1. A vision of ‘Alwa that came by night freed me from captivity.

    It pained me as it turned away, then returned and gladdened me.

  2. A night adorned with Orion’s belt,

    and the two Dog Stars and Jawzahr.

  3. The sky’s crescent shines, and the bright stars

    delight the eyes, strung together and scattered.

  4. And the two Eagles raced for precedence, and already

    a lead had advanced one Eagle and held the other back.

  5. And the Daughters of the Bier show us women

    in mourning dress, unveiled in pairs and singly.

  6. And the Pleiades are like a maiden’s hand

    ringed with rubies, raw gold, and pearls.

  7. And darkness flees as the Zanj flee

    from the Romans when they fear the dawn.

  8. And we have striped robes from spring,

    laden with blossoms from the gardens’ brocade,

  9. displaying reds, yellows, and whites—

    pleasing to us—and blues and greens.

  10. And the languid breeze has awakened the bān trees,

    until they breathed forth musk and perfume.

  11. And the south wind sways the lavender’s flank

    between a rightward bend and a leftward.

  12. And we have aged wine, escorted as a bride

    to us from Ṣarkhad or Buṣrā.

  13. For she is a virgin; the ascetic devotee offers

    an excuse for drinking her when drunk.

  14. Before graceful maidens from Shayzar stand lions of the thicket,

    thrusting sidelong with spearheads.

  15. They unsheathed their white blades to defend fair-skinned women;

    they leveled their brown spears to protect brown-skinned women.

  16. Each slender-waisted beauty, with delectable dusky lips—

    her Hārūt-like gaze breathes magic.

  17. O my two friends, leave off mention of Egypt;

    I shall not love Egypt on this earth as long as I live.

  18. How could I love Egypt and leave behind in Jilliq

    Saṭrā, the two Nayrabs, and Muqrā?
