1. The beloved visited and greeted me, and so revived me.

And since he shunned me, sleep has shunned my eyelids.

  2. How often I conceal my passion, while my eyelids proclaim it!

For tears from it are twin springs in each eye.

  3. Passion consumed me when a ring-necked dove lamented,

Calling to Hadil just before dawn among the branches.

  4. She lamented and so revealed her grief, though she knew no tears; nor

Did my tongue speak out, yet my tear revealed my plight.

  5. I would give my life for him who never saw my sickness and his own health

Without the sight making him laugh in conceit and making me weep.

  6. My heart sees him, though his dwelling is far away—oh,

How I grieve that the beloved, distant yet near, turns away!

  7. Who, then, has seen a bān bough upon a dune of fine sand

Before him, bearing apples of Lebanon?

  8. I have faded so utterly that, even if the dream-phantom visited me by night,

It would not see where I lay, if it came to me.

  9. O you who ask me about what has afflicted me,

I have perished entirely, yet my passion is undying.
