1. Are these glances of your eye, or blades?

For with them you assail hearts.

  2. They reached my heart, yet there is no

way for me to reach union with you.

  3. And were those graces stirred

by the north wind's passing, or by wine?

  4. Those branches are my slayers—

through them, those roots slay me deliberately.

  5. From them I gained passion,

    yet gaining you eluded me.

  6. You are the one for love of whom

minds are fettered, barred from patience.

  7. You are the one who possesses beauty,

    yet has no beautiful deed.

  8. I have come to love one whose love

is my slayer, and I am the slain.

  9. No withering has touched the narcissus of his eyes

or the roses of his cheeks.

  10. Be fair to your lover before

he departs, for the hour of departure has come.

  11. Grant me union in this world, for

our stay in it is brief.

  12. My night and your hair are coal-black,

both of them thick and long.

  13. I am smitten with one with kohl-dark lids;

the dark-eyed gazelle fawn envies his gaze.

  14. For his saliva is clarified honey,

    and Salsabil, the sweet-flowing drink.

  15. I have no path to forgetting him,

even if he sears my liver.
