1. Though the dwelling has grown distant from you after being near,

    I still feel longing for you and remember you.

  2. Beloved ones, the hands of separation have played with us

    until we seem like gaming arrows, and they the gamblers.

  3. Since you departed, no doves remain in the ban trees, nor any leaves;

    nor do we have any desires left in our homelands.

  4. In those days, tale-bearers would ask about my condition,

    while I persisted in keeping secrets.

  5. You left my body prostrate before our meeting,

    and tears stay faithful while patient endurance betrays me.

  6. I have been denied every favor from you—alas!

    Even your image no longer visits me in sleep.

  7. I entrust to God a people whose dwelling is nowhere

    but in my heart, whether they stay or journey on.

  8. Clouds of tears from my eyelids pour over my cheeks; thus

    my body is drowned, while fire burns within me.

  9. If they go toward Najd, my eye's tears come to my aid,

    and the army of my longing plunges forth whenever they go down into the lowlands.

  10. O you who ignorantly reproach a lover for his passion,

    be gentle: even your little reproach is too much.

  11. You blame one enamored of the gazelle of Najd,

    though his chaste love gives him ample excuse.

  12. The slender-waisted one, with swaying shoulders and

    sweet lips, both benefits and harms me.

  13. I weep with longing whenever he looks at me, while he laughs at

    my gloom: he mocks me and enchants me.

  14. If our glances draw blood from his cheeks in playful luxury,

    why do his glances take vengeance on our innermost parts?

  15. Love rules unjustly; under its judgment,

    no neighbor or anyone else can secure protection.

  16. For this reason, Diya

    al-Din restrains himself from it: passion shames the wise.

  17. A judge: when two litigants disagree, he has

    arguments to advance and answers to give in support of right.

  18. His glory and noble deeds take pride in him, just as

    a Rudayni spear proudly sways.

  19. His generosity stirs him toward high deeds,

    as a sharp sword is brandished.

  20. With generosity he washes away hardship and lowers pri

    ces, while verses rise in value beside his eminence.

  21. He has established gatherings of generosity among the people, and he has

    many places of prostration filled with worshippers.

  22. He is eager to deny his own kindness, while the circum

    stances of those who seek his gifts attest to what he has bestowed.

  23. He follows an initial gift with another gracious gift, without

    reproach; his abundant bounty keeps flowing.

  24. Ask the residents of al-Zawra about him when he went

    as an envoy to the imam, chosen for the mission.

  25. He is the ambassador whose every message

    opens paths to success as he pursues it.

  26. He came to the caliph and the court, and

    he filled hearts, ears, and eyes with admiration.

  27. He was a learned man and a sea of knowledge in questioning and in an

    swering; his five fingertips were rivers.

  28. You are the noble descendants of al-Shahrazuri; you have

    renown carried in accounts, life stories, and reports.

  29. You are suns when dark events descend,

    and you are moons in the darkness of night.

  30. Through you, kings possess glory and splendor

    whose lights shine across the ages.

  31. Your pens, throughout the regions of the land,

    have trimmed the claws of fortune's reversals.

  32. Every just ruler has, through your ability,

    emigrants and supporters with whom he prevails.

  33. You are mountains of forbearance, firm and steady;

    you are seas of knowledge, full and surging.

  34. How excellent is Diya al-Din! He has

    a glory whose traces remain among those loyal to him.

  35. O Lord, protect him from what he fears,

    for neither one who hopes in him nor one sheltered by him is disappointed.
