1. O you who reproach me for the lovely one,

    You are no sincere adviser to me.

  2. You forbade me what is beautiful;

    You enjoined upon me what is ugly.

  3. Making your opinion seem fair, in my view,

    Is among the ugliest acts of disfigurement.

  4. I am smitten with a bān-tree branch upon a curved dune,

    Swaying beneath Yūḥ, the sun.

  5. Whenever he sways, he ensnares

    Hearts by setting them swaying.

  6. The white gazelle of palaces gazed through

    The eyes of a gazelle amid wormwood.

  7. Then is there one to flash upon me

    Some lightning from a lovely mouth?

  8. I was given, after the Muʿallā—the highest-winning arrow—

    In his love, the Manīḥ—the blank arrow—instead.

  9. So he deliberately grew stingy with union—

    He who had not been stingy.

  10. So every part of my body

    Bears wounds from his glance.

  11. O people, are there any healers

    For my wounded heart?
