1. Are you aware of my story?

    From you I bear a crippling, abiding affliction.

  2. From the glance’s languor, my passion grew sound;

    But through it my body is ailing.

  3. My tears became the admixture in my cup,

    Out of passion—and my regret is my drinking companion.

  4. How long will you delay paying my due, O wealthy one,

    Unjustly, while my passion is the creditor?

  5. Through passion, I lost the beauty of my patience;

    And the lover is rich in passion, yet destitute.

  6. I seek refuge in God from speech

    In which its devil is accursed.

  7. Love’s path within my heart

    Is straight amid the fire of love for him.

  8. I complain of what ails me to my beloved,

    But his heart is not merciful.

  9. Through my anguish, I have become as one snakebitten;

    The unharmed one did not pity my wailing.

  10. For the glance and his waist are like my body

    In frailty, and so too is the breeze.

  11. How many a lion has been assailed

    In Rāmah by a gazelle with its glances!
