water wherever you wish, and drive them away?

  6. And had I turned to someone other than you, I would not have

such a standing with him when I appeared.

  7. Nor would he meet me with a scowling face,

returning my greeting quietly when I give it aloud.

  8. But my intense affection for you is my guide,

and I am not a man who turns away from his affection.

  9. And I have spoken; one with an ailing chest will surely spit.

So pardon me—may blame pass you by; a noble man forgives.

  10. Should this continue from you, I shall surely depart.

And how many like it have I left behind while it whistled!

  11. Easy now! What is all this arrogance?

Your present standing will leave you, and God is greater.
