1. Stone softens for me at what I suffer,

    Yet toward me you are harsh-hearted and cruel.

  2. Nor has my heart forgotten the memory of you,

    Yet you neglect the pledge, forgetful.

  3. Leave off reproaching me over the one who forgets my pledges,

    For those who reproach me over the forgetful one are not human.

  4. Unmixed wine reminds me of the dusky hue of his lips,

    So I mix my cup with my blood and tears.

  5. His two eyes shot me with the arrow of a glance,

    So Hippocrates cannot heal me of it.

  6. Passion for him has taken hold of my reins,

    Just as Inan led Abu Nuwas.

  7. I have refused humiliation, except in loving him;

    Upon my eyes and my head I bear it.
