O absent one, since your departure no solace has come.
O absent one, after whom companionship is no more,
Nor have my eyes been free of sleeplessness at night.
Nor have my eyes in my nights ceased from wakefulness.
Parting from you made me weep blood out of longing
Your separation made me weep blood copiously,
for you, until I feared my sight would vanish.
For you, until I feared my sight would fail.
My day and my night are both dark:
My day and my night are both dark, both of them,
My day without a sun, and my night without a moon.
My day without sun and my night without moon.
And I, though Shiism is my creed,
And though lamentation be my sect and creed,
surely yearn for Umar more than any other of God's creatures.
Yet am I, of all God's creation, most ardent for life.
