Pass around, O friend, the cups of wine.
O bearer of cups, dispense the wine,
And take to recklessness, and turn away from decorum.
Cast off restraint, leave dignity behind,
And rise, seizing the opportunities of the nights.
Seize the nights, their moments so sublime,
And pass from the small to the large.
From youthful follies, to wisdom inclined.
For in the season of spring—and what a season!—
For in spring, what season can compare?
casting off the bridle delights the discerning.
When forbidden joys lose all shame and care.
For in that season, upon the moringa trees, sang the
The doves and nightingales and parrots sing,
doves, the bulbuls, and the turtledoves.
Making music for the banat on the wing.
So quench with the fire of your wine the fire of my sorrow,
With the fire of your being, set my cares aflame,
for light extinguishes every fire.
For light dispels the darkness just the same.
If we abstain from drinking wine
If we avoid the wine that leads astray,
that gladdens us by night or by day,
By night or day, we'll walk the better way.
then this life of ours has no delight,
For this life of ours cannot endure,
and our home, this world, is no home.
This world is not the final dwelling place.
