1. Ask at Salʿ about my heart: which way has it gone?

    And turn aside there; among its inhabitants you will see a marvel.

  2. There every maiden is like an oryx; whenever

    she gazes, she strikes lions before they spring.

  3. Fair as the sun—we said her radiance was the sunset glow—

    so she resembled silver suffused with gold.

  4. She settled in Najd, and longing settled in my liver.

    God bless Najd when it sends the east wind's breeze!

  5. Never did lightning flash before me from the direction of Kazimah

    without kindling a flame within my entrails.

  6. Nor did I recall Huzwa or al-Ghuwayr, nor

    the gazelles of Ramah, without crying, 'Oh, my woe!'

  7. I have come to love one concealed from sight,

    while his form has seldom been concealed from my mind.

  8. Nor do I hope for a dream-phantom of him to visit me by night;

    can one robbed of slumber ever see a dream-phantom?

  9. The beloved departed, and patience departed, following him.

    I cannot seek my patience once he has gone.

  10. If he grows distant, then al-Amjad, blessed in his fortune—

    his kindness has always remained close to me.

  11. God bless the son of Farrukhshah—what a king!

    He emulated his father and surpassed non-Arabs and Arabs.

  12. For he is the most generous giver, the most articulate of those

    who compose, and the most eloquent of those who dictate and write.

  13. Denial has never turned his petitioner away from him,

    and in battle he repels the clamorous host.

  14. If he is pleased, address him courteously, and you will gain his favor;

    but do not address him about anything when he is angry.

  15. Among all the sultans of this age there is none

    like al-Muʿizz's son, who honors merit and literature.

  16. Through his generosity, the science of alchemy has proved true to us,

    and we witness alchemy only when he gives.

  17. We offer him verses of poetry on paper,

    and so receive choice silver and gold.

  18. To you, O peerless one of the world, and most glorious of those

    in it, a sturdy she-camel sped with me, complaining of weariness.

  19. I have never ceased praising our lord and thanking him;

    indeed, prayer for him in our age has become a duty.

  20. Your promise's lightning-flashes gleamed before me, then passed away;

    so let the rain of fulfillment come pouring down from you.

  21. So I resembled a Najdi garden, thanks to a hand

    of glory; its soil was my skin—oh, what a wonder!

  22. May whoever is loyal to you never cease walking proudly in robes of honor,

    and may whoever opposes you perish, stripped of strength!
