rise while my lot with you declines.

  2. I set you straight, and you were fletched as arrows

that hit the mark, though before they missed.

  3. And if you refuse to be of help in this

world, then what help will you give at the Bridge?

  4. Indeed, one from whom no benefit is hoped

surely deserves the lash upon his nape.

  5. If you reject my glory, my merit, and my knowledge,

and my striving to help you, and my care,

  6. then, among pupils other than you, I have

become their Jacob among the tribes.

  7. They eagerly undertake my service,

so I eagerly work to benefit them.

  8. You folded up the carpet of your kindness to me

some time ago; where, then, is that carpet's unfurling?

  9. I ask of you neither raisins nor

molasses, nor what the drinking bowls are prepared for.

  10. As for me, what I have mentioned has already sickened my

soul; so give generously of vinegar or a mixed relish.
